Girls' Comics - an academic study.
« on: February 01, 2012, 05:04:45 PM »

There's the slightest possibility that this article will be of interest to some of you.  Apart from anything else it discusses a branch of comics which didn't really exist in N. America but it is also a treatise on the perceived effects of comics on girls and their parents from different classes. Not explaining it well so have a read at the text:-
http://google.shef.ac.uk/search?q=girls%27comics&btnG=Search&sort=date%3AD%3AL%3Ad1&output=xml_no_dtd&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&client=default_frontend&proxystylesheet=default_frontend&site=default_collection

or perhaps it's this link:-

...I have seen occasional repros of British " girl's comics " ~ really, analogous to the " romance comics " here plus I suppose the more humo(u)r teenage-female-heroine Betty & Veronica/Thriteen Going On 18 stuff here, I would guess ;D????? ~ Some WONDERFUL art!!!!!!!!! I'd like to see more.

I posted the links quite a while ago and it looks like they've now disappeared.  Apologies.  It is odd though as both took you to Sheffield University pages.
Here are some other pages but not in any depth:-

https://bringbackbunty.wordpress.com/background/
http://girlscomicsofyesterday.com
https://britishgirlscomics101.tumblr.com
This next one lets you read the full treatise by opening the pdf in the browser.

Paw,
OK Thanks. For anybody interested, if you click the DOWNLOAD link it may let you download the document immediately, but it can also ask you to join up before viewing or downloading. I went back to it some time later and got the straight download link. Patience pays off.
