Looks interesting, but 2 pages per scan make everything so small!

Beautiful artwork, articulate plotting and dialogue - and educational. I never knew about the use of cormorants for fishing.
Terrific adventure story from Jane Preston with the secret papers as the McGuffin that carries the plot forward. Hitchcock could have made a great movie of this - with those vast open vistas of western China - and it has a blonde in it too. He would have loved it.
Jane Preston appears to have written many titles for Schoolgirls Picture Library. I don't know if she was a real person or just a house name - I would like to know more.

Googling around, I found that Jane Preston was a pseudonym of Reginald G. Thomas. He also wrote as Judy Thomas. During the 1930s he wrote boys' adventures under his own name, mostly for The Ranger and Chums. In the early 50s, using the female names, he wrote long text stories for Girls' Crystal and School Friend. I presume these stories were adapted for SPL, but I haven't found confirmation.
Biographical note:
Thomas, Reginald G(eorge) (1899-1956)
Born in Worcester; educated at University College, Wales; a journalist.
