Excellent comic - Artist info on card on back page.
But no credit for A little child shall lead them' - which is a marvellous story |

The sound effects in these stories are so over-the-top they verge on parody. I'm sure they were inspired by Harvey Kurtzman's EC war comics (as were the stories) but things like "SCHWINNGG!" "VALLLHOOOOM" and "BRHAMMPF!" sound more like Mad Magazine than Frontline Combat. It strikes me odd in that context that the mayhem is relatively restrained for a pre-Code war comic. There are no flying body parts, bayonets enter bloodlessly and there are few huge muzzle flashes from the soldiers' weapons.
By the way, I was happy to see one of my old favorite sound effects, "BARROOM!!" I always wanted to use that one over a picture of an exploding tavern. |
