man, I just can't get that book right.
That particular scanning was the most troublesome I ever had with the wayward top staple and cockeyed cut on the pages

and now I see that the notorious page 5 resizing that had gotten by me at first is now at the beginning of the sequence before the cover page even tho' it was listed correctly in the zip file.

Any way of correcting that?
Thanks

Both are now up on the site.
Thanks Rez!!

Sorry rez, once it's on the FTP there's nothing I can change but the actual file name.
I wouldn't worry about it terribly, people can correct their own copies if it bugs them enough.

Nice job all the same.  Sounds like it was a bugger to do!

I don't think I have a new copy at the ready, but it sounds like you didn't name the resized image to the same format as everything else.

Opening the original zip file I can see that all data is presented the same way and pg5 is in the proper sequence

but on that pg5 the title at the far right at the end of the line does not contain the title and in all probability that is the culprit.

Alas, it must have been the process used in adding the page that differed from doing the whole bulk to zip at the first that prohibited the title from being added to the line and thus altered the sequencing in some way.

Oh well, as YOC said if it's important enough to someone they can change it as it seems more complicated to correct than warrants at this time. Shame the succeeding generations of goldenagers will have to view an erronious file but bigger fish to fry in the many scans from the masses yet to come.

be a GoldenAge mass scanner.

About the Sparkling Stars 10, when adding a page you need to unpack the file add the page to the folder than repack it, it looks like you added the page to the zip file without unpacking it. Was the centrefold missing from your comic rez l have 4 blank pages 31-34. It was a great scan, you did a good job with it.

Yep, got partway thru the scan and discovered the centerfold was missing but decided to continue as it was still better than nothing. Thought to leave the blanks
Another tidbit of data learned about the repacking. Thanks.

Was just reading aussie's uploads of Smash Comics and marvelling at what great reads and artwork they are.
At the Heroes Con you mentioned, were there many Smash Comics available at the dealer's tables and what kind of dollar were they averaging for a basic classification good copy? Thanks

I saw three issues of Smash Comics being offered for sale...  2 were "high-grade" according to the dealer (I question one of them due to severe foxing and a long corner crease), and one was a standup VG for 250.00 US...  The "high-grades" were from 500-750...  didn't see any low grades, but I didn't really spend much time going through boxes, mostly just walked around and checked out all the dealers' walls  :P

Well I'm on the subject, I have a question for ya'll...  I almost bought a copy of Black Terror #19, until I saw that the staples were not on the spine, but one full inch into the back cover, which means that the entire back half of the book had a staple preventing you from seeing a one inch strip of art and story on the inside edge.  The dealer did not feel that this was any reason to mark the book down, but I certainly do!  How do you feel?  I would take a grade, maybe a grade and a half away for such an egregious bindery error (i.e. the book was a decent looking fine, so I would call it a VG+)...  Opinions?

Unfortunately graders only seem to care what a book looks like -- the cover, for example, is given an extraordinary amout of weight.  I care more for readability (and yes scanability).  I'd much rather have a coverless comic than a missing centerfold.

Yep, gotta agree with both of you guys.
I wonder what the GCD would have graded such a book?

Well, isn't focusing on the cover obvious?  I mean, to look inside the comic, you'd have to OPEN it (horrors!), which would then expose it to all sorts of horrible things possibly destroy the "value" of both cover and innards.  No, better to encase it in a plastic brick and assume that nobody would ever want to read (double gasp!) the thing.

As to the problem with the staples, it depends on who your typical collectors are.  Don't forget that, in most kinds of collecting, occasional production errors are worth far more than perfection.

So you are saying that the staples were centered on the spine going thru to the crease of the centerfold but the cut of the pages was such that the panels were encroached by the staples?

Definitely a bindery error that should lessen the grade by at least a full step, I would think. Sounds like that would affect the cover cut in some fashion also unless I'm out of my tree in seeing the accurate picture.

However, opinion here, with older books some defects aren't taken into consideration as much to a demeritus claim as might older books without defects which seem to be considered a step above the average.
Kind of a grading bend in goldenage where less books are readily available in any grade in comparison to the greater abundance of silverage.

So I view the overall rarity of a piece places a book out of the normal precision often used on more common silverage highgrade books. The diff between a vf  and f will show itself in the dollars

but say for example a DC Action 300 or a Marvel FF 90 which can be found fairly frequent. The price varience between a fine+ and a vg would be minimal if even taken much into consideration as the dealer is just glad to be able to turn it over.

But take a lesser known to the masses goldenage book like your Black Terror19 and not many dealers come across a copy very often

so if a buyer happens to see one displayed for sale just the rarity of the book alone can propel it above a graded guide price since the guides are just that, a guide, and I love dealers who view them as such and are willing to wheel and deal and put some of the fun back into comic collecting.

Those quality dealers are out there and when I want a particular book I'll sure go to one of those real dealers before going to some mega company's "price is the price and that's how it is" type of retail outfit who are more interested in the commerce and dollar value of everything than the overall love of the field.

If it's just a book I stumble on without it being someplace on my hit list and the dealer wants to play hardball with his book then he can keep it. He'll probably end up holding it thru a couple dozen shows and then put it on ebay, pay the charges and finally end up selling it around the price you offered anyhow.

dang but I got wordy. What time is it anyhow? :o

John Haines at Heroes Con price marked for Sparkman #1 was $45 took $35 and I guess we were both happy.

If there wer any Smash I would have ignored them.  They are just too normal for me.  I am the ecclectic esoteric collector.  It gotta be weird or real cheap.  I did get an Amazing man 12 and Yellowjacket 8 also but they are already scanned here.  DC, Atlas, Quality, MLJ, Fawcett, FH are not my real collecting interest.

John Haines is one of the quality real dealers I was referencing in an earlier post as opposed to the 'International Harvester retail market business sales' style one can see at many of the shows

of which I won't mention names as it serves no purpose but there are many.

Where was the Heroes Con held at? Was it a good turnout?

I was only there Sunday and it seemed pretty good.  Gary Fredrich said it was his best ever and that is pretty good for a writer as most people only care about artist.  I am more a fan of writers than artists.  I talked with Gary and with Rick Remender the writer of one of my current favs End League.  Spent time with Will Allred as he is a friend from the GCD and writer of Diary of Night get it if you can.
It was held in Charlotte NC

LOL...  the only actual purchase I made at the con was from John Haines too!  He is a great guy, I have been dealing with him for years on eBay, it was nice to finally meet him and have a conversation...  We mainly talked about undergrounds, and Saunders art...  oh, and paper quality, and it's importance to grade ;D

Or paper qualities lack of importance to most cover nuts.  I had a SA collection I bought that had paper close to perfect.  I think it should have upped the grade tremendously but no one seemed to care.  I bought an Amazing Man 12 from Chad? at Brett's comic pile.  It has a masking taped spine but nice supple pages.
He was great to deal with AM was marked 95 for 65 and Yellowjacket 8 was in the half price box so 60 became 30.  Considering AM goes for over 20 coverless I though 65 was not bad.

No Crime and PUnishment ??? In scanning I noticed that it is actually a Crime Does not Pay with the wrong cover.  Without the cover or first wrap I do not know what it is.  If anyone has read the Crime Does not Pay here and can tell which has a story titled "Who Killed Rene and Olga Duval?" and "Edward Saley" as well as a one page fact page about Reid's improvements to the lie detector could you please let me know what issue I have.  I have already scanned it so I could post it as unknown.
