I wish I could help you. I gotta say this doesn't sound like an ACG story. Almost always ACG man-and-dog stories had sentimental endings. I can't picture Richard Hughes letting the bereaved owner blow up the earth. He'd blow up the aliens if anything.
I admit I may be completely wrong.

I did a search for a character of buster in scifi or horror-suspense and GCD but no luck.
