Title: Master File Index, File Names, and Other Stuff
Post by: shazam_tx on February 04, 2007, 09:00:33 PM
As more and more files get uploaded, it gets harder and harder to quickly check for files already on the site. Would love to have access to a simple text file of comic titles on the site with title only. This would make it easy to scan and would cut down on the uploading of duplicate titles. I'll volunteer to create the first stab at this if you can provide a directory list of the titles on your server. Doesn't have to be clean, as I can work with just about anything. I do this all the time with downloaded files before I upload them to an Access database used to manage all the files I have spread out over CD's an DVD's.

Would also like to see ftp access to the files as I find this an easy way to navigate.

Mentioned already by others, is the use of padding in the issue numbers so that all will collate correctly when sorted. I usually pad by one character, i.e. 01, 02, 03... instead of 1,2,3, although some titles that finally reach 100 would need an extra pad character. The goal here would be to keep the numbering scheme the same within a given title  so that they sort correctly. I would also recommend not using such things as pound signs (#) or "Nr" before the actual issue number. Same reasons, as they impact the sort order. The really odd ball problems are those books that start out with a nice orderly 1, 2, 3 scheme, and then switch gears to volume/issue numbering. Totally wrecks the system. On the latter though, I've started using vxx nxx, again because I'm anal about the sort order. Keeping the alpha characters to lower case helps too.

Not a suggestion, but a comment, is what a great site you guys have going. I found you through a mention on Z-Cult and have been using the site ever since. I'll never get my upload count to match what I've downloaded, but I will keep trying. I'm just surprized that I have still have books which are not already on the site.

All good suggestions there Shazam.  If the search feature would show results for 'New' or say a month name finding the latest uploads would be very easy.

Having FTP access wouldnt really help you out as when the comics get uploaded to the site they get their title scambled so: Action Comics 01 might become 1035332452.cbr

This way if we ever got hacked the user would have a harder life rewriting the titles plus it also means if the URL's of the downloads got leaked our users wouldnt be able to type in goldenagecomics/folderwestorefiles/action_comics_01.cbr and download it avoiding all the download limiting.

As for a txt file I do have a folder of all our comics which I have backed up (its a month out of date currently) so when I get chance ill try to find a program that outputs a txt file once scanning a folder of files etc and when I do it ill post it here.
