Title: Who's Who at www.bailsprojects.com
Post by: narfstar on January 11, 2009, 07:38:56 PM
I thought it might be a good idea to have a place to compile information to be available to update the site when that becomes possible.  A simple start is that Ed Smalle is listed at Stanmor but not for war. He signed a ship in Battle Cry #1. I invite posts here that we can compile for whomever takes over the site.

Hi Narf,
A good idea I'm sure JVJ will endorse but I thought I heard somewhere that Jerry's wife didn't want the site to be updated anymore.  I hope I heard wrong.  It might have been on the Timely-Atlas Yahoo group.  I'm not sure.

It's a great concept, Narf,
and if we ever want the accumulated data to end up in the WW, it probably should be implemented in a way that will be easy to input into a computer. So I'd suggest that each entry not be just a sentence with the data in it, but presented as one piece of information per line in a structure similar to what Jerry used.

What I used to send to Jerry were individual cards something like this

ALBRINI
EA   a    48    Teen
MA  p/a  49-51  Love

Later Jerry would also ask for the title of the book, so your entry for Smalle would have been:

SMALLED
ST   a   54    War (Battle Cry)

assuming that Battle Cry was done in 1954.

Whoever is going to implement the data (if ever) is going to want a consistent format and MAY be familiar with how Jerry did it. FWIW.

Also, I strongly feel that there should be a "vetting" committee. Jerry was a committee of one and had total control and was extremely knowledgeable. It will take a couple of people (at least) to bring an approximation of his skills and knowledge to the project.

ps. sorry for the delay in my responses. I've been fighting with my Internet Access and Wireless Network for almost two weeks.

Peace, Jim (|:{>

I think Jean handles all new info on the site. I can ask her to conatct you if you wish. I haven't heard from her in a while.

I have to run out and so don't have time to analyze this just yet, but I'd heavily suggest trying to mimic the format of their database as closely as possible and--probably--separate the fields with commas.  Hopefully, the format would match up to how Jerry did things, but if not, the back-end people will have a far easier time (and hence the data will be an easier "sell") if they can load the information directly.

Checking the website, I see this (which I list as much as a reminder to me to check it as for anybody else who wants to read):

http://bailsprojects.com/(S(4dbwhibsqfovqkigvqerb555))/about.html

The middle section has a complete rundown on the (single-table, which means it was probably derived from, and might be maintained in, a spreadsheet) database layout.  At the bottom, the acknowledgements (including our new member, Doc Boucher) reads as a likely jumping-off point for a contact list.  For example, anybody who finds Richard Hughes can presumably find out exactly the best way to store your information.

JC, Thanks for the "about" link.
Believe it or not, in all these years I've never read those pages. What humbles me is that after Hames Ware, I'm listed first in the acknowledgments. I never knew. What an incredible honor.

And you're absolutely right that we need comma-delimited data. Jerry had his own set of abbreviations for artist names and company names and I'm certain that I can dig up those old instruction sheets. So, Narf, your entry for Ed Smalle should read:

SMALLED, ST, a, 54, W, Battle Cry

And I'm  quite serious that we need a "vetting" committee to assure Jean Bails that we are only adding (or removing) proven data. The "about" link that JC mentions has a list of potential members:
Quote
Alberto Becattini, Steven Rowe, Ron Goulart, Craig Delich, Michael Barrier, Tim Barnes, Robin Snyder, Tim Stroup, Daniel Stevenson, R.C. Harvey, Bob Hughes, Bob Beerbohm, Mike Tiefenbacher, Michael Gilbert, Dr. Michael Vassallo

Whether any of them would be able or willing is a matter of concern, but we simply can't take it upon our individual selves to "record" new data.

BTW, narf, I really getting behind this idea of yours. Thanks for suggesting it.

Peace, Jim (|:{>

Yeah Richard kinda disaoppeared out on us, I sent him some e-mails a few months ago but no repsonse. I might try again.

Not sure if the site will be updated ever again, but I figured I?d share some of the information I?ve learned in my research done out of curiosity:

*Gordie Heiman* is a misreading of one of Woody Gelmans signatures:

https://www.comics.org/creator/13836/

Walter Davoren and Earl Da Voren are the same person:

https://www.comics.org/creator/13555/

Edwin Loughlins signatures were misread as *Edwin Laughlin*:

https://www.comics.org/creator/3900/

George Meyerriecks was spelled as *G. Meyeriecks*:

https://www.comics.org/creator/5021/

Walter Wingerter isnt a byline pen name:

https://www.comics.org/creator/13582/

Clark Williams is Witmer Williams middle name and last name and not simply a house name:

https://www.comics.org/creator/13820/

Howard Wyrauchs decidedly stylized signatures were misread as *W. Truett*:

https://www.comics.org/creator/13844/

Robert Teaney was misread as *R. Teanek*:

https://www.comics.org/creator/11653/

H. Cardwell isnt a byline of a pen name, as it belongs to Cardwell Higgins:

https://www.comics.org/creator/5363/

And comic book artist George Harrison may or may not be the same George Harrison who worked on Lucho of Peru:

From what I've heard the Who's Who won't be updated, but Dr. Bails' work is used with permission for the creators' records at the Grand Comics Database (https://www.comics.org), which Jerry Bails helped set-up.

Yeah, GCDs bios and the site in general definitely makes for a great extension of Whos Who.

Yep, said to have worked in comics from approximately 1944 to early 1950s and spent a lot of time living in Puerto Rico painting portraits of tourists. The walls of El Batey Bar on Calle Christo in Old San Juan are also said to be covered with Mabuchi?s
caricatures of the regulars, and did a portrait of Dionne Warwick as well.

Well, since some of us are still accumulating new and corrected Data, this may still be an apt thread to do that.
Putting Data all in one place so it can be referred to and available to transform into other formats is a good idea. So,
I'm curious about what use the info in this thread can currently be put to.

There was a post on January 12 - 2009 and then and then ElectricMaesto contributes something on March 8 2021. A 12 year gap.
It seems that Jerry Bails wife was reluctant to allow changes to the Data-base, and rather, leave it as a kind of memorial to him.
It also seems that Narf's post stimulated interest from some who were keen to continue to improve and update the database.
The posts don't indicate that anyone followed up and got a clear answer from Jean Bails. And in 11 years a lot of water has passed under the bridge.
With respect, is Jean still with us, and does anybody know the current situation re Dr Bail's Database?
What's also clear is that in that time a considerable amount of new data has come to light and that there are those ferreting it out and keen on updating and correcting. [And thanks ElectricMasetro in Particular.

Maybe, Narfstar, you might be able to bring us up to date. And does anybody see a way forward?

Cheers!

As Bails' was one of he founders of the Grand Comics Database there have, through the years, been discussions at the GCD Main discussion group https://groups.google.com/g/gcd-main about the Who's Who.

Unfortunately Google Group is a pain to search through (odd considering it's owned by a search engine), but there was, at least, one discussion about updating the Who's Who years ago.

It appears that Who?s Who mistakenly attributed Thomas J. Cooke (1923-1986) having illustrated some Sesame Street books, said to actually be illustrated by Thomas I. Cooke (1936-2014).

I had the same misconception for a long time, that the Tom Cooke who drew my kids' Sesame Street books was the Tom Cooke that drew the Drift Marlo newspaper strip. I couldn't figure out how he got from one project to the other. Answer: he didn't!

So let's see. We've got

Thomas J. "Drift Marlo" Cooke and Thomas I. "Sesame Street" Cooke

Charles A. (Chuck)  Winter, who co-created Liberty Belle and drew a lot of Atlas short stories; and Charles W. (also Chuck) Winter, who drew cartoony features for the likes of Novelty Press and Hillman; and Charles Allen (not Chuck) Winter, who painted magazine illustrations, murals and seascapes but didn't do comics.

Harry Anderson, who drew Lance O'Casey and others for Fawcett, then moved on to elaborately-drawn crime and suspense stories; and Harry Anderson, the Golden Age magazine illustrator who painted many pictures for Seventh-Day Adventist publications; and Harold Anderson, another Golden Age magazine illustrator who worked in the New Rochelle artist colony alongside Rockwell and Cornwell.

Bill Ward, the American artist famous for Torchy and his "girlie" cartoons; and Bill Ward, the British artist who drew for Thriller Picture Library and later for gay magazines.

Bill Sawyer, the British cartoonist who drew the Sandra newspaper strip; and Bill Sawyer, the British illustrator who painted many railway posters (these might be the same person; we're still trying to figure that out).

Can you think of any more?

Amazing Mystery Funnies #24 (Sep 1940)
Fantom of the Fair / cover / Bob Bugg [as Robug] (signed)
Bugg actually signed this "Robug40" to indicate the year (1940) after his name.

https://www.comics.org/issue/1026/

The cover is actually signed "Robin40" and is by Eddie Robbins (17 Jan 1919-24 Nov 1982).

Robbins signed a number of Centaur comics covers as "Robin40" including Fantoman #3 (Oct 1940) and Wham Comics #1 (Nov 1941).

Bob Butts & Ed Robbins later worked together on the Mike Hammer syndicated newspaper strip (1953-1954).
