When Brad is offered a promotion back to their hometown, Betsy convinces him to turn it down, and he’s fired as a result. Betsy fears Brad will return to Joyce, but he says he never loved her. Betsy also arranges for Brad to get his job back.

They fall in love, but Rita decides to steal him away. When Miles doesn’t succumb, Rita threatens to commit suicide. She survives and apologizes for her actions.
