May: Safety Commissioner Eugene "Bull" Connor uses fire hoses & police dogs on protestors in Birmingham, Alabama.
June: Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova becomes the first woman in space piloting Vostok 6 during a three day mission.
July: ZIP (Zone Improvement Plan) codes introduced into service by the United States Postal Service. There are now over 42,000 Codes.
August: Martin Luther King, Jr. delivers his "I Have A Dream" speech to over 250,000 people from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
September: The United States Senate ratifies the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty between the Soviet Union, United Kingdom & U.S.
October: Édith Piaf ('The Little Sparrow'), singer & one of France's greatest international stars dies of liver cancer aged 47.
November: President John F. Kennedy is assassinated & Texas Governor John B. Connally seriously wounded in Dallas, Texas.
December: The Boeing X-20 Dyna-Soar spaceplane program by the United States Air Force cancelled just after construction has begun.
