Joe Kubert’s fluid layout and Jon Small’s atmospheric art help make this western comic stand out from the rest.

One thing that stands out in these stories, is the consistent use of black for shading and atmosphere. Toth had the best reputation for it, but many Golden Age artists used it. It seems to me that many current mainstream artists, in contrast, rarely use black shading at all. Am I wrong?Maybe because of the much improved colour palate available?
