From Random 12, I went for Lopez Blanco’s Phantom-like Spirit of the Jungle – 90 episodes produced in 1962. Spirit, descended from Prester John, seemingly lives forever and leaves a mark on his enemies’ brow - but uses the tip of a whip rather than a skull ring. Excellent pencils, Lopez-Blanco sure knows how to compose a frame, capture action, draw women (Mary is a stunner) and horses.
We drop into the action partway through a story where an evil usurper has taken over the town and Spirit penetrates the streets in flames to capture the bad guy and to rescue the love of his life – but will he succeed?
