The story "Old Tom's Window" is an old tale but a good one. I first read it in a collection of Bennett Cerf essays, either "Try and Stop Me" or "Shake Well Before Using".

When I was a kid my folks owned a copy of "Try and Stop Me." The spooky stories in the "Trail of the Tingling Spine" chapter really creeped me out-- especially the one about people staying in a haunted house ending up crazy, tapping with a bloody hammer. Later, when I got into old comic books, I was amused to see many horror comic stories inspired by (i.e. ripped off from) those tales.
