How wonderful to see these. The Magnet was a big part of British School boy history. It ran from 1908 to 1940. The comic introduced us to the boys of Greyfriars School and in particular to the famous Billy Bunter. The Writer was Frank Richards which was the pen name of author Charles Hamilton. I grew up reading the Bunter books' which were mostly reprinted from the Magnet' and I spent many a happy hour in the company of Bunter, Harry Warton, Bob Cherry and their teacher Mr Quelch. The language was so "Jolly Hockey Sticks" and the adventures were so Jolly Good' I cant wait to read them again.

A wonderful beginning to the Greyfriars stories with detailed characterization of Harry Warton as he faces the somewhat harsh challenges of bullying and enforced conformity at his new boarding school. The style is slightly brutal compared to the mellow humor of the 1930's magnets with which I am more familiar but this is none the less a compelling read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I look forward to working my way gradually through these early publications.

As an American trying to understand the English school system, the more I study the more confused I become. I am especially puzzled by "The Remove." At the blog of an English linguist I found this description: "...Usually there was no fourth form, one went from 3rd to 5th. In popular boys stories of the time, (British equivalent of the Hardy Boys) the non-existent fourth form was referred to as "Remove", and seemed to the place where the kids who were not ready for the School Certificate exams were held over until they got to 16 years old and could leave school. Is this a fair explanation? The boys then are 14-15 years old?

You can't imagine what it means to have access to old comics and magazines like these, I'm addicted to the old illustrations and your uploads are such good quality they never let us down. THANKS not only for this comic but for the effort that goes into every piece on the site, thanks.

I am pleasantly surprised to see every issue of the 'Magnet' available here. I have always been a devotee of Charles Hamilton's work and so I can immerse myself in the wonderful world of Greyfriars School at my leisure.
