Goldenage Animation
« on: June 02, 2010, 12:50:41 PM »

Just curious, as I am also a fan of public domain Goldenage Age Animation, does anyone have any favourites? Any unknowns we can find on Youtube?

Also, I am also curious to find out if we have any animators here?

thanks

Betty Boop rocks. Out of the inkwell was very creative. Some of the old silent Felix the Cats were interesting.

The Max Fleisher  Superman cartoons
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=5&ved=0CCkQtwIwBA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DMb8iYqIVBzQ&ei=620ITL-jEoT68AaO9ZzHAQ&usg=AFQjCNEktT0vx1Yw9KPQN4gD1B2xDJ6dRA

I picked up several sets of the DVDs of these, perhaps the entire series. I should dig these out and sort through them soon.

Rookie Revue, Merrie Melodies, Public Domain. I liked parts where the solders were counting and other soldier forgot his number. Liked how the different groups in the military eat their food...

I thought Rookie Revue, maybe one of thouse cartoons, one never really sees....I like all the old / obscure stuff..

I watched Clutch Cargo as a rerun on a Late Late Late Show awhile back.
I found that while the old Superman toons are relatively cheap, finding them all is a chore. Most DVDs that advertise golden age toons and feature Superman will only have like 2-3 shorts of Superman and then the rest of the disk will be like Scaredy Cat or something else.

This was released in the Fall of 1941 on the eve of WWII , so in  was the last "peacetime" cartoon to deal with the Armed services.  I don't know if I'd go as far to say the humor in the Private Snafu cartoons were influenced by this cartoon or not, but you can see the similarities with regards to dealing with the ups and downs of service presented in a comicial light.

I did some research on the military build up started up in 1939 and found that it was a real Chinese fire drill compared to the neat news reel films from the period.
Inductees were lucky if they had a tent to sleep in and for the most part they just showed up and were then sent home for seven to eight months before being called back because their were no uniforms or any respectable training equipment at all.
Many recruits never even received any marksmanship training at all before shipping out, and those that did only got to fire a few rounds from WW1 surplus rifles that were nothing like the rifle they ended up being issued.
Some were issued parts of obsolete uniforms leftover from the Spanish American war and had to drill using a 2X4 in lieu of a training rifle.

It's a shame that Betty Boop is the only major B&W Animation star without any offical DVD releases. There was the VHS and Laserdisc sets from Republic a decade ago.

As for color animation stars - Mighty Mouse and The Terrytoons gang haven't had any offical releases either. Again, there were some VHS in the 1980's.

I believe some of the Columbia/Screen Gems animation had some VHS releases i'm the 1980's,too - besides the Mr.Magoo Theatricals and Lil Abner ones. I find it funny DC continued  THE FOX AND THE CROW comic for several years after they made the last cartoon at Colpix/Screen Gems.

The money just isn't there I suspect. So much is available of the old PD stuff for a buck. Younger watchers like a whole different style of cartoon that in many cases is far more juvenile than us old fogeys can take. I do not see many of them buying a Mighty Mouse dvd. At one time you could find Mighty Mouse or Woody Woodpecker, etc being shown on some channel daily. They do not seem to be appealilng much to the current TV audience or they would be on more.

I just remembered an old VHS tape I have of Bugs Bunny WW2 cartoons.
I'll have to dig it out and watch it again soon.
One had the Gremlin, another had the set to with Hitler.
Very funny stuff, and it wasn't that easy making people laugh in those grim days..
