Title: The JVJ Postage Fund
Post by: JVJ on November 21, 2008, 12:27:47 AM
I'll look forward to seeing them back, Jon.
I'd like to discuss the matter of postage with you (and Geo and Eric). I am hoping that I can get reimbursed for the cost of shipping the books to you guys. Perhaps GAC can dig up some funds or there are some rich members who can help finance this project. I'm already over $50 into this and I can just see the numbers leaping skyward as time goes by. Despite the fact that I go to Paris, I'm NOT wealthy and am retired, living on a fixed income (and deeply worried about THAT, as well any other of you retired people might be in this economy). If some contribution to these postage costs could happen, I'd be very appreciative.

Thanks.

Peace, Jim (|:{>

There was some talk in the past of creating a fund to purchase needed books Jim.
I'm thinking this idea could do more good going to postage for you.

Would someone like to pick up the ball here?  Do you perhaps have a Paypal account people could donate towards Jim?  It seems to be the easiest way for international members to trade funds that I've heard of.

Anyone?

Please realize that this is NOT critical, Yoc.
I could just foresee a future when all of my discretionary comic budget is going to postage instead of new old comics. And I wouldn't like that. Although with the DOW closing under 8000 today, perhaps I'm being a little optimistic about even HAVING a budget for old comics...

Fightin' Marines #7 with another Baker Canteen Kate story just FTPed.  Another JVJon production.

It was $19 to send JVJ's books back to him so yes, Jim has laid out quite a bit for this project so far and anything we can do for him would be great.

Jim, I enclosed something extra in the box which according to your have list you didn't have, jst as a personal thank you.

I did (embarrassingly) find one of your index cards still on the bed of my scanner.  I will mail that back ASAP.

Jon

A pledge fund perhaps? If a few people pledge to pony up donation funds of $5 - $10 apiece or donations in kind (postage stamps, etc.)? I appreciate JVJ's generosity and I certainly would be willing to contribute towards the shipping costs involved.

Just my two pennies...

I'd be more than happy to contribute a bit myself, and I would guess others around here wouldn't mind chipping in.  Jim has shown extreme generosity in allowing his comics to be scanned and shouldn't be put out the cost of shipping as well.  It's the logistics of how to coordinate the thing that I'm not quite sure of...

Hi Everyone,
This is Yoc talking as a member of GAC.  I'm am NOT making any demands of you as a Staff member and the GAC site and admins are not forcing anyone to contribute to this fund.  But speaking as a fellow fan of golden age scans I hope you will consider the following...

-------------

Someone once brought up the idea of starting a fund to buy choice books off eBay for the site.  The logistics of such an idea made it a non-starter.  But here is a chance to really add a LOT of missing books to the site!

But it's time to step up if we want to keep the JVJ Collection Project running smoothly.

So far Jim has trusted GAC members Jon, Geo and soon OtherEric with scanning books from his collection without any problems.  We've all gotten to enjoy these scans at no cost to us.  But it does cost Jim money to send out these books and he is a retiree on a fixed income.  Surly we don't expect him to bare the cost of letting US get to finally see these books?  So for those postage expenses not already being covered by our scanners we need to help.

It's time for GAC members to help out on a truly vital project!

I feel we should be trying to make this project as painless as possible for Jim.  After all he's trusted what basically are complete strangers with books he's spent his own money collecting over the years.  And if you've seen the INCREDIBLE list of books he's willing to share from if continued it could add THOUSANDS of dollars in Overstreet value to the site for only the cost of postage!  You will NEVER find a chance like this again!  Please don't allow this project to wither just because Jim can't afford to send out his boxes of comics to our scanners!   :-\

And please remember - for many of these books this might well be the only chance we have of getting them scanned.  Many of them are so obscure you couldn't find them or so desirable by collectors you could never afford to buy one even if you could find them!  With this project the cost of a single choice book on eBay or Heritage could keep the project going for another month or two enabling Jim to send out dozens of books!

Might I suggest that some members forgo their next eBay purchase or that new BlueRay disk and contribute to this fund?  The number of books we've already added has been just great and things are only going to get better as OtherEric and perhaps even Narfstar join the ranks of scanners and we start seeing scans from these two respected members.

It truly is a win-win situation for everyone.  We can preserve these slowly ticking pulp time bombs for posterity and get to read scans of some Very Obscure, often Prohibitively Expensive books for pennies on the dollar of their Overstreet values!

Make me proud GAC members - please help!

-------------

Anyone who can send a donation PLEASE make a note of it here in this tread.
I've also asked Jim to keep us informed on his postage expenses.

So to start with Jim has spent $50 so far.

I Personally have cut that in HALF with a $25 US donation via PayPal.
I know some abhor the company but it seems the easiest way to get Jim the funds.  Especially for our foreign members.

PayPal asks for an email address for Jim - PLEASE use the following address when making a PayPal donation to the fund:
orders@bpib.com

Jim's outstanding costs as a running total so far - $25

Hi Larry,
Thanks for helping.  Please contact JVJ (Jim) with a Private Message to exchange information.
That's the little word balloon under JVJ's picture.  I'm sure he'll be happy to hear from you.

If it isn't too personal please let us know what you'll be sending so we can update Jim's running total.

Thanks again for your contribution!

I've pinned it in this section mostly because there wasn't any others and also because Jon + Geo have been announcing JVJ book scans here.

I couldn't see any other section that more appropriate.

ok, I paypaled $10.00 into the coffers at the orders@bpib.com
addy you supplied.

Yep, this is a fine thing JVJ has done opening his collection like this and certainly puts him in a 'Good Ol' Boy of Comicdom' status.

I'm glad to be able to share in any mailing costs incurred. If everyone chips in a $5 or $10 small bit it will cover the overhead to see this permanent input into the comic archives which will be made available throughout eternity to the now and future generations of readers.

In the young life of GAC this is yet another major milestone in the goal of the scanning presentation of all PD GoldenAge comics with hopefully many more to come.

Thanks, rez and yoc,
I do appreciate your contributions. I'll list any additional expenses here so folks can respond. And I just want to say how pleased I am that my comics are getting out where everyone can share them.

There is a responsibility that comes with viewing them, though. IF you happen to know who drew any of the stories that I've left blank on my index cards, I'd sure like you to share that information with us. There is nothing I like better than learning a new name.

As I have been discovering today, I've learned a little in the last 25 years. John Benson just today sent me a MSWord file of an index I did in 1984 of Harvey Horror comics (I think it was for APA-I) and told me that he was going to get it on-line to accompany an upcoming Alter Ego article on Warren Kremer. So I'm going through all of those books an updating the index. Back to work...

Thanks again, folks.

Thank you, phabox.  And everybody else, for that matter.  While I'll throw in if it becomes necessary, I personally think covering the return postage on the books sent to me is enough for the moment if others are helping.  You're not just helping JVJ out here; you're helping the scanners as well.

I'd like to thank everyone who's contributed to this fund and I want to make the whole accounting more transparent. In that light,
here's a list of all the postage expenses I've incurred up to today, Nov. 28, 2008

Jon The Scanner: $38.00 (two boxes)
Geo                   $31.60 (two boxes)
Narfstar              $19.00
OtherEric            $14.85

Which totals to $103.45.

Without itemizing them, the PayPal payments that I can trace back to the group (the anonymity of site names adds a layer of imprecision here) total $80. This matches what Yoc has documented, although one member has indicated in a PM that they were sending a check, which I will record when it arrives.

Again, thanks much to all of you for your support. It REALLY does help.

I have to agree with you Eric, as my shipping costs was $21.62 with insurance to sent them back, but definitely worth every penny for the books we get to see from it, some we might not every get a chance to see.

So please give if you can, so we get to see more of these 'jewels' in the future which JVJ has and is so willing to share with us here.

If he did we are short - $2.75

If he did not we are short - $27.75

Either way, gang we are all enjoying Jim's wonderful books he's been happy to send out to scanners.
The scanners are covering the return postage but we all need to step up and help Jim cover his own costs to send these out to the scanners.

Please, if you can help please make a donation to Jim's PayPal account.

Hi Jim,
I think the donation date would be the best indicator if PayPal keeps track of them for you.
I don't know Astrp3's real name either.

For now I'll assume his $25.00 made it to you and we are short $2.75.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Astrp3 mentioned a second $25.00 would arrive at some point as well which would give us a little buffer again.

yep, I just sent in $10.00 as well. Small price to give at $5 or $10.

and if enough folk would just take the time to do the process it would all add up pretty quickly to enough of a sum to keep the mails lubed up and ready for another run at the mountain.

You've heard it said before but it's worth repeating, this is a fine thing JVJ has done opening his collection like this and certainly puts him in a 'Good Ol' Boy of Comicdom' status.

This is a permanent input into the world's comic archives which will be made available throughout eternity to the now and future generations of readers.

Many thanks to Eric, Rez, BChat and Ubantuban for stepping up and donating towards this vital project!!
+1 karma to all!  :)

People, this is the single most important ongoing project that is running here.
A quick search of the site for JVJ will show you just how many books Jim has donated for scanning and a check of the JVJ Books Wanted List shows you just how many MIGHT one day be available on the site - but it all hinges on our members helping Jim with the postage.

This need will be ongoing so if you haven't donated yet PLEASE consider it.  Even a small sum will help!
Todate we are...

+20 from Eric,
+10 from both Rez and Ubantuban

I ponied up 20 for the fund. The Weird Thrillers, Authentic Police Cases, Crown Comics, etc. as of late have been very cool to see.  Thanks to Jim and all the scanners.  I have no doubt the library being built here will make the golden age accessible to whole new generations of fans and researchers the globe over.  That Jim is letting us scan from his mind-boggling collection is beyond awesomeness, so keep the postage funds coming peoples.   8)

Hi, Yoc,
the trip is winding up in two days. I should be home by Saturday (May 2). Nice to know that the postage fund is flush as I expect to get four batches of books back soon and send more out. Gentlemen (OtherEric, JonTheScanner, Geo and Ontology), prepare your lists for the next rounds.

I'll be in touch soon.

I finally got around to sending in my two bits for the postage fund, and it was way overdue. One of those "yeah, I really need to do this" things on the to do list, that just never gets done. My trigger was seeing Blue Beetle 08 show up today. This was one of the very first Golden Age comics I ever owned, back in my high school days. I remember trading a huge stack of Marvels to get it, which at the time were found locally for about 5 cents each. I think I got it from Claude Held, one of the earliest dealers in old comics. I just asked for something with Nazis on the cover, and he mentioned the cover blub, The Blue Beetle Fights To Save America From The Nazis. That was good enough for me, and I sent my books in and then waited patiently for this one to show up. It was important back then to get a real Golden Age book, which meant it had to come from '38-'42, and it had to have a full 68 pages. No 60, 52, or 44 pagers for me. My bible back then was Ed Lahmann's article in an early Alter-Ego about how to collect comics, and at one time I had a fairly decent collection, and all were real. Anyway, Blue Beetle 08 came in, and I was a Happy Camper. It was eventually sold off at a Texas convention, probably to fund still more books. It was always important to reinvest in the library. That collection is just about all gone now, (sob, choke), but thanks to all of the scanners here and in the Newsgroups I now have more than I ever imagined before. Thanks again to Jim for lending his collection to be scanned for posterity. Specially for Blue Beetle 08.

Best,
Herb

Many thanks Herb.  :)
In my actual collecting days I only managed to get one holy grail - WEIRD SCIENCE-FANTASY #29.
The classic Frazetta cover is amazing!
That beauty cost me a no-slipcover copy of 'Seduction of the Innocent' (with bibliography) and $100!

Just to keep our total up to date Herb, how much did you donate?

It's donations like these that are the best way for GAC members to help guarantee a long life for this the most important project.
Jim has been collecting for decades slowly finding key books and he's wonderfully allowing the entire hobby to benefit for as long as these scans float around in cyberspace.  Never would I have dreamed many of these rare and expensive books might one day be online FREE for all fans to enjoy!
If one were to total up just the Overstreet 'good' values of all the JVJ books scanned so far we'd all see just how expensive it would be to try and buy them ourselves.... IF you could even Find Them out there!

yep, kudos to Jim.

The needed funds for the postage is so minor when compared with what is being given to comicdom at this time when technology presents us with the opportunity.

If everyone could just dip into their mad money now and then and skip the fries and a coke once in a while to send in $5 it would keep the whole operation flowing smooth.

Just saying...

I received the $20 donation, Jim.
I didn't acknowledge it right away because it had your real name on it and people seem to value their various degrees of anonymity here. Didn't want to say anything until I knew it was okay. Thanks for the contribution.

Having a great time in Paris. Had dinner Friday with Jean-Claude Mazieres http://www.noosfere.org/mezieres/ (http://www.noosfere.org/mezieres/) and visited his studio. Today we went to the southern flea market with Florence Cestac http://www.cestac.com/cmoi.html (http://www.cestac.com/cmoi.html). It's always fun here. We're going to Belgium (Brussels and Bruges) on Tuesday where we hope to see the Atomium and the Frank Brangwyn http://www.bpib.com/illustrat/brangwyn.htm (http://www.bpib.com/illustrat/brangwyn.htm) museum, respectively.

More when I slow down...

Title: Re: The JVJ Postage Fund
Post by: NotAlbert on October 14, 2009, 11:32:11 PM
Just sent Jim $22 to kick the balance just past $175 because it seemed like the thing to do.

Quoting rez:  "The needed funds for the postage is so minor when compared with what is being given to comicdom at this time when technology presents us with the opportunity.

If everyone could just dip into their mad money now and then and skip the fries and a coke once in a while to send in $5 it would keep the whole operation flowing smooth."

Well said, rez...

Just to personalize it a little:  I haven't bothered to add up my contributions to the fund but if I did, and then took the total and doubled it, I would still be making out like a bandit when I think what I'm getting out of Jim's generosity and the dedicated efforts of all the scanners! (I'm notorious for run-on sentences.)  Every time  I see a new slew of scans at GAC, I feel a little like a kid on Christmas morning, getting way more than he deserves!

Also, I just re-watched the end of Bill Murray's Scrooged (1988).  My favorite quote from the film:

"If you believe in this spirit thing, the miracle will happen and then you'll want it to happen again tomorrow. You won't be one of those (Scrooges) who says Christmas is once a year and it's a fraud...it's not! It can happen every day..you've just got to want that feeling. And if you  like it and you want it you'll get greedy for it...you'll want it every day of your life, and it can happen to you. I believe in it now! I believe it's gonna happen to me now, and I'm ready for it. It's great! It's a good feeling..it's better than I've felt in a long time! I'm ready....have a Merry Christmas, everyone."

I bet I've watched that part over a hundred times over the years and it still motivates me to give what I can to a variety of worthy causes (most of which don't involve comics.)

Like rez says, it doesn't have to be much. If you can only spare $5, that's cool.  But if you can't afford anything, then just enjoy reading these rare comics and maybe later on you'll be in a better position to help...

Well, clearly I'm rambling here so I'd better return to 'lurker mode' for the time being.

God (or whomever you prefer) bless us, everyone!

=^ Dave

Jim only wants this limited number of scanners so he can keep things sorted on his end.  Bless him for his original offering and all the books he's sent out since we've started this, IMO, the most important project in our hobby.

Hard to say how great of a thing it is seeing Jim open his collection up like this and trust some folks he met on the internet enough to send books back and forth thru the mail as has been going on for what, a goodly number of months now. And the time these scanners are putting in their labor rates a high round of applause.

It's quite the thing. Haven't seen the likes of it anywhere else.
I believe we are on the cutting edge of an inroad to providing a solid long term provision for many people now, and many yet to come, to view these cherished gems before they get locked away in private safes encased in plastic containers or fade away to dust.

I'll raise a mug of ale any day to these type of folk.

Christmas vacation is coming soon. I do not think I may be able to do as many as last year. I would like to do one of the small flat rate priority boxes though holds about 40 books. Most of all the Hyper Mystery and New World as I really want these books, then
Heroes All V4:30 V5:2,12,18,22 V6:5,
Picture News 5-8(someone requested these),
CHESLER Bulls Eye 11, Cap Battle 3, Dynamic 13-15,18-20,22,24, Jest 11, Maj Victory2, Punch 18,23, Red Seal 22, Skyrocket 1, Spotlight 2,
GREAT Choice 1-2, Great2,
MIKEROSS Get Lost1-3, Heart and Soul 1-2, Mr Universe3,
FOUR STAR Capt Flight 3,4,6, HiHo2 What is the Superhero Book? I can not find it on GCD. Would like it if it fits. I know the variety was to be kept down but this would knock out some complete groups of what we need. If they are difficult to get to I will choose something else.

Nice.  I fully understand people not caring for the romance books in general.  But some of them have some of the best comic book art ever done, lots of it by Matt Baker.  Really looking forward to seeing these scans.

Don't be ashamed, boox.
I'm a little concerned in that I'm sitting on a couple of hundred dollars of folks' money and would like to be spending it on postage to scanners. As I think Geo, who came to visit yesterday, will attest - there's a LOT of comics here awaiting scanning. I'd MUCH rather the money was being used than being accumulated.

Not that I'm haranguing the scanners. I'm sure that they're all going full bore, but the magnitude of the task is rather huge. I think TIME is the limiting factor here, not postage costs.

Still, every contribution will eventually be used - I hope.

I just contributed $30.00, and will send more when I can. Thank you so much for sharing. And, if perchance, the issues of Western Killers (Fox) that have the virtually unseen Jack Cole stories show up (#70 and maybe 69... not 100% sure), I would be most grateful to see these, as I am working on a book about Cole's last stories. But no worries... I'd contribute in any case... admire your spirit.

All the more reason why every single possible PD romance comic should be scanned and archived, but beside the artists and writers on the books, it's a sadly neglected part of The Golden Age of a genre that has faded from American Comics.

Humor and Funny Animal get more respect than Romance.

Everything you say is true, boox,
but I would prefer that we USE UP some of these funds. There haven't been a lot of expenditures in the last six to eight months and it's not as if I'm living on the Postage Fund money. It's just sitting "under my mattress," so I'd rather we SPENT some of it getting some books to people to get scanned and then we can replenish the Fund. I've begun to believe that there's a hex on my comics and as soon as someone agrees to scan some, dreadful curses fall upon them. Please prove this to be a silly superstition and all you scanners please get scanning and help me spend this money.

I am sorry Jim,

I know how you feel about it, I would think EXACTLY the same trust me. BUT if we get the fund up a bit more then there will be no more "nags" on the pages of your comics (personally I really don't like them) and no more when will the fund run out questions.

Two years worth of postage looks good for me then it'll just trickle through. Sorted for a long time.

Apologies again

I HATE them, too, Mark. In fact, I would respectfully ask that none be added to another of my comics. It grates on me every time I see one (which is thankfully not ofter). Seems sorta like I'm asking for money to allow my comics to be scanned and that isn't so.

CB+ and DCM members have always been generous when asked directly. That's what I would like to do in the future: wait until we're down to $50 or so and then request donations. I trust the communities to react.

Okay?

Sounds good to me! Also I'll see if I can remove the nags we have.

Edit: I looked and then I got rid of them. EVERY single little blighter has now gone. If there was other text I left that and if it was just the nag I replaced it with "Scan of a comic from the JVJ collection." So we can both now rest easy!

Any news for us?

An update from Jim
I have been very remiss in keeping you guys up to day as a lot of stuff has been happening in my life. All is well, so nothing to worry about, but it's been an intense year. The Kickstarter for ImageS #13, getting the actual magazine published, starting and maintaining a Facebook presence, three trips to Paris, and a lot of personal stuff going on. Suffice it to say that I've kept Rangerhouse and Soothsayr in scan material, but that's as far as my involvement here has gone. I have not been balancing the books.

So now lets:

Rangerhouse
       03/15/2014 $42.60
       09/24/2014 $42.60
       12/18/2014 $42.60

Soothsayr
       09/26/2014 $42.60
       03/17/2014 $21.30
                 $191.70

Balance of the account is now truly in the red: -$82.54.

Please feel free to contribute anew to the JVJ Postage fund at orders@bpib.com on PayPal. Thank you so much.

Here are the fine folks who have contributed to the JVJ Postage fund at orders@bpib.com on PayPal in the last few days.

$22.82 Stephen Montgomery 12/21/14
$15.00 PIN & Inc          12/22/14
$10.00 Michael Gilbert    12/21/14
$75.00 Peter Szigeti      12/21/14
$125.00 Mark Warner        12/23/14

$247.82 - $82.54 = $165.28

Balance of the account is now solidly in the black again:$165.28.

Please thank them all for their kindness and generosity in helping to keep the comics flowing to the scanners. Thank the scanners, too, for THEIR generosity in investing their time and their money in making sure that the comics flow back to me.

Happy Holidays to all.

Peace, Jim (|:{>

Here are some more fine folks who have contributed to the JVJ Postage fund.

$30.00 Chris Hastings    12/23/14
  $5.00 Lou Mougin        12/22/14
$10.00 Robert Fergusson  12/21/14
$25.00 Robert Kennedy    12/21/14

$ 70.00 + $165.28 = $235.28

Balance of the account is now solidly in the black again: $235.28.

Thanks again and we can put the fund on hold again for the time being.

Happy Holidays to all.

Peace, Jim (|:{>

In 2015, I shipped 11 boxes to Soothsayr and Rangerhouse at an approximate cost of $22 per box. That comes to $242 or just about enough to bring the JVJ Postage Fund to ZERO. I'm not going to quibble over a few bucks here or there, but I just dropped $101+ on the next batch of books to Rangerhouse and would like to see the fund come back up to about $200 to cover that and the books here for Soothsayr's next lot.

Your support is appreciated.

Merci. (|:{>

Hi Gang,
JVJ has just sent out almost 300 more comics for scanning and sharing!
This used everything he had left in the JVJ Postage Fund.  Our thanks to everyone who helped last time.
But we need help to get it built up again with help from the CB+ members.

Please help us cover JVJ's postage costs.  He's let us scan over 3,500+ comics from his collection for sharing!
To see a list of what he has shared you can see it -

Donations of any kind are welcome via PayPal.com at orders@bpib.com

Our sincere thanks to all the donors out there that have kept CB+ and the JVJ Project running all these years!
