Can a kind Englishman please explain the riddle "When is a dentist like an umpire/When he pulls out the stumps"? I understand the dentist end of it but American umpires don't pull out stumps (???). Thanks.

It's about cricket! Stumps are three bits of wood (short poles) that are put in the ground in a line next to each other. Two short pieces of wood rest on the top of them (called the bails) ... when made the whole thing is called a wicket At "close of play" the umpires (there are 2) remove the stumps. Breaks during the day only the bails are removed. BTW some games are scheduled for 5 days and if not completed are considered a draw. 5 days and no result :)
