Does anyone out there have any of these? I absolutely need them for research purposes (for my BH series, featuring Skyman). Doesn't have to be all of them, although if that were to happen, AWESOME. But as many as anyone can find.
I just need scans of the Skyman stories, not the whole issue.
I know someone out there must have some of these issues. Please, help a guy out. :)
-
Nobody? Well, that bites.
:(
-
Sorry BH, none have been scanned AFAIK.
-
Ya, sometimes one just has to hold out in the hope that someone who reads here might have what one needs. Hope you get the Spyman copies for you work. Hang in there.
Sometimes you get lucky.
Are ya feelin' lucky?
Well, are ya...
::)

I've got a copy of #82, BH,
Get one of the JVJ scanners (Geo, Jon the Scanner, Narfstar or OtherEric) to request it in their next round of books. Best I can do.
Peace, Jim (|:{>

I've got a fair number of them, but I can't remember how many off hand. Just guessing, I'd say I probably have half or a little more. I was working on a CD of them a few years ago to sell through my site. I'll check and let you know how many I have in the next few days. Scanning all of the Big Shot issues all at once would get tiring, but I should be able to scan the Skyman stories to make them available and act as placeholders until the full issues can be scanned.

Great to hear from you Eric.
Looking forward to anything you felt worth scanning.
:)

I have more than I thought:
#69 - Skyman story only
#70 - Skyman story only

#74 - Skyman story only

#80
#81 - Skyman story only
#82
#83
#84
#85
#86

Once I get these scanned and posted, then we just need 7 more:

Not bad...not bad at all.

Yes please. :) I need this story for research for my BH book. Anything you could scan would be great. All I need is the Skyman stories.
-
I am sad. :(
-
Eric is a busy guy BH.
Perhaps someday down the road he might get to these.
-
Yeah, I know. I was just being silly.

The Monster Society of Evil Serial in Captain Marvel Adventures has 25 parts. Is this the longest Golden Age Comic book Serial ever?
-
It certainly generally gets credit as the longest GA serial ever; but I think that it probably depends in part on what you actually consider a "serial". This thread started as a discussion of the "Skyman in Space" 26-parter, which would beat the Monster Society by one part. But I haven't seen the Skyman story/stories and don't know if it qualifies as a serial, or just happens to be a bunch of issues where the character goes to space. Even if it does count as a serial; the page count may be lower than the Monster Society story.
Luckily, we have the entire Monster Society serial on the site; it's in Captain Marvel Adventures 22-46. Some of the issues are fiche, however. (I know a lot of people dislike fiche; but as I've said before the distance from 1 to 10 in scan quality is not nearly as big as the distance from 0 to 1. Go Darkmark and the other fiche scanners!)
-
Thanks, Eric. I replace my own scans with paper ones when they become available. But having a fiche scan is better than having NO scan. ;-)
-
For what it's worth (which is thankfully not much, as long as the scanners are enjoying themselves), I agree. I'd much rather have even the worst of the fiche scans handy than wait years until someone finds a paper copy that's good enough to scan but not so good that it's too precious to scan.
Not that I'm unappreciative of the remarkable "cleaned up" fiche scans, or don't want people to keep looking for those paper copies, but the fact that some of this material is available at ALL is great to begin with. Anything past that...only to the extent that it's entertaining should it be a priority. Well, that, and how frequently you expect to reread it, since the muddier scans will give one a headache.
-
Have some of the Skyman issues been uploaded? The Monster Society of Evil is great so far.
-
Not yet. :(
-
I have a complete Big Shot #69. I'll try and scan it as soon as possible.
-
thanks crimson you will make bountyhounter happy
-
Yes, you will. One part is better then no parts. lol I'll keep my eyes open for it.
And, really, I only need the Skyman story. If you wanna scan the whole issue, awesome, but I'll be happy with just the one story.
Thanks.
-
Trying to upload Big Shot 69 right now. Hopefully it will be done soon.
Update - I added comic. Now I'm just waiting for approval. However I could not get it to go in the correct category, so maybe someone can move it out of unsorted files.
-
Looking forward to this CC.
You might consider a small test upload of say a page or two as a cbz to make sure you have the procedure figured out.
If you see 'CONFIRM' at the bottom of the page at the end click it. There is a visual tutorial for uploading linked in the FAQ.
Good luck!
-
Don't worry Crimson all first time uploads go into unsorted. When Yoc moves you to VIP status you will be able to put things in their proper place. Thanks for Big Shot and glad to welcome another scanner.
-
Thanks cc. That's one-part down, 25 to go. :)
-
Thanks guys. Glad to help.
-
I have a line on issues 80-84. Hopefully I'll be able to get em. This is actual copies I'm talking about, not scans. :)
-
well, now we really want you to get that new scanner! (or used, heck I see them at the Salvation Army all the time when I'm stuck there with Maw. :)
-
Well, just keep your fingers crossed I have the extra money this month. Credit card debt sucks! lol

BH, you buying that or would you like me too and you can reimburse me when you can. So do you have artists lined up for your project or are you doing artwork?
Found all Big Shots that are on eBay as of right now:

BH have you checked out my Sparky Watts #4? I have a partial Big Shot that I included. Based on the reference to Skyman's return so it must be close to #95

Actually, I found another auction that includes that issue that I'll probably be getting, so no need. And I have an artist working on the book. If I drew it myself, it would look like one of those comics that you used to make as a 8 yr old. Meaning, horrible. LOL Did you find the other thread where I posted a page from one of the stories?
And thanks for the Sparky Watts #4, narf. I'm downloading it right away. :)
-
No I didn't but will check. Glad you can get those books.
-
Still looking for these issues. Just thought I'd bump this.

Our sister site has some of these...not all complete though, but a few might be of use for you.

If you don't have an account there yet, go get one...it makes life easier when one or the other is on the fritz.

My Big Shot 83 is available here
-
I've come to the conclusion I'm never going to find all these. blah.
lol
I just bought Big Shot Comics #72 on ebay, so one down.
-
Look forward to the scans of 72
-
I still don't have access to a scanner. That's the problem. :(

Try setting something up with one of the scanners here who lives close to you to scan it for you.
That would work.

Wow, I can't believe how hard it is to track these stories down. I've been up one hill and down the other side, and I'm still pretty much where I was when I started this thread.
Anybody else had any luck?
-
Actually we had very few Big Shots now there are serveral. I have been able to fill a few holes. Big Shot is not usually one of the cheaper titles. A lot of the strip reprint books go cheaper but Big Shot had several originals like Skyman, The Face and Sparky Watts.
-
Oh wow, sorry for the necro post, but are these actually on the site now??? YES!!!
-
It is amazing the books that come here.
-
Well, I'm a happy guy now.
Ron Frantz and Mort Todd, the guys who did the Return of Skyman comic, are on facebook right now still claiming to own Skyman. I guess they've been causing a stink with Dynamite and now with Dark Horse for using the character. They still claim they bought the rights from the owner, but I have yet to see any evidence that they do, in fact, own the character. I'm pretty sure you can't own a public domain character. I'm trying to find out, but I'm not having any luck so far.
Ron Frantz, via facebook:
This is Ron Frantz here: I guess it is appropriate that I should address your question instead of Mort. First, let me say that simply because someone (anyone) might claim that certain comic book characters are PD does not make it so. In the case of Skyman and The Face, I base my claim of ownership on the fact that I purchased the rights in 1986 from the creator and original publisher, Mr. Vincent Sullivan. I have addressed this situation several times recently in Ditkomania and elsewhere. As you probably know, I published comics featuring the characters in 1987. I still have the cancelled checks and my original correspondence with Mr. Sullivan. I am represented by legal counsel and I am both willing an able to produce these documents in Federal Court if push should ever come to shove. Now, as to why I have "allowed" other publishers to use the characters in other publications, I have not. This has ordinarily been done without my knowledge or consent. I have most recently brought these matters to the attention of one particular publisher, who has been informed that I am prepared to pursue litigation if necessary. As you put it...I am not "trying to be a dick or anything," but it is simply a matter of necessity to protect my rights and legal ownership of the characters. By my way of thinking, this is only fitting and proper. I hope you (and others) will respect this. As the matter now stands, ACE Comics is the only publisher authorized to use the characters in comic books or any other media.

Had most of them and sold them last year (Sorry) as we are moving and I have t odrasticall yreduce the amount of comcis I own would love to see a scanned version so I could read it again
-
Skyman just appeared on Project Superpowers Herokillers #2s cover. I guess Dynamite still hasn't gotten the memo that Skyman isn't public domain? 😄
-
Or perhaps Dynamite paid the appropriate royalties...
