What do you prefer to read?
« on: April 13, 2010, 11:02:47 AM »

Reprints of Golden Age comics? like the ones AC publishes, new continuations of Golden Age comics? like the one's Image's Next Issue Project or a new interpretation of Golden Age characthers? like Dynamie Project Superpowers?

I myself love project Superpowers and only like some of the stories of Next Issue Project. I havent read any AC comics but I heard their in b&w or grey scaled, which I dont like, but if the where in color (new modern coloring) maybe it would be my top choice.

As a youth I cut my eye-tooth (what the heck is an eye-tooth anyway ::lol::) on collecting as many GA reprints as I could. Marvel and DC were generous with the reprints and retcon'd stories and fanzines were plentiful. The only thing better than having a full run of DC's Famous First Editions or Mavel's Fantasy Masterpieces vol. 1, is having the original GA comics the stories appeared in.

AC Comics serves a niche, especially for those with dial-up or no net access at all. Sadly only two issues of 'Next Issue Project' have appeared -- I am in constant prayer that additional issues will come this year. I am not a fan of Superpower, but I think it is a matter of tastes and comfort, and I simply could not become comfortable enough with the storytelling -- no one can argue with the art, the artwork is top-notch, but I think Marvel handles retcon'd GA stories/characters better than anyone currently on the market.

I appreciate your GA geekiness, Happy!   ;D ;D

I'm new to Golden Age comics and characters (less then a year)

I remember seeing a picture onec of Black Terror and Tim and thought that it was a joke someone made (taking and old comic and changing it or drawing retro style hero). only last year I discoverd it was a real character.

I remember the thrill of those 25cent comics that had the GA reprints. Then Marvel went down to 20cents before DC and forced DC to do the same after suffering greatly in poor sales. I loved that 25cent spurt for those GA reprints. I also fondly remember getting my Alan Light reprints in the mail.

They don't really do the GA comics I like anymore. My favorite was All-Star Squadron, especially the first couple of years, or the silver-age JLA-JSA team-ups and the All-Star Comics book.

Most of the modern revisions are just a bit too heavy on the revisioning aspects and frankly, I think the artwork has been pretty weak in the Superpowers books although Salazar has been notably improving. Part of the problem with the artwork though has to deal with the over-coloring and computer effects that completely overshadow the pencils underneath.

I like Black's reprints but he isn't very consistent or faithful in how he treats the reprints. He doesn't always cite the original sources and he does make arbitrary changes such as promoting Captain Midnight.

As I said I haven't read any of AC's reprint, mostly because I cant get them where I'm from.

I've been to their site due, nice art on the new covers but couldn't find any information on the content of the issues, meaning what is exactly being reprinted in each issue and that a shame because if there was and there was an issue that included stories I like to read I would have gone the extra mile and try to order it myself and not through my comic store

I try to pick up as many G.A. reprints as I can and have a lot of AC's output.  Even though they're in b&w, it's good to have the stories and as my main interest is the more obscure hero or masked man, sometimes AC are just right for me.  Like Ed love, I really enjoyed All Star Squadron and the S.A. JLA/JSA teamups.  As for Project Superpowers, I'm losing interest, although the last couple of Terror issues were quite exciting and sort of captured the sheer bloody mindedness and purpose of the new version. But it's all too flash and everything so doom laden to be much fun, in my opinion.
Narfstar, I loved those 25c. comics and it was around then that my interest in American comics was revitalised, seeing all those great old heroes.
Happyhuman, go get as many Terror stories as you can cos he's great and the later 1940's run had some really good art despite the fact they sort of forgot he had super powers.

Also known as a canine tooth -- the ones between your incisors and premolars -- or if you prefer the ones that are pronounced in a vampire's jaw.

Many of the AC reprint books are indexed on the GCD www.comics.org so you could check there for contents
