JUNGLE JO #1-3 all seem pretty watered-down and bland compared to the Iger Studios' Good Girl Art of only a year or two earlier on display in JO-JO CONGO KING. Even Tangi (previously a backup feature in DAGAR Desert Hawk) got a makeover for the first two issues, and it wasn't an improvement on the older model. I wonder if Fox had a financial crisis and had to let all his better artists go and hire neophytes, and/or if he was already reacting to the parent/teacher critics (not sure if Wertham had published anything at this point) already, trying to tone down his former excesses of sex and violence. The product just seems reduced and kind of sad and lackluster, now. It was only about a 2-year run for ZOOT/RULAH, JO-JO and ALL TOP Comics -- an outlandish little oasis of a highly specialized comics subgenre of somewhat outre' fantasy-adventure stories.

There was actually a code formed by a group of comic publishers called the ACMP, back in 1947, but similar to what movies had gone through about 15 years earlier, it was a code no one was really following, in spite of companies like Fox putting an “Adults Only” warning on their 1948 series Murder Incorporated. I get the feeling that many more people would have been satisfied with that sort of warning/rating system early on as opposed to censorship, but oh well, I suppose enough wasn’t being done.
