Your intro thread looked lonely, so I thought I'd post :D
Weeeell, I've known for a while about this place. But with the server upgrade happening at ZCult, I thought now is as good a time as any to come have a look.
I like the look of the forum Serj. There are lots more buttons for us to play with here too (though I think the Cult has better smileys ;D)

I stumbled upon this site quite by accident.
I'm a teacher in Fort Wayne, IN. I'm currently writing curricula using comics to promote literacy. I've been around a bit; owned some comic shops back in the '80's; spent some time employed at Marvel (Direct Sales Dept.) in the early '90's.
Although he doesn't know me, Trangopif is my personal hero.

I'm a teacher myself. I've managed to use comics with some of my kids; sadly, I've had little success with my problem readers - of course, I'm teaching seniors, so maybe it's that old "comics are for kids" problem. I don't think so, though. Their generation just doesn't seem to love the medium. Sad, really.

Well, I believe you told me about it, Serj... can't remember where we crossed paths, but I definitely remeber hearing about this place first in a message on one site or another (not sure if it was directed at me, though, might've been a comment in a torrent)... A real great site, which take a lot of work , i am glad to found it as it real fat, and will be a good complemantary for my project
In fact i start using some stuff from this site and place it on my site to be read on line for Free.
As i done with other sites , One issue from each magzine will be available to be read online with a link ( active for senior members only ) to the source to download the other issues.
Presently links on readpapyrus can lead you to more than 6000 comics to download. and there is more to come.
I have also many golden age comics which i will try to post them here to be available to all of you to download it. as soon as I find out how?

i've known about the site for some time, but busy with work and haven't been able to surf on by much...dl'd some black hood comics last time...had some time today and came to the site and saw that a forum was up...also one of the ops/mods who's also a mod on zcult told me about the forum and came to check it out today...
was cool to find some airfighters and airboy comics here...loved the eclipse 80's version of airboy...looking to check out david nelson, father of davey, and of course The Heap :-)

I found you while searching for information on Ace publishers. I'm a noob, but I like the older stuff and the the concept of preserving and sharing public domain material is a worthy one. I got in to older comics through the EC reprints and from there I got hooked.
I haven't had a chance to poke around the site and If I should ask this on another thread, let me know, but what's the best way of determining if something is public domain?

I was informed about this forum on the Zoot Radio OTR message board. I am a big fan of everything from the 40s and I love golden age comics. My favorites are Superman, Batman, Sgt. Rock's Easy Company and Blackhawk.
My real name is Forester, but my user name comes from my favorite comic series, G.I. Joe, a Marvel comic from the 80s based on the toyline. Yo Joe!

I found this place through the ZCult site, which i've used maybe half a dozen times. I was looking for Captain Marvel/Marvel Family stuff and somehow found that place.

I am a long time fan of comics, being 60 yrs old and from the UK, I learned to read with Dandy and Beano and then came to Canada and continued my love affair with comics.
My main interest is with Golden Age comics, not much of a fan of Super Heroes, but I like Westerns, Crime, and General Family type comics.
I have many comics , but have yet to research which are Public Domain.
Hope I can contribute something to the forum. :D

How found? I stumbled upon this site while searching for subjects relating to vintage comics. I'm not a collector, but occasionally need a dose of a good comic. I generally don't care for contemporary issues, but the local place's prices for the older material that I enjoy can be a little more than my fixed budget can bear. (sigh - but peacefully)

I stumbled onto WOWIO, a U.S. only site that offers free .pdf files of books and comics, last month. I saw recently that it had made a copy of Green Lama 4 available, which reminded me that I'd not conducted a search for Green Lama, which I have been using as a term to try to find golden age public domain comics online, in the last couple of months. My search led me to http://flashbackuniverse.blogspot.com/, which in it's post of Monday, Jan. 14, 2008 mentions the site and includes the url, http://goldenagecomics.co.uk/. I then went downstairs for supper, which if I recall was....

In my case, I did a search through Google and found this site. And I'm glad I did because getting the chance to read vintage comics that are practically off limits to me - because of the relative expense of the actual books and their rarity - is nothing to sneeze at. I'm very much enjoying the Quality and Fawcett books on the site.

I rather desperately needed to know the exact wording of some missing lettering on a page of original art passing through my hands at work. I couldn't wait for someone to round up a copy of the comic and in "googling" (probably for the comic book title plus the words scans or the word index) found you guys.
You had it and have saved the day (I will get the credit).
I had to get a copy of CDisplay to see it, as I am new to these download-oriented formats. I bet I downloaded the file three times before deciding the file was good but I needed other software (a couple of other items I downloaded to test were opened by WinZip just fine).

You do not need CDisplay. I don't believe there are any proprietary file formats for that program. .CBR and .CBZ files are just renames .RAR and .ZIP files and you can decode them with WinRAR or WinZIP or related programs. WinRAR does both. I assume WinZIP does as well.

Many require you to rename from cbr to rar and from cbz to zip for the achiver to work. Cdisplay requires the opposite.

I had been listening to a podcast (The Golden Age of Comic Books) and decided to google "golden age comics downloads" and this was at the top of the list.
This is a fantastic reference to the early work of numerous artists and writers and I wait each night for my bandwidth to be renewed so that I can pour over the books.

With the misconception cover art was the best I could get, I Googled This Magazine Is Haunted and got the whole kit and kaboodle here. The site is an invaluable resource.

Was roaming around doing a search for comic forums since I'd been wanting to plug into one for a while but hadn't found any that rang the bell.
Then this site showed itself and with the downloads available I figure there must be some interesting folk on here seeing they have been willing to divest so much of their time.
Came into comics at around age 10 buying Superboy's and thus the memorible Adventure #345 seeing DC was smart enough to keep there main vein out there in the public's eye so I was hooked on the Legion of SH.
Still have that issue seeing somehow it managed to survive the summer campouts.
Bounced in and out of comics over the years 'til came full circle in the middle 80s, got bit with the bug, went to my first convention and haven't been the same since.
That first convention I vaguely recall walking around in a daze by those many dealer's tables displaying all these ancient comics I'd never seen before.
Glad I had managed to keep a goodly number of my comics from a youth having only had only one sell off to kick myself over.
Oldest comic is a Katz and Jammer Kids platinum age collection from newspaper reprints. Newest good read I found was the Concrete series by Paul Chadwick from the '80s.
Just dug out my old TTAs and started rereading the Antman/Wasp stories. What a hoot.

At the risk of appearing ignorant I have to admit I don't know how to access the scans and pics you mentioned. Not being too puter literate I need simplicity but am still learning my way around this site.
Is there a how-to section someplace on the forum with an explanation of the process necessary to download and provide downloads?

I have a couple of coverless alex shomburg comics (green hornet) and was looking to identify covers by the "story about the cover" section. I also hae a cover-only pf daring comics #9, and was looking for the content.
i'm a collector, writer-artist, and law professor, so i'm interested in intellectual property aspects (rich public domain) as well as aesthetic ones.
i'm interested in seeing jingle jangle, george carlson work, and some of the wolverton-hanks type stuff. but really i have eclectic interests, and my budget doesn't always allow me to indulge them all, so thanks for this service.
frankly, i picked "sluggo" because i thought "tubby" would be taken.

I got here in sideways fashion. I work at a public library, and one of my duties is to order movies on DVD, so I regularly read DVD reviews online. You were linked in passing by Glenn Erickson, the DVD Savant, just as a cool site someone had shown him. Serendipity is a wonderful thing. ;D

I always heard my mom talk about the box of old comics my grandmother threw away, and the weird horror comics like The Crypt, and others I never got to see, so today I just thought of Googling PUBLIC DOMAIN COMICS and pickeed this site from the listings. I just wanted to see the difference in old time art done by a human hand rather than computer rendered.
I found the site, registered about 2 hours ago, and tried to download a copy of BAFFLING MYSTERIES, but I got a message "Error: Sorry but you are not allowed to download this file as you have exceeded the number of files you are allowed to download during this period. Please check your user control panel for more information on the limits currently available to you.. If you believe this to be in error, please quote the above error and report this to the admin"
I thought it was a fluke, so I tried another and got the same message.
The COVERS look good on the main page, but would like to see a whole copy.
Anybody know of where the "admin" button or contact info is so I can see if they can fix me up so I can download something?

I used to use z-cult a lot but when I stopped by recently I was sad to see that all of the marvel and dc material had been removed. I noticed the links to here and thought I might have a look at some of the titles from the golden age that I have heard so much about. In particular I thought I'd see if you had any of the original iteration of The Spirit.

Thanks for the welcome narfstar. Sorry, I bring no gifts - only found many, many here. A neighbour passed on a HUGE box of 50's & 60's comics, similar to titles here to my bruv and self. They got junked (arghh!) after we left home. Who says you don't get 2nd chances? Am in happyland just looking at the covers.

I'm working on a couple of drawings and wanted to look at old styles of comic so did a google search for 1940 comics..found this site which looks brilliant.. only question is.. how do I get to a page to download a comic?? (yeah allright, I know I can hear a chuckle, but I don't normally subscribe to forums...)

I found this site through a link on either Wikipedia or any number of sites about Golden Age characters. I was bouncing around the 'net a lot that day so I'm not sure which exactly it was .... probably Wikipedia though. I'm not one to use Google for anything (Dogpile is better).

Yes, they say that the first step towards healing is to admit to the problem - and, boy, do I have a problem.
I stumbled upon this site when I was trying to find a complete view of the signature that's trimmed off at the bottom of my copy of Croydon's (often misspelled Croyden) Variety Comics #1. Sadly, the scanned copy on the site is chipped at the bottom and was of no help.
I love researching golden age comics. I do a lot of artist identification with my buddy of 37 years, Hames Ware. We're currently working with Henry Steele to update his original Fiction House check list for the GCD and Hames and I are concurrently going over comics from 1940-1946 that were produced by the Jacquet Shop (with some Bernard Baily Studio titles tossed in for good measure).
I also publish a magazine called The Vadeboncoeur Collection of ImageS which reprints art from the "original" Golden Age (1880-1920) in color (plus occasional B&W specials)

Glad to have you, I'm sure we'll come up with plenty of questions as time goes on.
And, since you claim to have tons of books but _almost_ no time for scans, I figure I'll ask about one specific category just in case you have the books and the time for one page from them: The Fox books where we have the IW/ Super reprints but are missing the first story page since it's on the inside front cover; I know we have at least Blue Beetle 46 and Phantom Lady 14, 15, and 23 in that category.

Hi y'all,
I am Paul Karasik, cartoonist and editor of the Eisner Award winning "I Shall Destroy All The Civilized Planets: The Comics of Fletcher Hanks". I am now working on a second volume of this surprisingly popular anthology which, when combined with Volume I, will comprise, "The Complete Fletcher Hanks".
However, I need some help.
I am now down to missing a final three Hanks stories. These stories are:
Fantomah from Jungle Comics #5
Fantomah from Jungle #11
Whirlwind Carter from Daring Mystery #5
These Fletcher Hanks books could only be made possible through the help of collectors such as yourselves: collectors willing to share high-res scans of their valuable comics.

Hi, I've always been interested in comics and all its variations so probably like most people, I used a search engine typing in "newspaper cartoon strips" and hey presto, here I am.
I am especially interested in newspaper cartoon strips. Being in the UK I was brought up with The Perishers, Andy Cap, The Gambols and Garth, all of these were in The Daily Mirror I think.
But I also like the American cartoon strips of Blondie, Krazy Kat although I was born after they were popular, so I think that they must have appeared in a British newspaper. There was also a character called Pop, I think, who was a portly bald gentleman. This particular strip was very simply drawn but very effective and had few words.

Glad I found this site( thanks to a link from one of my yahoo groups ). I've finally some time to go exploring. May-be some uploading in the future( but no promises, as yet ). I'm not really computer literate but did manage to down-load the CDisplay programme. It works just fine( once I figured it out-hey, I'm 1/2 caveman ). I may even have time to do some editing( on some scans ). In the mean-while hoping it stays up for a long while( yes, I read the bulletin AND the FAQ's-it's the first thing I research ).

It still won't let me log onto the download page, but when using the link provided in Yoc's newbie FAQ, it let me download (as a Guest User). I just downloaded three comics and can't wait to try them out on my 505.

On Yahoo. I'm a fan of superhero stuff, the more obscure the better, and have been for most of my life.
I searched for something on Yahoo and eventually found this site and I'm chuffed. All these great comics to read. I'm impressed with the talk of collecting books that aren't in the best nick, as that's what I've always done. You don't spend a fortune and you get the same stories as in a n.m. copy. I'm in Scotland - not many comic shops left here now.

I do have a few GA comics. I have a Blue Bolt vol1 #9 which was the last Simon and Kirby issue, unfortunately I can't read it as it would turn to dust.
I run a group called INTER-FAN PRODUCTIONS INK, an art group that started in the 70's. I also use the site for Fandom History and Fanzine info.

I put each page into a clear "sheet protector" (I buy the Arvey light-weight ones at Office Max) and then put them all into a cheap three-ring folder with a cover sleeve to hold a color scan of the cover. Voila! A comic that I can read and enjoy without chips covering my lap every time.

Thanks for the tip Jim, but at this point if I even look at it It would become dust. But knowing I have it is enough, I got it at a swapmeet in the early 70's. I actually had a 2nd one but had to sell as I need the cash.
Anyone here collect fanzines? Am looking for a copy of (I think) the Golden Age Collector, which had a strip by John Adkins Richardson called "Little Mnemo in Slumberland. He was the son of Little Nemo only his slumberland was populated by superheroes (obscure ones) and fought the Claw. Even Captain Marvel was in it as Shazam hadn't come out yet.

I came the long LONG way around through serendipity!
I downloaded a demo for a game on Nintendo DS and liked it so much I looked it up online, stumbled across people posting replies about other DS programs and followed one to something about being able to convert files to watch movies on your DS, and someone there mentioned they used a comic reader program to read old comic scans on their DS and linked to this site!
I grew up reading my fathers 1940s-1950s comic books so this is like a reunion with friends for me! It might sound strange but reading the scanned pages triggers memories of how they smelled when I read them the first time around, that golden mellow aged paper seems almost real as I read here. Thank you for letting me enjoy this again! ;D

Sadly, moving around between wildly different climates really deteriorated his collection, which wasn't protected in any way other than being stored in cardboard apple boxes. The last time I actually got to see and handle his collection was in the early 90s and it was difficult to hold or turn pages without an alarming amount of crumbling so it may not exist in a usable/readable form anymore. :'( If we get a chance to visit them this year I'll definitely peek up in the attic and see if it looks like there's any hope though!

Which means all the more reason to scan. These books need preserving. We got some editors here could can do amazing things. I have a couple of Amazing Man comics that fortunately had big borders because they have crumbled away but I got the stories scanned. If you need help there are those here willing to help scan them in for posterity. We can not post Marvel, DC, or Street and Smith and a few others but we could scan them for archive purposes so that they do not disappear forever.

My GUESS is that you'll never find anything about Jon Mayes, DL. That cover has always looked to me like it was done by someone who probably worked for the printing company and copied/traced the characters because they needed a cover for the newfangled product. My best suggestion is to try the Social Security Death Index - though who knows how many Jon Mayes you're likely to find. All we can ever know for "certain" is that he was in NYC in 1934. Maybe he stayed there.

Strange, I was thinking along the same lines... that maybe it was done either by an illustrator brought in from an outside advertising agency or someone within the company who had some sort of art background, but wasn't a noted cartoonist. Although the characters might be traced I think the cover layout is well thought out with the elements purposefully placed, so whoever Jon Mayes was I think he did have some sense of design. Thanks for the suggestion, I hadn't thought of using the death index... I'll let you know if I ever find anything. :)

While the cover design obviously has stood the test of time, the line work is fairly rudimentary and that's what makes me suggest that JM wasn't a professional artist. I hope you can find SOMETHING.

Well...where to start.
I've been reading comics for 15 years now (I'm really not that old) and a few years ago I feel in love with the Marvel Family. Well, wanting to discuss these wonderful characters I made the mistake of going to the DC boards (although they are much better now, back then they were horrible). From there I heard about a Captain Marvel forum at bluetights.net, which was a Superman site. On that board somebody had a link here and well...the rest is history.
But I love this site, there is no way I could read any of these great stories otherwise (especially the Captain Marvel Jr and Mary Marvel material) as DC seems to not care about reprinting the excellent stories they have staring these characters.
But I hope after I get my Marvel Family fix (that's a lot of comics to download and read) I can get other Fawcett stuff (I really enjoy Mr. Scarlet and Pinky, I've just gotten to the stories where they are unemployed and I'm loving it) and from there other great GA stuff.

and I think Hames and I are going to continue our Great Unknowns series for Alter Ego. When we do, our first (or second) installment is going to be on Emil Gershwin, who was the other great CMJ artist. The other one we're determined to do is Munson Paddock.

I suspect that he means 'The Eagle' a weekly boys paper first published in Great Britain in 1950 which was Luck of the Legions stamping ground.
U.S. Viewers might better remember this comic as being the launching pad for Colonel Dan Dare.

Sad to say but I believe the Eagle is subject to BRITISH copyright rules which are much more unforgiving then the U.S.A. some thing like Seventy years after the death of ALL the creators so we could still be in for a very long wait indeed !!
FYI the first three years worth of this comic, some 156 issues HAVE already been scanned but the person ( or persons) behind the project got the hump and pulled the plug after seeing their hard work showing up in CD form on Ebay. >:(

Slight Correction - Jane The Magician from Mars appeared in Amazing Man Comics 7-11. All of her appearances can be found online at http://gotomars.free.fr/magician.html saving people the trouble of downloading the AMC files if Jane is all they're interested in.

I have my own two dogs but welcome to the site mytwodogs. Everything here is old but a lot of fun. Look around download what you like and maybe you will have something we are missing that you may be able to contribute. Louis hopefully you will find some other things here to enjoy since Eagle is not public domain we can not house it here. Lots of other great stuff though.

I typed in Download Golden Age Comics on google in my mad search for Skyman material while researching the character for my Bounty Hunter series.
Glad I found this place. In addition to Skyman, I've been enjoying the Black Terror stuff, and Daredevil, not to mention a few others.
Wish I could pay you guys back by scanning my copy of Skyman #2 like I said I would ages ago, but somebody stole my scanner a while back(which you may recall, I had packed in the shed in preparation for a move) so I haven't been able to do it.
Any trustworthy Canadians on the site who want to do it for me? Of course, I want the book back when you're done. :)

I read an article on Pre-Code horror called "The Other Guys" by Lawrence Watt-Evans, and I typed some of the titles mentioned in a search engine. That led me to this site. I could get lost in here for days if I am not careful ;) I love all kinds of comic artists from Winsor McKay to Alex Raymond to Wally Wood to Kirby to Ditko and Carl Barks. I lost interest in new comics ten years ago. I can't get enough of the older ones.

I'm not sure how I found the site originally. I think it was around the time that Wildstorm/ABC was publishing the "Terra Obscura" mini-series, co-plotted by Alan Moore. They used a number of public domain characters, primarily the heroes of Nedor/Standard/Better. I was probably surfing for more info on the characters, particularly the Grim Reaper, when I likely found it.
Now, the Dynamite Entertainments "Project Superpowers" series have tweaked my interest again, even though the idea has been better than the execution on that series.
I've skimmed over the technical section on scanning and cleaning up the scans - you guys do a lot of work to gets these comics up! Thanks a lot.
Alas, I have no Golden Age comics to scan or upload.

I lost hundreds of old comics to a storm damaged storage shed, salvaged a few but none of my real oldies escaped.

ed, you won't find DC here except for ones they took from other companies like Plastic Man. There are a wide variety of books here from the generic super hero books to sci-fi, horror, western, and even romance. I was a writer on "Studly Love Muffin Romance". My wife read a story I did about the one legged rodeo clown named "Hoppy". He was gored 47 times 3 minutes into his first day on the job and fell in love with his nurse, a tall lanky lass with webbed feet named Telulah.
If you believe that, I have a case of Kooba Kola to sell you!

Funny story... I was checking out the Wii Home brew page. Wii Home Brew is an application through which you can play free home made Wii games. Some one there made a Comic book reader. and referenced this site as his site for Comics that he used to test his program. I have pretty much downloaded every comic book on the Internet Archive site, most of them being Western themed titles. I came here hoping to find mystery and horror titles.

You could ask someone here if a certain book is ok, but don't be surprised if they don't know for sure. It's best to do the research yourself, starting with this site which member PeterC found: http://librarycopyright.net/digitalslider/. It shows what conditions are needed before something could be considered Public Domain.
The next place you'ld want to go is here: http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/cce/. At that site you will find the renewals filed between 1950 & 1977 for works published between 1922 through 1950, which is the bulk of Golden Age material. For renewals on works filed from 1978 onward, go here: http://www.copyright.gov/records/.

Hi. I have always had an interest in old comics. I was given some comics by my mother during an illness as a child. The local newsagent used to have a stack of Marvel and DC comics every month. Some of these comics contained Weird Tales and horror comics. I did not save these as a child and always wondered where they had gone. I just typed "comics" into google and came upon your website. I was overjoyed to see that you could download and read all types of comics. I have now developed a renewed interest in comics and enjoy reading the histories of these publishers. Thank you to everyone involved in bringing these comics to the public domain. :)

In general, I have been more of a Silver Age comic fan, but I'm expanding my horizons and have found some great
heroines of the Golden Age.

My name is Paul and my alias is "Paulpicks1" -- I also have been known to go by "Paulpicks2" whenever I'm given grief about my username I try the other one. I have loved comics for decades and decades, I hesitate to say how many. :P I'm particularly a fan of "good girl art" so it should be no suprise that Bill Black is my hero -- he founded Americomics (aka AC) in the late 70's and has published hundreds of "gga" comic books. ;D Even so, my favorite comic books are superheroine stories from the golden age of comics -- the 40's. I love early Wonder Woman books, Sheena, Mary Marvel, Miss Masque, Woman in Red, Blonde Phantom, etc. 8) I AM PARTICULARLY INTERESTED IN POSTING THIS REPLY TODAY BECAUSE I AM HAVING TROUBLE DOWNLOADING FROM THIS FANTASTIC SITE. When I try to "log in" I'm shunted to an error page that says I have not entered a user name, which is simply wrong. I always enter "paulpicks1" and beneath it under "password" I enter my password. I made a donation of $20.00 yesterday hoping that would unlock the "error" page but it hasn't. If anybody in administration reads this, please offer me a suggestion or two. I love your site, I love comic books, and all I want to do is enjoy all the "good stuff" you have.

Please let me know if you do not receive this donation tomorrow -- it was for $20.00 in U.S. currency. And thanks for informing me I'm not going crazy, that I did in fact do all I was supposed to do, and that the "error" is in the "Server's mechanism" and not in the "usersname".

Up to then, I thought it was just me, or some glitch in the system that affected only me. Now I get it -- we're all in the same boat together, and we've all got the same problem. That is very comforting, believe me, it is.

There is a good reason you have not been able to download. When joining your download limits of 1gig or 200 files a month has to be set up by a mod. You both now are. BTW marky I am a high shool algebra teacher. And playa if you like Space Family Robinson you may want to get Cover C of the Captain Action Special which has a Dan Spiegle cover. I have mine ;D

I'm a university student in the U.S. working on a research project in text-to-scene generation. We decided to use comics for some of our training data as actions are simplified, and objects are obvious. We also wanted to use obscure comics so as not to influence the human annotations through familiarity. A quick Google search for "old comics" brought up this site :).

Hey guys. I found the site when I was looking for info on a comic I found in a book titled The Weirdest Comics in the World (or something like that:-)). I found the site by doing a Web search for certain Golden Age MLJ comics that I needed to read for an article I wrote several months ago. I've enjoyed being able to read the various Golden Age comics as part of my research. However, there are times--quite a few recently--when I have been unable to download the comics. I get this message:
Error: Your session ID does not match the session ID for this download link. If you are following this link from our site, please report it to the admin.. If you believe this to be in error, please quote the above error and report this to the admin.
At other times I get messages that say I have used up my allotted bandwidth (or allotted amount of something if not bandwidth).
Is this problem in downloading comics normal or is there something I'm doing wrong that is causing this problem?

I googled comic strips and this site came up. hopefully i can view the contents of old hot rod comic that i only have been able to see the covers to date.
You will enjoy the discovery that this site does NOT believe that comic books are comprised only of covers. Check out Charlton and Hillman for at least two companies with hot rod comic titles.

The version of CDisplay (I think it was 1.eight) that I downloaded, has opened both cbz and cbr files for me, so try that one.

The real limit is ONLY ONE AT A TIME !!!! It is not a daily but monthly limit. When it runs out you will not be able to download until the next month.

Hey thanks, Jim! That's very kind of you. It's a start. The listing on Joe Doolin is somewhat limited in that there is no biographical info, but it seems quite comprehensive in listings of his work.
I noticed a reference to a 'Biographical Dictionary of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists 1988', so perhaps I can look into that.

I have previously seen some Golden Age comics on Usenet (a.b.p.comics) -- there seems to be some overlap with what is posted here, I suspect they were reposts of what's in your archive, though I don't recall having seen a link.
My interests are "mid-century illustration" generally, and editorial cartooning back to the 19th century -- it was Gillray and Joseph Keppler (of "Puck") who first excited my interest.
Of Golden Age material, I'm least interested in superheroes (except really odd ones, like those of Fletcher Hanks), and more interested in social and editorial commentary.

I found this site through google . Since i found it i downloaded a comic story to my computer only to find that i could not open it. It seems that i need to download a program to open it ?? i googled the type of file & found lots of downloads for sale.. are there any good ones free
or what is the best at a reasonable fee ? Collecting golden age stories with hot rods,midget,jalopy, & stock car racing.

Several free are available. We have our own coming up soon. I think most people use CDisplay. Or you can change the estensions from cbz to zip or cbr to rar and open with uncompression program

The comic book writer/artist Erik Larsen (of Savage Dragon fame) mentioned it when someone asked about where to find classic Captain Marvel stories in the forums of savagedragon.com
Also, he's been using the Golden Age Daredevil character in recent issues Savage Dragon so this got me interested in that character, and I've been interested in Captain Marvel much longer.

I have found that on my Arnova my comic reader does better reading the files as individual jpgs than as cbz. So you may want to try that.

I also copied the url and all other info (password etc) needed into a text page and put that on an External Hard drive so I can find it again......... I didn't want to take the risk of a computer crash without being prepared. ;)

Basically, I knew of this site for a while but never searched it out. I am an avid supporter of the use of PD material and I have written or weighed in on amicus briefs against the mpaa riaa and others. I have a dual degree MFA/JD and as an artist I find the availability of these comics of high value what with the different script writers , inking and coloring etc. quite unique...I love this place.

I found this site on google while researching public domain superheroes. I have been interested in heroes that have some sort of pedigree, but anyone can use for some time. Most of the medium's prime movers are under lock and key, however, it seems there is renewed interest in guys like the original Daredevil, Stardust the Super-Wizard, etc. Just thought I would see what treasures might could do with a little dusting off!

There were plenty of Romance comics published during the Golden Age of comics (1940-50s). You'll find some here at CB+ among the following publishers: Ace, Ajax-Farrell. I studied for a few years with the late, great Will Eisner.
I collect Sequential Art in many forms. Lynd Ward is one of my favorite artists.
Once I figure out what is legal to post and what is already scanned, I'll dig through my classics pile and contribute what I can to the collection.

I only met the late great Will Eisner once- when he came to be a guest speaker at the Kubert School while I was attending it- very early 1980s.
Must have been great to have actually studied with him.
I have many "favorite" artists. Of the old illustrators from the era of Ward I am particularly fond of the artists who worked in the Brandywine tradition such as Pyle, Wyeth, Schoonover, Dunn, Cornwell, Schaeffer. etc...
If you have any questions about what is okay to post you can ask us and we'll check it out. I can tell you up front that pretty much all DC and Marvel stuff is verboten and for that matter only a very limited amount of material from 1960 forward is okay.

Hello, I just joined the site. I'm always looking around for sites with vintage publications. My interests cover the entire history of comics + the various magazines, pulps, newspaper strips etc. which preceded the comic book format. I've found lots of interesting things on The Internet Archive and at Digital Comic Museum as well as Yahoo and Google groups. I like things as disparate as The Beano and Plastic Man, Alan Class and Rupert the Bear. If anyone has scans of old British fanzine "Fantasy Advertiser" which used to be edited by Dez Skinn I'm always looking for old copies of that, especially the oldest ones from the late 60s and early 70s. It was very cheaply produced but covered a wide range of topics about comics and speculative fiction.

You do log in separately to each. Log in to the main site and go forward to something. Sometimes the problem is going back and the way cookies read things.

Hurray, It's worked with Chrome. It seems the problem was with Mozilla based browsers. I first tried in Seamonkey and then in Firefox, both of which are Mozilla browsers. Having no joy with those I tried Chrome and was able to log in without a problem. I haven't tried IE or Safari yet though I do have have both of those installed.

Welcome to CB+. Someone else who's interested in British storypapers? You'll find a few in the UK section but to all intents and purposes, we can host almost nothing of D.C. Thomson. Copyright laws differ in different countries, so we tread with care. That said, there are still some lovely early Nelson Lee, Union Jack, Magnet, Dime Novels etc. in the Dime novel section.

Last January I was searching for Plastic Man with Google wondering if I could read that legendary comic online. To my great delight I found both Golden Age Comics and Digital Comic Museum: it was like suddenly discovering two overflowing treasure chests. There was a glitch though with GAC: when I tried to read something I kept getting "loading" on the screen (except for once or twice - as I recall I was able to read some Scribbly). Once when I got "loading" on the screen I left the computer for a few hours and when I came back it still said "loading". So I sort of drifted away from the site. Then after a couple months or so I tried out the site again and discovered Comic Book Plus and it was something like going from black & white to color: a delightfully expansive renovation - an already great site made even greater and funner and now I was able to easily read everything and found the software/arrangement more flowing and appealing than DCM. My challenge is time. I happened to find a rare opening in time so I'm able to write this intro. I have been finding time, though, to visit CBP and DCM every day or two or three: I usually check out the latest additions, the Random 12, and maybe turn a few pages here and there. I'm a natural comics lover and I've also found reading these early era comics to be of value for the study of consciousness that I'm involved in.

I do however live off praise (and beer), so nice comments make it all worthwhile. BTW there are a whole lot of new things being developed that will add a lot more fun and also I think be really used by members.

And am looking forward to becomeing a regular here. Thank you very much, already I have found much inspiration. I'm 44 years of age, and growing up in Texas and my dad being a farmer, we spent many days looking at shows like, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Big Valley, Paladin ect.. I think the western shows and movies could see another rise as well as comics.

I found you quite some time ago. I actually was a member with you when you were Golden Age Comics. I just hasn't been back to your site due to much happening in my life. Now things are seeming to calm down I now have more time to kick back. Speaking of getting the word out on the "streets" I hit an average of probably 30 to 40 sites a week or more for comics info around the world in places like India, Malaysia, South Africa, you get the idea. I also probably hit/visit 50 or 60 blogs or more per week as well. Now I bookmark all these places. Would you like me to drop a line add this site as there is a link there to typically leave to add a ULR or "Like" on Face Book or such. If you'd be interested, please let me know your proper method,way, or preferred message if you like, or if you are not interested, then not an issue at all is it? In either event it was just a thought.

That is a VERY VERY good question !!
On a very basic level, links to sites do not just generate visitors. They also let the search engines know that people are interested in the site being linked to. The more links, the better Google thinks you are. I put a LOT of caveats on that.
That is why we are locked in mortal combat with spammers. I believe their main aim is to get a boost in rankings for their site. People clicking is secondary.
Now say I put a links to our site on Organic Carrot Growing, Early Baby Development, Redesign Your Garage etc ... all legit sites ... but not really relevant and not helpful for those sites. Then SPAM ALERT bleep bleep and Google boots you.
Now even worse. Say the links are on sites that have been up to naughty stuff themselves. They have been spamming and swapping links. And now we have put one on there to our site. Doesn't look good does it... lol
So in an ideal world people will link to CB+ organically. There is summat good they found and they then link to it. GREAT. And if they mention us in Early Baby Development, then that is what happened and providing there are not a lot of other non-related sites that is cool.
But back to your question. Sure PLEASE LINK AWAY. Make sure they are clickable (where possible) and also legit sites. And also that there is a good reason for the link.

I am well off topic now, but it's a subject that I find REALLY interesting. Nerd that I am! The question is how to get more visitors and retain them? Now I guess you have seen/heard people offer to get sites to the top of Google search pages.
Now if you think about it. If they can do that, then that would mean that any site (no matter how bad) would, providing they were paid and did "the magic" appear at the top. Then users would click on the link .. find that it was rubbish and be dissatisfied. A few more like that and they'd leave to find a better search engine. Also, if they can do that why are they selling their services for a few hundred bucks. If I knew how to game the system I'd keep very quiet and make billions by creating my own sites :)
Did you know that Google puts in changes virtually very day. Tweaks and then real big changes a few times a year. Also .... they claimed (I think it is more now) that over 300 signals are used to decide on which pages to return in search results. (Bing claims 1,000+). That is for each page! And do they tell you what they are? NO!
But apart from the obvious (search words are there) .. they are things like how quickly does the page load, and low bounce rate. (That is people hitting a page and then immediately clicking the back button).
The message that they keep trying to drum into people is, spend your time creating unique, high quality content. Spend your time and effort on that rather than try to find ways to game the system. Anyway, that is what we are trying to do here and one of the main reasons why I got involved here. A site with great content and a community is a very good starting place to build on.
BTW for anyway one who has a website/blog then these are two first rate articles. You pretty much don't need anything else :)

The guy says NASA is a really disorganized site they pay no attention to trying to lure visitors in BUT the site is highly successful because they have spaceships! In other words interesting content. Well we have our spaceship in the form of our comics!

A top Google guy who's message is would your visitors trust your site with their credit card details or to buy on line meds. Have you the right signals, lots of little things that add up (eg: spelling,contact details etc). Do you look professional and trustworthy?
As a final interesting fact, CB+ has a VERY low bounce rate. Meaning that the vast majority of visitors are really happy when they land on one of our pages and don't click the back button. Now in one way this is actually too good! It means that we are just too targeted. As a group our visitors are too happy! (lots of too's there) So ideally we want to increase the numbers, open up the demographics a bit. So we'll have more visitors and a few more percentage wise who are not happy. So saying it's a very nice problem to have. I just mention this as an example of why it is all rather intriguing to me.

As with Richard, I visit a number of sites regularly and we've benefited by being able to get permission to host material from some of them but it hadn't occurred to ask if we could post a link to CB+ on them. While I've been a bit unimaginative there, I do get to a number of marts and always manage to introduce CB+ to the conversation when I'm chatting to other punters and the occasional comics creator and some of it must stick. I hope. I can ask a couple of sites if they would be willing to put up a link to CB+, if that is o.k. My only slight worry is having links to us on sites which host well known copyright material - would it reflect badly on us? There are a lot of KFS scans out there, never mind the major publishers.
The other thing is, if we ask for links we should reciprocate and our "Blogs and Site Links" section isn't the best place for a quick link and we might need a simple list of links, such as are on many blogs and sites.
Don't know if any of the above makes sense but that's my tuppence worth.

Well, we don't want to go around swapping links, with all and sundry. That is not a very good idea, as it purely us trying to gain ranking advantage. You sort of have to get into the Google et al mindset. Google employees are top players. As a developer if they pick up the phone you come running! So you will never beat them at their own game.
It is good to link. It is the way the web works. Now I have been quite liberal with links to GCD and DCM. They are both a major resources and it is helpful to let people know about them, if they don't already. Also the recent Self-Promotion section. In a way it is not a good idea ... but it is offering a service to members to give a shout for their site/product and hopefully other members may get something out of it.
Now the interesting question is can links to your site cause you damage. It is hotly debated. If so then I could go around very dodgy spammy sites and put links in to my major competitor. That would then cause him to be "associated" with spammy sites and his rankings crash. So on one level no. BUT if you are have a lot of links on your site heading back to these sites ... well then who knows. You look guilty to me!
It is VERY complex maths the search engines are doing.
Also there are some sites like wikipedia that have the linking set up so that they do not pass any of their "love" to you. So the link does nothing to help your rankings. Many forums are set up like this. We pass our love on though! It is actually a BIG bone of contention. Do a search and Wikipedia is nearly always at the top. Cos we are all linking to it and helping its rankings but it does not pass it back. This is they claim to dissuade spammers. But a lot of us are not very happy about it. I love using Wikipedia, but this makes me grumpy.
As a final little touch people try to do this hiding their link swapping. So you put one link out and get one back but from a site far down the chain.
site a -> site b -> site c -> site d -> site a
BOY when they bust you on that one (which inevitably happens) it is a LONG road to recovery.

I was looking around the web for some more Durango kid .My dad turns 71 in two weeks and his only request for a gift was a comic book from his child hood. He grew up in a tough home and his escape was the 25 cent matinee and the 10 cent comic book , his favorite being the Durango kid. I tried to buy one on line but sorta got ripped off only getting the cover. So I go looking for more and find yoiu guys ...WHat a nice surprize .... I can share with my dad many comics instead of the only the one I could afford but never really got ....thank you so much for letting me join and sharing your stuff with me .

There's a lot to take in on your site, thanks for the link. Strangely, although being a died in the wool comics nut for ever, it seems like, I have never got into figures. The only one I have, or have ever had, is a wee Phantom model someone gave me years ago. Comics now, that's different, piles of them - big piles, little piles, piles everywhere (film buffs should get the (slightly altered) allusion to Hue and Cry. If not, shame on you. ;D

I found CB completely by accident. I was looking for comic strips in newspapers that I read as a kid. I was simply looking to see if they could be found on the internet somewhere. I was a comic collector for many years as a kid to my late 20's.

Yesterday, on a whim, I decided to look up the Monster Society of Evil on Wikipedia to see what they had to say about it. I was surprised to see they had a link to this site that had the whole saga. I was astonished to see that this site had nearly ALL of the classic Golden Age Fawcett comics of Captain Marvel and his Family available for FREE!!! It felt like Christmas! (And in a way it is!)
I've been an off-and-on comics fan for years, way too young to have been around for the Golden Age, and the cost of collecting the originals always seemed prohibitive. But every now and then I'd get glimpses of the Captain Marvel comics, and it seemed like there was a cleverness and inventiveness to them that many other comics lacked. I could believe these were the best selling comics from the best selling period in American comics history. I can't describe how excited I am at the opportunity to read them all.

I was looking for "Tit-Bits Science Fiction Library" - the entry on Google mentioned '...comics', so I came on in. No chance of the SF Library, I suppose? They were not comics, just cheap (9d) pb's with gaudy covers - fun reading back in the 50's.. :)

Hello senlac. Glad you found your way here. Those s.f. ninepennies are seriously difficult to find. I don't have any of them. Some of the other British members might have them, or scans of them, tucked away somewhere, but I think it is unlikely. Up toa few years ago there was a shop in Glasgow with a pile of old paperbacks and Tit Bit style "novels" but no longer. I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you. :-\
However, there are lots of interesting and highly entertaining British, French Canadian and American "pulps" to explore. Enjoy yourself.

I have been doing volunteer research for Joe Sinnott and his son Mark in trying to locate Joe's Charlton work in order to complete his collection. While searching I happened to come upon the CBP site and was very impressed, as were Joe and Mark. Will be posting more stuff including the extended version of the interview I did with Joe for Filmfax Magazine a few years back plus, hopefully, a new version of the splash page from "The Day Manhattan Died"(Gorgo # 5) and other graphics.

Thank you. :) Love this site. I am a lover of 'pen technique', and old comics and comic strips are the best way to enjoy it. I use an old quill type pen of my Grandmothers', an old PesterBrook&Co. inflexible 322, for most of my ink work. Lettering is another story. Don't care for lettering but one does need to do it. My current strips on my website (www.giggletoonz.com) are a different pen, an old Scripto fountain pen of my Maamaws that I inherited. It just doesn't produce what I now desire, in technique.

To Giggle-ite, re lettering: Back in the day I lettered some strips with a Scripto fountain pen and was happy with the results, BUT I never found a truly waterproof ink and my sweaty hand smeared the lettering while I inked. My preferred tool is an ancient Esterbrook Probate Stub dip nib. Back when I first started drawing comics I sought out this nib because in an interview my hero Milton Caniff said he (or rather, Frank Engli) used it to letter "Terry and the Pirates." I only found a couple of them so I've guarded them carefully over the years. Luckily they last forever. Unluckily my lettering hand ain't as steady as it used to be.

I used a B6 pen nib for my lettering back in 1986 maybe 1985. It does the job pretty good.
Pen and ink are just cool, when you get used to it. At first I got weirded out over the 'scratch' of the pen on paper, but it soon went away after learning the amount of pressure needed to do the job, combined with the proper paper/board. I like coldpress, it produces much better results when inking my cartoons.
My PesterBrook nib for the art, with a B6 for lettering work comic strips well.

I'm a big fan of giant monsters, so a friend pointed me to the site after a discussion about Reptisaurus. So once i get through the Charlton comics I already know about (Konga, Gorgo, Reptilicus/Reptisaurus) I will start trying to find other giant monster stories.

Well...I'm retired now, have the time to write, and surf. I found the site while surfin'. I'm an old collector from the '60s. My little brother has the collection at his home now. He has a huge book room full of our comics (some in plastic covers) and many old paperbacks. We will pass it on to my nephew, who is an addicted collector too.

I was looking for Sniffer & found your website in my quest. I'm amazed at things today as I'm from the radio, comic book generation. I'm eighty years young. At least my grandkids think I'm young as I can still play on the floor with them, they don't notice that I crawl to the couch to pull myself up, they think that's part of the game. Looking for the two episodes of Captain Marvel Presents the Terrible 5. I can't recall how I first came by my Captain Marvel Split! Xam! since it was released the year I was born but I loved the comic. Most folks give the stink eye but I find it to have a very unique hero in a very recognizable world of contemporary comic characters (of its competitors). I'd have to guess I bought it in a pack of cover less books with Captain Marvel being the only book not dead stock.

I'm 54 now, my birthday was only 1 week ago. I've collected many complete serials over the years (Batman,Superman,Asterix,Lucky Luke,Little lulu,and much much more) Have over 3 TB of my favorite comics.
Sorry for my English, it's not my native language. I'm Egyptian. I usually get my new comics through 3 or 4 sites ( other than the Tremendous Late Demonoid ). Some Magnificent site "Magazine3K" terminated don't know why or how, so I searched for old comics - most of the sites I've found are fakes - but I've sensed that this site is really wonderful so I've applied for an account and I'm really happy to be a member here. I wish I could contribute my whole collection to the site in the future. Thanks again

Sometimes, when you come across something that really interests you, you keep looking until you find that place that gives you the information you want. For me, it started back in the my comic book collecting days of the late 70's and early 80's. I bought a pair of Golden Age comic collections. The first was The Magnificent Superheroes of Comics Golden Age published by Vintage Features in 1979. It contained reproduced 12 comic book stories in black and white featuring such heroes as The Hangman, Daredevil, The Shield, The Web, Capt. Battle, Black Jack and Blue Bolt. The other collection was The Golden Age Review published by Superlith, Incorporated, in 1978. It featured additional heroes not included in the first: Bulletman, Spy Smasher, Blue Beetle, Black Hood, Green Lama and Airboy as well as others. These stories were also reproduced in black and white. Both collections were $5 a piece. The nice thing about The Golden Age Review collection was that it contains a little background info on the character, its creator and artist(s). Also, it provided cover reproductions, albeit black and white like the stories, but I still enjoyed both and still own both. It recent months I've been revisiting my comic collection and interests, and my research only naturally led me to this site. It's a fabulous site!

I was searching Charlie Chan comic strips and ended up here, but I didn't join. Looking up Dick Briefer's Frankie, ended up here. Didn't join. Yesterday I was looking for Joe Palooka comic books, ended up here, finally joined.
I have a long and spotted career in comics, worked for Marvel summers and after school through out high school. Was talked out of the career by Bernard Kriegstein(sp?)worked at and even co-owned several comic shops from the time I was 12 until a couple of years ago. I am still affiliated with a few.
I have works in film and television, proud Emmy, MTV, and Peabody winner, as well as multiple Grammy, Oscar nominee. For music videos and Documentaries. I look forward to enjoying the site and hopefully contributing.

Hi. I was doing a Google search to see the going prices on a number of 1950s comics to see whether I might expect to ever afford them. I had limited success in finding out what prices are (except for really high-grade stuff, and I'm looking for reading copies). But one of the comics I was looking for turned out to be available for free download here, so I joined up.
I have some suspicion I'll wind up using the forums as much as the downloading opportunity. My main interest is in the period generally considered to fall in between the Golden Age and the Silver Age, when there were fewer costumed characters and a wider variety of comics in other genres. Those comics seem to be a bit more obscure, and harder to find or to even get information about.
In any case, this site looks like a nice find. Thanks for being here! I'm already considering how I might be in a position to support the site.

I was doing research for my Masters in Fine Arts, which includes a background in comics and graphics novels. It looked like Comics Novel #1 (https://comicbookplus.com/?dlid=18655) might have been the first graphic novel, published in 1947, but 'Lenardo and Blandine (http://konkykru.com/e.goez.1783.lenardo.und.blandine.1.html)' by Joseph Franz von Goez, published in 1783, beats it by over a century.
But otherwise the old comics are still interesting to read. :) Oh, and people might also find Andy's Early Comics Archive (http://konkykru.com/index.html) and interesting site. It has comics much older than most of the ones found here. I can remember reading Struwwelpeter (http://konkykru.com/e.hoffmann.html) in a copy of COLES FUNNY PICTURE BOOK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_William_Cole) as a child. It was a hand-me-down from my grandmother. Nightmare stuff!

I discovered this site from a friend on the Harvey Facebook forum.
To be honest I am more of a Silver Age guy but open to expanding my horizons. I do Like Sheena and Black Cat so that's a start into the Golden Age (I think?).
I was really hoping to find the neurotic Harvey "kids" like Richie Rich, Little Lotta, Hot Stuff, Spooky, Casper, and Little Dot.
I guess they are not free domain yet or not a focus of this group.
I have been collecting comics for 43 years. I started on the tail end of the Silver Age.
Too many books not enough time! I am about 22 years behind on keeping up reading on the hard copy monthlies I buy every week. Yeah, this is a sickness...

I've been a big fan of Golden Age for a long time. I honestly believe many of the comics are masterpieces of the illustrators art.
But I was COMPLETELY oblivious of this site's existance. Don't really remember how I stumbled upon it, probably a Google search.
After taking care of some pressing medical issues I fully intend to be very active here.
This site ROCKS!
A few questions . If this isn't the correct forum PLEASE direct me. The last thing I want to do is start off on the wrong foot!
I have the ability to "de-yellow" comics. I have a few examples and would very much enjoy any feedback on my efforts. It really is a labor of love for me.
Also, does anybody have a simple Access Database they would like to share so I can keep track of the gems I dl?? I could easily use Excel but would rather not. And I have neither the time nor the patience to learn Access development right now lol...
Anyway, a real pleasure to finally be able to participate.

Steve, thanks for the kind words. As for a list prog. I'm not the best person to ask as I'm a bit tech ignorant. I just try to keep my downloads under well organised file headings and as long as each issue is numbered the same way, it's relatively easy to check what I have. I think. Oh, and back everything up.

I was searching for some golden age books that I believe are in the public domain and this site came up in the search. I believe it was the old Black Cat character I was searching for at the time, but I was also searching for Phantom Lady and the old Blue Beetle around the time as well.
So I thought that the site looked interesting and that I'd visit again when I'm researching these old characters.

I searched for Treasure Chest comics using DuckDuckGo and found a link to this site. Some of them had been available in school, but there were gaps in what were sold and delivered to us, so I never saw all of the parts to the "Chuck White" and "Uncle Harry's Mine" serials. Yikes, I had to wait 55 years to find out what happened. My pleasure is worth a donation.

I was looking for free comics to download. I haven't messed with comics in quite some time and looked for comics to download instead of buying at a shop. At First I started buying comics from Image cause they are one of the few that I found that allowed you to download the comics. Then by chance I found this site.

Hi, I found your fun site while googling some of the comic books I remembered from my childhood.
I had bought and read the first issues of X-Men, The Swamp Thing, Challengers of the Unknown, and before that Adventures into the Unknown, and other Sci-fi and supernatural types.
I was not a collector at all, though. Spurred by the release of so many comic themed movies,
I wanted to renew my acquaintance with comic books.

I'm a fan of classic science fiction and pulp magazines. I grew up with my father's and uncle's collections of these - titles from 1951 to 1963. I'm also a fan of the golden age of comics and the series that launched the original Mad Magazine and some of its shorter lived competitors. The other area I love to research is the original comics/strips going back to Yellow Boy and Little Nemo.

A couple of years ago I heard about Black Terror/Green Lama from Dynamite, and their use of public domain comic book characters. I finally got around to buying said comic, and the idea intrigued me, leading me to investigate other public domain characters. Thus, I finally found you guys.

Hi folks:
I was doing some research on the "Let's Pretend" children's records, particularly "Alice in Wonderland" and came across this site. It had recently posted a new audio clip of a musical version of "Alice in Wonderland" and gave credit to the Let's Pretend series. But, I have a copy of the original show and the audio clip on your site is NOT from the Let's Pretend record series of 1970. That series was originally produced by a record company named Stereo Dimensions which was a sub of the Longine Symphonette Society which was also a watch maker. Anyway, there is precious little information about the actors, etc., on these Let's Pretend records. As for your audio clip, the show is extremely well done and the quality is superb. But, I want to know its source. What is the record label? What is the name of the Album and who recorded it and anything else I can find out about it including the recording date. Any help along these lines would be greatly appreciated.
As an aside, I am ADHD, dyslexic and have astigmatism in my eyes. I learned to read by way of Dell comics in the 1940s and 50s. I could read the words in the captions, stop and look at the frame and go on to the next. That was I could read for long periods of time.

I have a fairly extensive comic book collection. As a part of that, I have a few of older golden and silver age comics with no front or back cover so I was searching the internet for information and found this site. I was able to identify the issue of several of my uncovered comics by matching the first inside pages of my comics to the comics you have on this site. thanks very much. i also like the suggestion of a comic book to read each week. I just finished reading the current Horror comic you suggested just in time for halloween.

Welcome Mahesh. The books you want are not public domain so not available here. You may be able to find very cheap copies though. I would suggest that you look in the Charlton section. They had a lot of space comics.

Not exactly new have been a member for a little while, been out of action due to health. My grandfather was a sailor during WWII he brought home comic he had collected to my father, who continued to collect through late 40's early 50's mostly Fawcett and Quality comic unfortunately may were lost due to a hurricane here in 1979 so I had been searching for golden age comics online. Most I look for Fawcett comics as I remember my grandfather reading Captain Marvel to me when I was little.

I'm not sure that I've ever posted an introduction here or not but for the most part, I've been a member here for a while now (not even sure when I joined). LOL But my story of online comics in a nutshell is this:
I was in a few porn sites and one of them had a section for mainstream comic books (non-porn) and I started to get into comic scans... From there I found my way to zcult and then we went to comics UK (like a request forum for pirate bay torrents) and eventually I got the foolish notion that I have comics that aren't being shared online yet and I could help the community (silly me)... I found my way into other forums and torrent sites and continued to scan stuff from my personal collection. Eventually someone in the forums, mentioned that I should join the DC++ hubs and get more help from people there... It took me about 2 years to take that advice. Eventually I started exploring yahoo groups and got into the UK comics and fell in love with the whole UK Comics genre as a whole. A friend suggested that I register here and that brings me full-circle to here!

I'm not new to the site ... I've been looking at some comic books for a few months. I've even posted a banner ad a few weeks ago. I can' remember how exactly I stumbled across the comicbookplus website. I was probably looking for pulp magazine material and material on Will Eisner's The Spirit and struck gold when I found CBP. Not certain. It's like a close friendship ... one day a friend and I wondered, "When and how did we meet anyway?" Hi, Found you by a google search. I wondered if some old comics might be online, and this site really looked interesting because you post only PD items. I'm really more of a Silver Age fan than GA, mostly because I remember the Silver Age, and I have found several stories here that I remember reading as a kid, most notably, so far, The Demon of the Winds in "Forbidden Worlds," 83, Oct 59. I've looked at a lot of the other things, too, pre-code, and GA comics. Surprising how good some of the stories are, and by the same token, how bad some stories are, but with good girl art, I doubt that anyone noticed the latter. Good to be here, and looking forward much browsing and reading pleasure.

I was doing research for an article I am writing on female Old West comic book characters when I came across this site. Looks like a real treasure trove for freelance writers of comic book characters/history! As for me, I am 50 years old, female, been reading comic books all my life, and yes still collect them at my age: favorites are DC Shazam! Captain Marvel, and Starfire. Also love looking at vintage/antique comics too.

I stumbled across this site courtesy of searching the web for some digital comics. Glad that I did as I have never heard of most of these titles. As my screen name suggests I enjoy History. Not just World or U.S. history but also the history of the things I enjoy. This site promises to be a treasure trove of information regarding some history of comic books and I'm very excited to see that its one that has really come to life here.
I just wish that I had more time to read the comics here and interact with others. Hopefully I'll be able to spend some time here soon!

wanted to find some of the comics i read in my youth.started when i was learning to read say 1954, got my allowance of 25cts,2 comic books and a candy bar,,found you by search engine,happy! then in cleveland hts,now sc bishopville.

I grew up reading Disney (Carl Barks), and other "Funny Animal", and cartoony Human comedic Comics in the late 1940s, and 1950s, but also had many of those starting from about 1940, as hand-me downs from older cousins with whom I lived (in Canada, The Netherlands and USA). I've been a comic book storywriter, storyboard artist, and cover sketch artist since 1985. I stopped buying US and Dutch comics during the early 1960s. Due to storage constraints, I only kept my 1940-1964 Disney Comics.
I found Comic Book + when Googling "Ken Hultgren comic book stories". I knew he, and many other animators at Disney Studios, left in the 1941 strike, and worked for comic book publishers (i only knew they worked for Western Publishing/Dell. I read that many of them worked also for Sangor/Hughes Studios in New York. That sent me directly to a page full of Giggle, HaHa, Barnyard, CooCoo, Happy and Goofy comic book covers (all of which contained stories drawn by Hultgren). I clicked on one, and it led me to your website's download/reading pages of that book. I was immediately hooked. Those books contained terrific art drawn mainly by current and former animation artists from Disney, WB, MGM, Lantz, Fleischer, and the other animation studios, ALL of which I had NEVER SEEN, or even knew that they existed.
Growing up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Den Haag, Netherlands, and later, Chicago, I NEVER saw ANY of those Creston/ACG or Better/Standard funny animal comics on the newstand, grocery store, or drug store shelves. Were they only regional? I DO have scans of one very small Canadian series"Merry-Go-Round Comics" - but they must have operated only in Ontario. We had Disney in The Netherlands (1952), and WB, MGM, and Lantz, later. But, none of the non-big studio US lines. We did have our own from Marten Toonder (Panda, Thom Poes), and other comics like Suske & Wiske.
I've been reading your books for a couple years, and downloading stories from various Internet sources for a couple years, and receiving many from friends. As I want to obtain digital copies of ALL (or most) of the US 1936-1960 funny animal and cartoony comical Human character comics (except for those whose art is not very good, but also want those that have extremely witty comedy or terrific stories, even if the art is not very good).
I hope not only to download comic books and comic strips from this website, but also to privately swap individual story scans and whole book scans from both PD and non-PD with other members, to fill in the books I am currently missing. Of course, I will make any PD scans I have, which Comic Book + does NOT have, available to the website, if they will meet their standards.

I know of "Rupert The Bear". We've had it all along in The Netherlands. He is called "Bruintje Beer" here. Many of his strips were printed during the 1980s and early 1990s in "Donald Duck Weekblad" (for whom I have worked, as a storywriter, storyboard and cover sketch artist for the past 35 years).
I didn't know Flook, at all, despite spending a fair amount of time in England during the 1970s through the 1990s. Maybe he didn't exist back then? But, I didn't really pay attention to British newspaper comics, in any case. It's design seems a bit too modern for me.

But I am addicted to Beeldromans and have managed to find and buy a selection - not only Dick Bos but De Kat; Tweede Pimpernel; De Moker; Lex Brand; Spot Morton by the excellent Georges Mazure etc.
It's formats and whether strips are text or balloon that also intrigue me.

We published Kaptein Rob in our Donald Duck Weekblad for some years during the late '60s and '70s. I myself, worked on (and still do) only Disney strips (Donald Duck, Oom Dagobert, Willie Wortel, Gijs Gans, Oma Duck, Kwik, Kwek, & Kwak, De Jonge Woudlopers, Goofy, Broer Konijn, en Joe Carioca).

I was looking for digital comics fills of old Marvel titles and Fawcett titles and I noticted some of the scanners (Novus, Soothsayer and Darkmark) also happened to post on a couple of golden age comics websites. Didn't know all the titles that were PD and golden age available though! It was a happy surprise! :P

You could google either Sam's name or 'USS Stevens' and might find the hardcopy edition on Amazon. I don't know of any other World War 2 south pacific comics that are autobiographical.
There is a lot of Sam's other work on this site though.

Thanks for that. No his name was Louis E. Murphy, he was gunner in a downed B-25C out of Port Moresby.. Rabaul campaign... He was the only survivor of crew of 6 men. Washed up on a beach, rescued by friendly natives, and reunited with Aussie platoon on neighboring island.

I discovered this site when I was searching for Space Adventures from Charleton Comics. I'm doing a run of DC comics from the 30's on up as well as some associated titles. Wow! This sit could really help me.
I've been reading comics since the late 60's and enjoy not only comics, but newstrips as well. Terry and the Pirates being a favorite of mine. Read the whole run. Dick Tracy, Little Orphan Annie all of them.
I'm a student of history and read a great deal about historical subjects. Not just political or social history, but history of things too. Music, Comics, Books everything!

Welcome! Seems you've come to the right place.
You won't find DC here, since their work is not PD, [In the Public Domain] we do have some very very early work from that publisher, that is PD, but not much. So pre Superman and Batman. But.... you will find plenty of earlier work from DC stalwarts of the Silver Age, Kane, Sekowsky,Toth, Wally Wood, Bob Brown, Joe Kubert, Infantino and Murphy Anderson to name a few. Also much early work from Artists and creators better associated with Marvel, like Kirby, Ditko, Ayres, Heck and Gene Colan.
CB+ has probably the best collection of Charlton comics you are ever likely to find. That's one publisher I myself have only poked a toe into so far!

I found comic book plus through openculture a couple of months ago, and have looked through a good number of the comics but haven't delved into the forum until today!
I've (re) taken up bookbinding during lockdown and started to wonder if the covers from some of these comics would look good on my notebooks. So I've picked a few and given it a go! I think (and I've been told that) they look pretty good :)
Has anyone got any favourites or suggestions that they might want to see on a handbound notebook?
I'm thinking (and hoping) that as they're in the public domain I can make some more and possibly even pop them for sale online...of course I'd be crediting comicbookplus.com. I wanted to test the water and see what people outside my family and friends think!!!

I'm not 'staff' here so I can't comment from their angle but on a personal level, that sounds a brilliant idea. I use notebooks all the time for jotting down ideas for stories and such like (as well as names of books I want to read, movies to be seen, quick sketches and so on - and shopping lists). I would be interested in seeing what you had when it's done. I'm pretty sure there's a section on the forum where you can promote your own stuff - or you can post a link to a blog or something.

Hi Vicky! Welcome. I'm not staff either, just an omnipresent nuisance! Since everything here is PD, [In the public Domain] I can't see that there would be a problem doing what you are doing. There are others who have made compilations of work displayed here and made a living out of them. One Craig Yoe is a prime example. And good luck to him.
Can you tell us what kinds of illustrations you particularly look for? That might help us make recommendations.

It brought back fond memories of me rummaging through my 4 older cousins' closet full of 1940s comics in 1950. Now I can read (and possess copies of) ALL the 1940s and 1950s comics I couldn't afford to buy, and didn't have room to store!

I see there is a magazine called Rebus, which is is a puzzle magazine. This of course puts me in mind of the fictional Scottish detective of the same name, which of course he was given because a detective is a solver of puzzles.

Years ago I studied Esperanto. An artificial language based on the similarities of several European languages with Romantic language roots.
It was intended to allow a newspaper to be published that would be readable by citizens of a number of Eastern European countries.
Found a download of the first and probably the only film done entirely in Esperanto, the Incubus staring William Shatner.
A friend who speaks six languages watched the film and told me that spoken Esperanto was almost Identical to Portuguese.

Hi everyone,
How I found this website was pretty simple really. I have always loved comics most of my life since I was a kid, and as a teenager and in my 20s I was completely obsessed with comics. For the most part, my parents would buy me comics during those years, and I remember my parents sometimes getting mad at me for spending so much of their money on comics lol. After I graduated from college and went off into the real world, I quit buying comics for many years. I'm in my 40s now, and around 5 years ago I started getting into reading comics again, but the more I would buy the more disappointed I became of modern comics. They were just a pale shadow of what they use to be, which is so sad. So I started searching for comics from the past. I was mostly looking for older comics from online retailers but in my search I found this website. I was so excited of the amount of material here! It's going to take me forever to read all that I want to read, but that's okay because there's no rush. I'm just sitting back and enjoying reading comics again! :D

I rather desperately needed to know the exact wording of some missing lettering on a page of original art passing through my hands at work. I couldn't wait for someone to round up a copy of the comic and in "googling" (probably for the comic book title plus the words scans or the word index) found you guys.
I had to get a copy of CDisplay to see it, as I am new to these download-oriented formats. I bet I downloaded the file three times before deciding the file was good but I needed other software (a couple of other items I downloaded to test were opened by WinZip just fine).

So I?ve been reading a lot of Jonah Hex comics lately and really enjoying them, but I was thinking that buying comic omnibuses is so much money that I probably should look into finding a free public domain comic website.... by chance, I found digitalcomicmuseum.com first but I didn?t like the format of the site. I found your site through the Internet while browsing for info on the Greyfriars School stories written by Frank Richards in the Magnet comic. I could not believe that EVERY issue of the Magnet can be found and read on here.
My favourite superheroes when I was a boy were Robin and Captain Marvel Junior. I always read the Beano, the Topper and when I got older the Wizard.

I will try to pick some and scan it.
The books on this site are PD -which means, in the public domain, which means no company has a copyright on them as that has run out in the country where they were printed. So they are all very old.
If they are new, they can't be scanned to Comic Book plus.
But please tell us about Egyptian comic books in your posts. We want to learn.
By the way, as I am new fella..........what are the comic books?

I know that Egypt has had a Disney comic book series, as I've had 5 of my own Donald Duck stories printed in their Mickey Mouse Comic book. I imagine that they have many of the popular American and European, and Arab World comic books. I collect the older US Mutt & Jeff comic books from the 1940s and 1950s.

I collect foreign copies of my stories, so I would love to get scans of my Egyptian printings. I'll send you a personal message on this website's My Messages Box facility and we can go from there.
PS: I lived and worked in Luxor for a few years, in Jordan for 6, Syria, Morocco and Sudan. But that was in the 1970s and early 1980s, before I started comic book work. So, I haven't been back to buy my Egyptian printings. I sent a list of them to you in a personal message to your Comic Book Plus My Messages box.

Sorry, the font size tool won't allow large font size of Arabic characters to be displayed starting from their proper right side of the message box. I can only get it to the right side if it is a tiny font size or a very short number of characters. And I can't use a period, because when I place it at the correct left end of the sentence, the program relocates it to the right side.

I will upload as much as I can. Also, I have 23 binders of comics and over 200 separate issues. I found that these are decaying so I must, in a hurry, scan them all. Anyway, expect something new soon. I am now uploading a file called MUTT AND JEFF.
I have trying to locate any software to convert PDF to CBR or CBZ but failed. Do you have any idea how to do so. Please let me know

Hi Sherif,
We have NO "Mutt and Jeff" comic books on this website, that I could find, as most of them are NOT in The Public Domain. But Digital Comics Museum just got Mutt and Jeff No. 9, a 1924 hard-bound Book compilation of the newspaper comic strip. Many, if not most of the scanners, who scan comics to that website, also upload them to CB+; so we should be seeing that one uploaded here reasonably soon. I assume that it includes daily strips from all of 1923. I read through it, and they are really funny and very nice early artwork. I'm glad at least those particular compilation books are PD.

Went searching for public domain comics as I realized that most modern comics just aren't much fun. Used a basic search. If it took much savvy to do you, I'd been been out of luck.

Looking forward to perusing. I'm 57 and have three older siblings, so I grew up with their interests as well as my own. I'd be on the lookout for the latest Spiderman, Daredevil, Fantastic Four and Defenders titles (along with the never-ending fascination with horror, i.e. Famous Monsters of Filmland...)...but equally drawn to the old circa late 50's early 60's stuff my siblings had laying around. I went down a rabbit hole. I've been a pretty big Popeye fan for a long time, like before I could talk. I also have been getting into independent games. Recently, there was a brand new Popeye game, officially licensed by King Features, released for the Nintendo Switch. And, in short, it's a terrible, awful, lazy, putrid game that nobody with any taste should go near. It's trash.
My unrealized goal, that I will probably never complete thanks to some powerful ADHD, is to create a better game more worthy of a classic comic of such age. But since official licensing costs, you know, money... I want to at least test the waters with a freebie, ie a comic in the public domain.
My ideal would be to latch onto something in sort of the same vein - a comic that existed for over a decade, had a large number of obscure characters, and create some sort of adventure wrapped around that idea.
I hope to complete something by the end of summer, as long as my attention holds out. But that's how I found this site.

That King features would license a rubbish game doesn't altogether surprise me. Their history with their creators and properties is not particularly good.

Funny you mention Popeye games...back in the arcade days I was a big fan of the Popeye arcade game. I wasn't good at arcade games and Popeye had the right mix of easy and challenging to keep me shovelling in the quarters. It was also the only game my girlfriend (now my wife) would play.
As for universes to turn into games, Fox had a huge stable of characters, realistic, funny, and in between. The comics were seldom any good--poor stories, indifferent art--but quite a few interesting concepts that could be moulded into a game.

I was a big comics fan in the 80s (mostly DC and Marvel) and had the nostalgia to delve into that era first, before I moved on to modern comics. Alas, I was very disappointed with today's 'culture' and instead of moving forward from my favorite era, I went back in time, a far back as the beginnings of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon comic strips and radio shows. Originally, I was digging into Archive.org, moving on to Old Time Radio, and eventually I bumped into CB+.
I am so grateful that digital scans and the internet have helped me to discover this entire new world of Golden Age Comics that I hadn't known about before! One of your other threads is titled 'lots of comics but no time' and they weren't kidding!
P.S. - Currently reading the Rex Dexter Compilation, and I love it!

Further down there are the Blackhawk archives, The Senorita Rio archives.
I strongly recommend the books in the misnamed, 'Super Detective Library' section, where you will find all manner of adventures.

Thank you, AS, for your suggestions. The Blackhawk and Rio series are huge and look a little slower paced. I will put them on a back shelf for now, but I will come back to them when I want to read a longer run. I am perusing through the Superhero and Super Detective sections. I would like to read a few more space-themed compilations (just finished Doc Strong), but definitely I want to explore all the different genres out there.

There are three ways to ask questions - for technical questions,
1/ Look at the top left of the homepage. See the menu with yellow lettering on a black background.
Click on 'Contact' If your question is technical or you have a question about the working of the site and someone from ADMIN will get back to you.
2/ If you just want to talk about comics (and please do), to the left of the heading COMIC BOOK PLUS there is a list in blue.
The top one is Forum. Click on that and you will find a number of threads.
Click on the most appropriate one and start a Post. You will start a conversation and someone will reply to you. Or read a thread that interests you and add a new comment if you are inclined.
The links at the top of each thread that are in Dark Blue that are pinned, are permanent. You post will appear under them.
3/ Just start a post on the 'General Discussion' Forum on the home page.
Please take your time. Read as many of the threads as you can, and click on as many links on the site as you can. The site is enormous and well-worth exploring. The discussions in the Forum threads are just as informative (and fun) as the comics, books and radio shows.
