Well, this is interesting.  If you use the search button for the titles on your link, you'll see what we have. I've just looked up Big Shot #94 and the ad is in it.
However, I'm a fan of Paolozzi's work and his statue of Vulcan is in the GOMA 2 in Edinburgh, along with his studio.
This link shows him using a comic for his work.

hi

paw broon thanks for your post

On Closer examination(must get new glasses). Seems that the dept isn't 170H
There is a H on the end so new research says this is an August publication
I think the other digits are possibly 379H or 378H because its cropped
Now with further research i think i can confirm the numbers before the letter "H" are publisher references. so therefore so far:

American Comic Group   2
Avon Publications   132
Charlton   378   changed to 325 about 1951
Columbia   329
Harvey Comics   303
Lev Gleason / Comic House   254
Prize   243
Quality   330
Star Publications   202
Youthful Magazines    264
Ziff Publications   376

most of the correct images I have found are 1951
I have searched on this site all August 1951 comics but there was no 379H or 378H
so in some sort of current conclusion i'm looking for a comic from August 1951
that is not from the publisher above.

If any one is still listening (some times you think you are going mad) and has DC , Marvel or comics not on this data base comics from August 1951 and fancies looking for a Charles atlas ad I would love to know what dept reference is on those ad.

Thank you for you time and patience

Didn't realize there was so much info to be gleaned from those department numbers.

Mike's Amazing World of Comics site has a newsstand feature that's useful.

Here are the comics cover dated August 1951 http://www.mikesamazingworld.com/mikes/features/newsstand.php?publisher=all&type=cover&month=8&year=1951&sort=alpha

Here are the ones on sale in August 1951 http://www.mikesamazingworld.com/mikes/features/newsstand.php?publisher=all&type=calendar&month=8&year=1951&sort=alpha

Hope this helps you narrow down the books to look at.

Hello to all, My first post.

"The only strange one is highlighted yellow, which in the comic looks like 2028 or it might be 202B."

I have Popular Teen-Agers no. 5

The AD is in the book and the number is handwritten in and looks to be 2028.

Hi every one

Well I searched a very large amount of Comics and Magazines over the weekend
and have come up with a list of Publishers and recorded the Mr Atlas ref see below.
basically I have either found a number which is the publishers number after which there is either another number or a letter. so for example
Ace Magazines is 255 and after that there might be a 10 so thats 25510 ten being the 10th month (October)
Or it might show a 225J. "J" is the 10th letter of the alphabet so (October)
Some publishers have Two numbers ..."none yet means" i have searched a lot of titles but found no Atlas Ad's
The nearest match was a bit weird Charlton had a 378 ref on half page ads that didn't match so i searched
about 100 publications but the number only appeared on the half page AD the rest were 325

One of the big problems is ....... and i hope you can help .... I have no ref numbers for Marvel or DC comics as i can't obviously find them on line. If anyone fancies flicking through a few Marvel and DC comics between 1943 and 1956 to find an atlas AD I would really like the ref numbers.

better still if anyone has any idea why a certain number was applied to a publisher you will get onto my Christmas Card List .....Could they be Sat Nav numbers for the offices :-)
