OOOooooo, those are good ones, Bowers.
With crossovers in mind I loved Usagi Yojimbo vol.1 #10 guest-starring Leonardo of Eastman and Laird's TMNT. It is also the only Usagi/TMNT crossover that Stan Sakai did not draw (Eastman drew it, iirc)

Also, Cerebus the Aardvark #1. It was the longest running comic book to keep it's same writer.

And, 2000AD prog.30 "The Return of Rico": Judge Dredd is the U.K.'s continuosly longest running comic book character and in this issue we have the legendary showdown between Judge Joe Dredd and his clone brother ex-Judge Rico Dredd. (and was the basis for the Hollywood major film production)

Having given this some thought, I'd definately agree with bowers.  So important, and most enjoyable.  I can't describe how excited I was when I saw that cover in the local newsagent.
CharlieRock, I'm sorry to tell you that there are other characters who have been going longer than J.D. incl. Desperate Dan and other DC Thomson creations. And I prefer earlier J.D stories particularly those illustrated by Mick McMahon. But this is always good for a wee argument.
But, being me, I'd add titles that might be a bit obscure to most of you.
Eagle #1 (1st. Dan Dare and a beautiful photogravure comic)
Corto Maltese - Les Celtiques/ Le Celtiche (although the most recent Italian reprint doesn't have one of the stories from the French collection)  this really opened my eyes to different art styles and the huge european market.  It might do the same for you.
Ranger comic #1 1965 - the first episode of Trigan Empire by Don Lawrence.  Doesn't get much better.
Lion sometime in 1965 (I forget the #) featuring the 1st Spider story.
Super Thriller comic (sometimes Superthriller) The 1949 issue with the 1st Ace Hart story. Classy, British created superhero and printed just outside Edinburgh.  A favourite of mine since discovering him when I was at primary school.

Don't know much about recent attempts at Dare but I think you should have a look at this.  There are a few pages from various stories.  What do you think?

Excellent art and looks like an undoubtedly good story. The DD mini picked up after a time of peace with the return of a major villain whose name I forgot.

I was at Collectormania in Glasgow yesterday and saw the TPB of the D.D. story you mention.  That was drawn by yet another Scot, Gary Erskine, a really nice bloke, by the way, but although Gary is without doubt, talented, his work in no way approaches that of the original, Frank Hampson (or the team under his direction).  While I'm pleased you enjoyed it, I would encourage you and others to appropriate the reprints of the original Eagle stories and have a wallow in some amazing comics.

Paw, the J.D. story/issue was a Mike McMahon illustrated one. And your right about the others being longer running. I was thinking only 2000AD characters.  :-[

Charlie, I feel like a right eejit. Not having my 2000AD's any more, I didn't check and had forgotten it was that early on.  OOOPS. As for the long runing characters, I think I was just showing off - Sorry.
However, it's good that others enjoy McMahon's art.  He deserves to be better recognised.

What happened to your 2000AD's? Is it worse then what happened to my old D&D's?

Quote
My Old D&D (& Other RPGs) Story
When I joined the army and went to Basic Training my father was married to a real Bible-spouting intolerant. My 'Wicked Evil Stepmother' found my box of books when her son, my then step-brother, got into them. She decided they were 'satanic' and pitched them. When I came home I found all my old Mentzer illustrated D&D Box Sets (a.k.a. BECMI D&D), several Palladium Games books (including TMNT), some GURPS (including the First Edition box set), and misc. others were all gone. Even my collection of Rock & Metal T-Shirts were too satanic to be allowed in 'her house'.

Or more recently my disastrous failed back-up of my computer files. (simply *poof* "Archive Broken" on every issue)

I hope it wasn't like those or at least my own tales will keep your misery in company. LoL

I have a hard time enjoying comics like Eagle or 2000Ad or the golden age books like Ace Comics. I like my stories complete in one issue. I just can not get into reading a page or two of a bunch of different comic strips. Just seems like way to much trouble to keep track of.

Charlie, Quite a few years ago, in a moment of madness or in one of my, fortunately infrequent, bouts of depression, I sold my 2000 ADs.  There were many collections coming on to the market and somehow I never got around to buying them.  There was also the problem of lack of space.  My wife seems to think a house is for living in, as opposed to storing comics!!!
When I was about 14, my mum chucked out the few comics I had.  Hence the reason I had to pay lots more years later to get back Marvelman, Ace Hart and loads of others.  Reason she gave was that I was growing up and had to study and it was time to jettison all that kid's stuff.

narfstar, there is definately a culture gap here.  In the U.K. we could read complete stories of M/M, Ace Hart and many more heroes in their weekly comics but most kids, I think, read weekly anthologies, both story papers and as they disappeared, comic papers.  We didn't find it at all strange or frustrating to read 1,2,3,4 or 5 page installments each week.  Same, by the way, for French, Spanish and Italian weeklies.  In fact, I believe we were very eager not to miss the next issue and could't wait for the paper boy to deliver or the trip to the newsagent to pick it up.  And as in the USA, there was such a spread of talent, good stories, excellent art (also a lot of old cobblers) that we didn't seem to notice the number of weeks it took to get through a story.

We did not get the daily newspaper but my stepmom did. When I went to my dads I would pull out a stack and I could read a bunch at once. I enjoy the daily collections of Phantom, Alley Oop and others where you can read a whole story at once. Probably not generational just cultural and preferential.
