Title: Good morning from LA
Post by: Whiteash on April 15, 2017, 04:44:44 PM
What a fantastic site.  I love your collection of old radio programs.  I grew up on cassette tapes of the Shadow sponsored by "Blue Coal." (and yes, cassettes does date me as a child of the early 80's).

I'm a writer and an amateur artist.  I've dabbed in webcomics in the past with Eisner homage "Vincegermain."

So glad to meet you all.

I can remember listening to them on 8 track tapes, LPs and reel to reel tapes back in the 60s and 70s.  In addition there always seemed to be one local station or another running OTR.
I even got to listen to some stuff first run.  CBS started running the CBS Radio Mystery Theater in the mid 70s and that was all new stuff that ran for several years.  Beyond that there were some limited series here and there.  I particularly remember some adaptations of Marvel Comics characters (70s?) and a Doc Savage series run on NPR in the 1980s.  Some of the BBC series also occasionally got run over here in the states.

We had an 8 track player in our house in the '70s. So I'd go to Jack Cullen's record store in the Brentwood Shopping Mall and I'd buy 8 tracks of The Shadow and Superman.

Jack Cullen actually had his own booth at the back of the store where you could see him recording his radio program--the Owl Prowl. You could hear this late at night and on the program, after playing big band music, he'd play many of the classic radio programs from his vast archive.

I got a do it yourself crystal radio for one birthday, so I'd lay in my bed and dial up Jack Cullen. Cullen had been around for some years by then, so he knew people like Frank Sinatra and Jack Benny, who he'd meet and interview whenever they came to town.

The 8 tracks didn't hold up well. By the '80s, when I'd try to play them there was lots of ghosting as the sound from one track had transferred over to another track. And most of the tapes fell apart as the bit of silver tape that spliced the tapes together fell off (sometimes when the cartridge was still in the player).

I still have an 8 track player (not the same one, but another one I got for free from a friend when she moved); however, I don't have any tapes in usable condition.

What a nice offer.  Where is your Dell Revival site? I couldn't find it on Facebook.  I don't know if I'm quite up to par in terms of what you need.  This is my style -- http://www.vincegermain.com (http://www.vincegermain.com)  I'm actually writing a comic right now that I've hired a couple of artist for.  Always good to know your limits.

Wow, I'd love to hear some of those 70's Marvel shows.  Do you think they're online?

This past year I actually ran across some episodes of the Fantastic Four that had been posted online including at the Internet Archive (where CB+ sources many of its OTR).

I had forgotten that Bill Murray played Johnny Storm/The Human Torch on these (not long before he joined SNL).
