Title: Dirk Gently
Post by: Andrew999 on May 26, 2021, 07:59:42 AM
I'm currently watching the British version of Dirk and also the American version in alternating episodes - both are available on YouTube - I'm sure there must be a connection between the two (sorry, in-joke for Dirk fans).

Personally, I prefer the British version but I'm guessing that might be to do with cultural bias.

What it has reminded me of is a game we used to play. You generate words at random - using something like this:

https://randomwordgenerator.com

and you have to combine them in a sentence or find connections between them. For example, I just generated 'throw' and 'thought'

That's an easy one - "As soon as the thought came to him, with an involuntary throw, the stone left his hand and broke the vicar's window."

Try it yourself - and when you feel confident, generate three or more words.

Here's my next effort - the words generated were crude, thanks and foundation.

And an answer might be: "He gave thanks that his crude efforts had at least provided a foundation for the future."

When you can do it with ten words, consider yourself a Companion of Honour to the Dirk Gently Foundation.

The IDW Dirk Gently comic books, by the way, are well worth a read - available from the usual outlets

Years ago I found a random Marxist screed generator.
It was hilarious.
A few months back I found a vid on Youtube of a young marxist spouting his drummed in screed by rote and it was indistinguishable from the garbage spouted by that word generator.

PS
Here is a more recent development with links to older versions.

Also forgot to add that I just found Dirk Gently on Youtube yesterday when looking up eps of Murder City.
Saw a few eps of Dirk Gently years ago, been meaning to find out more about the series.

Love the random word generator. This could become highly addictive!
I actually saw the pilot for the Brit Dirk Gently series about ten years ago, tucked away on PBS at about 1am one night. Couldn't believe what I was watching but I loved it! I'd read most of Adam's Hitchhiker stuff, but I was unaware of Dirk, so of course I had to read it. I watched the first season of the US series but couldn't find the second. Thanks for the tip about You Tube! Cheers, Bowers
