So, how much of this Ken Shannon story do you folks think is Reed Crandall and how much is Chuck Cuidera aping him? I don't know either, but when you compare the Blackhawk cover on page 15 which is pure Crandall with the mock-Crandall on page 14, you'll see why I'm confused. I believe he's much better than this Ken Shannon work. Pull up Blackhawk #41 (which also was NOT inked by RC) and compare. Your thoughts?

I could almost buy Crandall at least laying out the first couple of pages, but after that I'm not convinced. Especially telling is that the drawing of Shannon's head is quite different from RC's. I've puzzled over many Quality Crandall jobs. He seems to have been fairly fast back then, so maybe he pencilled a load of stuff which was finished by inkers of varying quality. OR maybe he did quick layouts for stories like this and other artists finished the art.

The trouble is that RC used his stock poses over and over, and those poses were easy to imitate. Also his way of drawing women's faces, bad guy heads, etc. What could be Crandall layouts could just as easily be Crandall swipes (or tracings). While we're at it, Crandall certainly never drew Ken Shannon's head on the cover. It's nicely enough drawn, it just ain't Reed. Which probably means the rest of the art was also by someone else.
