I would like to see more Rocky Lane, Tom Mix, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Lone Ranger, Hopalong Cassidy, Rex Allen, Tim McCoy, Six Gun Heroes, Lash LaRue etc. comics!!
A question: If I find one of these on Usenet, could I then upload it here?

Most of them are fine but it would be best to find one and then ask about it here once you know which one it is and the issue #.

I thought Roy Rogers and Lone Ranger what not allowed. I uploades some LR that were removed some time ago

Yep, as I said, most of savvy's list were ok. Some not. That's the reason I suggested he post specifics of what he found.
I'm not a western fan at all so Aussie would likely have to clear them. But the Fawcett books would be fine.

I'm not so sure about that Yoc. Fawcett published Hopalong Cassidy before DC took it over. It is my understanding that William Boyd was smart enough to acquire/retain the copyright on the movies starring him. He may have teh copyright to the comics as well.
But of course you always need be careful with licensed properties.

i think Boyd had merchandising rights. The comics would have been like free advertising.

More information on Hopalong Cassidy / William Boyd can be found in Famous Stars #6, which I just uploaded earlier this week. (It actually does discuss him getting the rights to his movies and putting them on tv.)

At the moment I have download from Usenet the following Gene Autry comics (Dell):
#1, 6, 22, 26, 27, 73, 74, 77, 86, 95, 98, 116 (Champion)

I believe those are Ok savvy.
The only ones we cant use from Gene Autry comics (Dell) are #48-59.
The only way to upload them to the site is via FTP. Are you familiar with that process?

l would wait before uploading any more of the Dell westerns, Gene Autry was quite a savvy business man and copyrighted not only most of his own stuff, but helped some of the less well known western stars of film and TV. Thanks for the uploads savvy l have removed the Gene Autry Comics l know are not PD, any Fawcett ones are OK. The Dell ones will hopefully return later when we have permission to host them, l did try to get permission last year for Gene's centenary year but quite a number of emails later l gave up, it should be possible though.

I've heard it said that there are _some_ non-PD books on the site where permission has been obtained to host them; but I don't recall ever hearing what issues those were. Can anybody fill me in?

We have not yet got around to that, mainly because no one has the time to chase after them, but when the site is eventually set up completely it will be something we will be looking at. Any non PD comics hosted with the permission of the copyright holder would have to be clearly marked as such.

Not to worry Yoc, l do not think anyone but a S & K researcher is going to jump on us for making a mistake, the copyrights were available in the transcripts of the records before 1978.

You will not find renewals for the later comics because the term of the original copyright was extended by the changes made in 1976, if it was still under copyright protection in 1978, its going to stay that way for a while yet.

Funny, the searchable Copyright site only lists 48-59.
They don't make this easy for us do they? :(

The searchable database is only for renewals from 1978 onwards, most of the ones we are interested in were published before the 1950's so would have been renewed earlier than 1978. No they do not make it easy, but a lot of volunteers try and make it as easy as they can till the copyright office can provide online records going back further.

I was wondering the status of Roy Rogers issues in the PD? I see that JVJ has a number of them but wanted to make sure they were inthe PD before offering to scan them.

Roy Rogers Comics #27-43 were renewed for sure. It might be best to just avoid them.
