Don't know if this has been brought up before, but it's always seemed weird to me that "Nancy" isn't public domain and "Fritzi Ritz" (where Nancy first appeared and later took over the strip, although Fritz Ritz continued as a Sunday-only) is. I guess United Features didn't feel like renewing Fritzi's copyright?

That is the key renewal. Morty Meekle became Winthrop so they did not renew Morty.

It is sort of the ultimate insult, that Fritzi Ritz, the original star of the strip (that became NANCY) was at one time apparently considered so outmoded and quaint a concept whose time had now passed (and thus held no future value to readers) that it would never ever be reprinted. Either that just an embarrassment in terms of politically-correct gender consciousness, that they'd rather forget and sweep under the rug. Now that it's too late, they may have reconsidered and found cause to regret having let the copyrights lapse. Or maybe not, who knows?
