I have always been fascinated by comic formats, different sizes, shapes, content and over the last few years have been researching Dutch comics.  While many Dutch comics were text strips in landscape format (format italien or Australian, for that matter) and include such quality stuff as Eric de Noorman and Kapitein Rob, Netherlands also had beeldromans - 4 1/4 inch x 3 inch, 1 panel to a page, balloon strips.  As they intrigue me and I've managed to add various issues of Dick Bos and some others to my collection, I thought some of you might be interested in seeing what they look like.  I should have posted this ages ago but I'm a bit slow. Well, narfstar, as I'm still awaiting clarification on the Masterman comic from my pal, who insists he is getting somewhere with it, I'm probably the least reliable person to ask.  That said, I have an original Kat comic - #8 (and an original Pimpernel, #4 plus a couple of Pimpernel facsimiles as well as Dick Bos.  The originals can be a bit fragile)  Problem is that De Kat reappeared in a magazine sized adventure a few years ago - new story and art, and very adult.  So the original stories could be pd but not the character.  Dick Bos, for example has been reprinted in recent years and is not pd, as far as I know.  As with many old, really obscure British comics, most people in Netherlands, incl. collectors and comic shop owners, do not really remember this stuff.  But copyright law is such that it only takes one person and you're in soapy bubble.

Most of these comics won't come in PD for a long, long time.
It's not only the reprinting of some comics, but they will also only be PD 70 years after the passing away of the author/copyright holder.
The problem for most of these kind of comics is that not the creator but the newspapers, where they first appeared, have the copyrights (a lot of those newspapers still exist).
If a paper merges with another one, the new 'combination' gets the copyrights.

 It's a moot point anyway as there have been films and recent reprints.  In the case of Kapitein Rob there has been a recent film (and most enjoyable it is too). Again a moot point as most of this type of strip appeared in newspapers first.  e.g. Rikki Visser, Aram, Piloot Storm etc.

All further.enlightenment gratefully received particularly if you have info. on other beeldroman characters such as De Moker, De Tweede Pimpernel, Lex Brand.  There are internet pages about the comics but nothing on their publishing history.

I've spoken several "walking libraries" about these comics now............ none of them could tell me/did know if the comics mentioned are PD.
The less I know, the more I want to find out

A question for the (Dutch) members.
Does anyone of you know if the (weekly/monthly) comics from the Classic Series, in the Dutch language, are Public Domain?
A lot of the ones I've found recently were issued in the 60s.
I would share the copies I have in case they're public domain.

Weet een van jullie of er nog auteursrechten zitten op de strips van de Classic series, voornamelijk uit de jaren '60?
Ik heb een plek gevonden waar veel oude afleveringen te vinden zijn.
Als er geen rechten meer op zitten kan ik kijken of het mogelijk is om ze hier te delen.

Does anyone know if these are PD.?

Weet een van jullie of de auteursrechten van de "Sjors" uit 1939 misschien al verlopen zijn?
Daar heb ik ook een aantal van voor de geļnteresseerden.

Don't know if they're p.d. or not but I'd love to have a look at your copies, please.

I have found them using binaries.
If you're custom to use that, you'll find them and a couple of thousand other (not p.d.) Dutch comics as well.
In case you're not using binaries for downloading "stuff" I'll try to send you a few (the ones that are less then 25 mb) by email.
