Say, did you happen to have a copy of Super-Mystery Comics v02 003 (23mb)?
Our file is broken and I don't have a copy to replace it with.

Thank you very much! I have been wanting to see more ACE superhero comics for some time now, and so these uploads are most welcomed!

PS: A big thanks to freddyfly for his cool uploads also! ;D

A glorious "snow day" has given me more opportunity to upload the following:
Ace:
Super-Mystery Comics v03 001
Super-Mystery Comics v04 001
Super-Mystery Comics v04 003
War Heroes 001
Ajax-Farrell:
War Stories 001

Dell:
War Comics 001 (Dell 1940)
War Comics 002 (Dell 1940)
War Comics 003 (Dell 1940)
Michael, first thank you.
Second, I've half way through scanning War Comics #1 from JVJ's collection.
I've scanned War Comics #2 and it's continuation, War Comics #5 but not edited them yet. I also have War Stories 6-8 and War Heroes (a different series) 4-7 9-10 to scan. Please let me know if you have any plans on any of these to avoid duplication of effort.

Now available for download thanks Michael

Hi Jon,
I'm sorry about the duplication; bad timing. I don't have any of the issues you listed. I do have a coverless copy of War Comics #4 yet to scan. It has damage to the last page, but otherwise appears complete.

Fantastic job Michael, thanks very much for your flood of Ace-Ajax-Dell goodness!

Today's offerings:
ACG:
Commander Battle and the Atomic Sub 001 (allegedly has 3-D effect. After 6 shots of tequila you can just about see it).
Commander Battle and the Atomic Sub 002 (series is now complete)
Better/Nedor/Standard:
Thrilling Comics 019 (combined my own coverless paper scan with darkmark

Oh man, you are on a great roll.
Thanks for making this snow filled day a little brighter Michael.
Again, great work!
-Yoc

Nice, as will surprise nobody I'm especially glad to see the Target!
-
Today is Michael's day to be THE MAN. thanks

Michael -- great to see Commander Battle completed. You don't have #6 do you? That cold do with a front cover improvement.
Jon

Keep running, man! Good stuff.

As it turns out, I already had this one scanned some time ago. Narfstar's scan is missing all ads as well as covers, so I just uploaded the entire file. I hope this is okay.
Also, I don't know if anyone has started scanning Captain Steve Savage from the JVJ collection, but I have scans of 2-3, 5-8 from the 1st series, and 5-7 of the 2nd series. I will post what we need from those tomorrow so we don't duplicate work.
~Michael

Always OK with me to update my stuff.

That would be me Michael. I have them scanned but not edited yet with these issues #2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 13. Put up any of them you have and I'll fill in with the ones you don't have. I also have index cards for those issues with the artists that did them that could be added in.
Geo
-
Thanks Geo, I just finished uploading:
To avoid confusion as to which series each issue belongs to, I used the following file download names:
Captain Steve Savage (1st) 02 195112
Captain Steve Savage (1st) 03 195112
Captain Steve Savage (1st) 05 195206
Captain Steve Savage (1st) 06 195208
Captain Steve Savage (1st) 08 195301
Captain Steve Savage (2nd) 07 195503
Perhaps someone with admin rights could rename the 3 existing file download names to match these and clarify the series? The issues already posted are:
#7 from the 1st series
#5 from the 2nd series
#6 from the 2nd series
Also, perhaps Cap'n Steve deserves his own folder now? He is a veteran, after all ;).
~Michael
-
Ok Mike.
I've now added a 'Captain Steve Savage' folder and updated the files to match your titles.
Nice work!
-Yoc

Thanks Yoc. But no thanks for all of this arctic air wafting down from Canada to West Michigan. Oh well, it gave me more time to upload some scans. Here are some more:
Ajax-Farrell:
The Fighting Man 002
The Fighting Man 003
The Fighting Man 004
The Fighting Man 005
The Fighting Man 006
The Fighting Man 007
The Fighting Man 008
The Fighting Man Annual Part 1 pgs 1-32 + covers (original material)
The Fighting Man Annual Part 2 pgs 33-96 (reprints #2, #1)
The Annual #1 contains 1 comic worth of new material. It then reprints issue #2 in its entirety, followed by a reprinting of issue #1 in its entirety. Even the ads are exactly the same. Rather than rescan those issues, I just copied and pasted my scan of #2, and then Tigger

Thanks for knocking out a complete series for us Michael.

Well done Michael!
If I promise more Canadian snow can you keep up the scanning?
Just say the word. ;)

Great job Michael, I've just added all of them to the site.

Today I uploaded my original scan of Fantastic Comics #10, with the ad & text pages restored. It was coverless, so the scan is still missing ifc, ibc, bc.
I'm beginning a major upload of Ziff-Davis G.I. Joes. I've asked Yoc to rename the existing files so that they will all list in proper order due to volume numbers and series 1 running from #10-14, and series 2 beginning at #6. Uploads will begin shortly.
~Michael

All are now available. I went ahead and renamed the files; please let me know if I screwed up somehow. I think it's all good, though. Thanks for the books!

Good job, Mike! Now...slowly...unplug your scanner, take it with a pair of oven gloves, and put it outside to cool off. Don't try to reconnect it for at least 24 hours. Trust me.

Ok, I've promoted all the books and am editing to make sure they all show up in order. If somebody finds a mistake on that, please let me know. I think I've got them right. And thank you for all the books!

Great job MB and OE!

History can be made fun for many unfortunatly Algebra is only fun for very few. I have been teaching for 23 years and it gets harder and harder. The state keeps expecting more and more kids to be able to do Algebra but it just ain't happenin'. When the requirements are raised the standards have to be lowered to get more to pass. There are a large number of high school students who physically do not have the neural connections needed to do Algebra. I teach the low level Algebra so it is my job to get all these kids to be able to pass the TN state Gateway test for graduation requirement. I tell my students that they may not be the best at math but they are smarter than the morons who make the stupid rules. Try to get them on my side and I am on their side. I let them know that I do not think they should be forced to take Algebra but we work together to get them to pass the test.

Michael, that target you listed as incomplete is not. For some reason, when comics dropped from 68 to 60 pages, lots of them had four leaves that were only on one side of the book. On the other side, just enough stuck out to keep the page stapled in. So it's complete, just one of the books that stopped briefly at 60 pages on the way from 68 to 52.
-
That I didn't know.
A wealth of information in the patrons of GAC.
Cheers.

Wow, that's interesting. I'll keep an eye out for this in the future. I just figured some kid with a paper route in 1944 decided to use his hard-earned cash to buy some spy cameras and zit cream. Now I know better.

It's something I only figured out through seeing several books like that; I wondered why the pages were so carefully razored out. I have the last 68 page and first 60 page issue of Famous Funnies somewhere in my collection; that's where I was able to check some details and figure out that was the change and how they did it. I've seen enough books like that- even if not a lot- to confirm the phenomena, even if I'm just making a reasonable assumption it applies to the Target. I don't think Target ever had 8 pages of ads and none of the stories, fillers, or text pages seem to be missing, though. The catch is that those half-pages are quite prone to coming loose; if you get a low-grade book it's easy to have one or more of those pages missing.

It's very true, Eric. Fiction House also went through various 60 page issues with their books. I, too, initially thought that these were incomplete books, but, like you, I made the same observations about the completeness of the stories and consistency of the 60 page phenomenon and arrived at the same conclusions.

Here in Michigan, our current sophomore class is the first class that will graduate with much tougher requirements as established by the state legislature a few years ago. We too are already experiencing what you've described in regards to algebra. Just a few weeks ago I heard on Michigan Public Radio that the legislature had passed a bill stating that students can earn some of their high school math credits by taking a "math literacy" course. I'm not sure what that is, but it sounds like an acknowledgment that not all math brains are created equal. I'm just glad to be teaching core curriculum. With our state at 9.6% unemployment, there seems to be nostalgic appreciation in our state for "the basics." That suggests job security. I think you and I are about the same age. I took a little detour after high school--1 year of "discovering" myself, followed by six years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps, followed by undergraduate school, followed by a year as a youth counselor in home for troubled adolescents. I was 28 by the time I made it to the classroom.

Here in Michigan, our current sophomore class is the first class that will graduate with much tougher requirements as established by the state legislature a few years ago. We too are already experiencing what you've described in regards to algebra.
For anybody who'd like to make themselves even angrier about such affairs, I'd recommend John Taylor Gatto's "The Underground History of American Education," which you can actually read in its entirety on his website, though I find that the big book is more convenient as a dead tree. I don't necessarily agree with his conclusion that those responsible plan or foresee the consequences of their actions, and he's understandably thin on solutions, but he provides a wealth of documented information that may be of interest.
(As a side note, and even less related to scans, I've often wondered if algebra might gel better for students if the syllabus was guided, top-down, by problems, rather than presenting a sequence of "components." As I remember high school math, we just had to get through a bunch of abstract recipes, and "real world applications" were usually trivia items or vague generalities. I can't help but think that more students would have followed along if the "recipes" were discovered/presented in the service of attacking real engineering problems with all their warts.)

Thanks for supplying the link I will probably agree with most of it when I get time to read it.

Hi DM,
MB is kindly using the 'UPLOAD' link found on the main site. (Covered in detail in the FAQ and a visual tutorial in the Help section.)
He's been extra nice to even follow existing naming conventions for each title so it means the very least amount of effort for moderators to add his scans. Astrp3 uses the same method.
The only drawback for uploaders is you can only upload a single book at a time but speaking as a mod I certainly appreciate MB and Astrp3 using this method.
All these books are now online.
Enjoy!
-Yoc
-
Awright! Thanks!!
-
When using either the upload link or the ftp the most helpful to mods is to check the name and location. If things are named right and put in the right spots they require much less work for mods. Thanks for all the scans guys

I must have missed this page when scanning. Unfortunately, I bought this comic at a time when I was saving money to pay for a wedding, and so just scanned and resold it. Arrrgh! Anyway, I inserted Darkmark's fiche page, renumbered, and re-uploaded. Sorry.
~Michael

Thanks again MB.

Michael,
Could you tell me if the size of Harvey Comics Library 001 (Teen-Aged Dope Slaves) was any larger than standard for the time?
The use of all those 15 panel pages is something else.
btw Thanks for all those nice quality scans.
-
I could be wrong, rez, but I'm guessing the plethora of panels is a result of this being a reprint of daily Rex Morgan MD comic strips.
-
That's most likely it. Harvey did tons of comic strip reprints, all the way thru the early Sixties.
-
Michael,
Could you tell me if the size of Harvey Comics Library 001 (Teen-Aged Dope Slaves) was any larger than standard for the time?
Rez, the physical dimensions of the Harvey Comics Library are the same as a regular comic from that time.
More uploads tonight include:
Fiction House:
Wings Comics 059

Yoc, I scanned Picture News 003, but then I saw that there was already a copy on site so I did not upload it..

Surgery on the arm went well, except for a major allergic reaction to the anti-inflammatory drug they put in the IV. I told them I was allergic to ibuprofen but they assured me this was "in a different class." Hmmph. Anyway, I've had a full-arm splint on for 10 days and can only use the other arm. I'll be out of scanning mode for at least another 10-14 days, but I can still upload some scans already done. All of these below were scanned by bhcomics. Best of luck on your recovery, Michael,
I have a similar hard luck, post-surgery story. The THIRD operation on my ankle finally repaired a fraying tendon and I was doing great in rehabilitation physical therapy when suddenly over a span of a week everything started to deteriorate. I ended up worse off than before the surgery and it turned out that my body was rejecting the material they used to repair the tendon. After five years of three surgeries and three rehabs and finally feeling better, I had to go through it all a FOURTH time. That was five years ago and I'm still not back to where I was at the peak of the recovery from the third surgery. And I still have chronic pain, albeit at a lower level than before the surgeries. Sigh...
Jim's Laws in action, AGAIN.
I wish you well.

Hi all, thanks for the well wishes for my speedy recovery. My arm is still sore, but my splint is off and I have recovered most of my range of motion already, enough to be able to reach the scanner anyway! Tonight I have for you the last of my Wings Comics. I

Great work MB!
And if you have any incomplete books to scan you might let DM know and perhaps he can send you the missing pages as fiche scans to complete them or you send him yours to finish. Just a thought.
Either way it's lovely to have them on the site!
:D
-
Glad your arm is getting better. For your sake and ours. Thanks for Winging our way
-
Glad your arm is better, definitely. But I have NO Fiction House fiche that haven't been scanned. Go ahead and do your incompletes, and maybe someone else can complete them.
-
Hi DM,
I was thinking about any future incomplete books MB might be scanning, not just FH.
It's wonderful that GA fans and scanners can meet here and help out with these between us.
-Yoc
-
That'd definitely be okay.
-
Uploaded tonight are what I believe to be the last of my previously unscanned Fiction House:
Rangers Comics 023
Rangers Comics 036

Time to move on to other publishers and titles.

Looking forward to future books from publishers unknown,

Superb, Michael! Looking forward to more of your scans.

I re-uploaded Rangers Comics 043. Somehow the first zip I created left out the last 7 images. It's now ctc as advertised.

Could we get a re-upload for this?
Thanks again, the others look great! :)

Okay Yoc, try the Dead-Eye again.

Thanks MB.

Nice! I don't suppose anybody here has the Pulp-with-comics issues of Don Winslow hiding anywhere; do they? I would LOVE to see the early Mayer work; and all I've found is the B&W adventure house reprint of one issue.
-
I've been working on my history website all summer, but I took time out for a few scans:
Joe Palooka 067
Western Fighters v03 07
Enjoy.
~Michael
-
I would love to hear about your website. Can you post an url?
B.

Yes, please, Michael,
Comics history is my favorite thing...

The site is called The Authentic History Center, at www.authentichistory.com. It's U.S. history based on popular culture. It's a life-long project with many years yet to go. I just uploaded new stuff chronologically through the 1920s and will be working to replace old pages and add new stuff from the 1930s to the present over the next few months. I don't have much comic-related up there yet as I'm still collecting sources, but basically I will eventually have extensive essays on WWII, Korea, Cold War, Vietnam, etc. as portrayed in comics. Some time when I get one done I'll ask for feedback. I have to finish replacing old pages first, then I have huge sections on WWI and WWII music to finish, and then I'll turn to the comics.
Thanks for the interest.

Michael,
Your site is wonderful. Through it I was able to locate new scholarly research regarding John Brown.
Again, wonderful!
B. ;D
-
Very interesting site, Michael.
Should you need access to additional primary research, I have nearly complete runs of Century Magazine, Scribner's Magazine and Harper's Magazine from about 1890-1920, plus many years of Life Magazine from 1885 to 1915 and many bound volumes of McClure's Magazine, Everybody's Magazine and others. It's not just about comic books, as you well know...

thanks for all your work MB and a big thank you for Joe and Western Fighters now up

Michael, for your WWI propaganda section, if you can lay your hands on it, you'll probably want to at least read "The Eagle's Eye," by Courtney Ryley Cooper (story and background by the William J. Flynn, whose name you no doubt recognize from his acclaimed Secret Service stint at that time). It's not just insight into the era itself, but it's clearly the "playbook" for WWII propaganda twenty years later. And it's a fun read, to boot.
-
Folks, thanks for the comments about my website. Jim, those magazines should also be scanned some day, if it could be done without damaging them. I know that the few bound volumes I have tend to have somewhat brittle pages. I may take you up on the offer at some point :).
Here are a few more uploads:
Joe Palooka 068
Joe Palooka 069

Now up greatly appreciated MB

Looks like a site with some real potential MB!
Good luck with it and thanks of course for the latest uploads.

A few uploads tonight:
Prize:
Headline Comics 017
Standard:
Real Life Comics 026
Note: there is an uploaded file called Headline Comics 017 (Blue Streak) that is mislabeled. That appears to be the origin of Blue Streak from Headline Comics 013. Issue 017 does not have a Blue Streak story.
Question: Do we really not have any other issues of Real Life Comics? I couldn

Thanks for the two comics MB and the info on #13. Your books are now available and the other corrected.

Thanks very much MB!

Enjoy!
~Michael
-
Wow, great stuff. Thanks MB!
Umm, you uploaded these with the 'Upload File' link on the site right Michael?
We are currently locked out of there ourselves so we can't activate your uploads. If you'd like to upload to the FTP I can then get them up on the site. It's a problem we talk about here if you want more details -

Sorry, I knew the site had been down for a few days, but I didn't know there were lock-out problems.
I upload to the FTP under my name.
~Michael
-
Thanks, Michael, picking them up from there.
-
Thanks very much for re-uploading them Michael!
My hope is someday you and everyone else can return to using the Upload File link! It's the method I most appreciated as an admin on the site.
-Yoc
-
You beat me to them Yoc. I had just ftp them to upload. For bulk uploads the ftp was great when the site was running right.
-
Yep, and I dearly hope we can one day again use the FTP to add scans to the site.
Fingers crossed!
