I think this might be the first appearance of Jet-Ace Logan.

Yes, that sounds right.  The British Guide doesn't list which issue he started in but the story reads like the introduction :D  Geoff Campion art?

Wikipedia says Campion drew the first Jet-Ace Logan and the rest of the Comet stories were by John Gillat. I have only read a couple of Logan adventures, and those in French, but I got the impression Logan was the strong hero type, not the airhead he seems to be here. Did he grow into his role or did they just change his character in midstream?

I always thought he grew into the role.  Certainly the stories in Thriller Picture Library starting around 1961, show a different character and even going back a bit in the pages of Comet, Logan is a fully-fledged space ace.  I'll have to gather up all the Comet issues available and have a read.
