Oddly, it is not selling for as much as Superman #1.

Well, it sold, for more than $50,000... Not bad...

This stuff does happen, just not as frequently as it once did.  I used to own a comic shop in the south suburbs of Chicago.  Back in 1979, I got a call from a man from TInley Park, IL who wanted to check on the authenticity of a comic he got at a garage sale.  He brought in a Batman #1, in about good condition.  He bought a bunch of golden age at the garage sale for 25 cents each.  I never did discover what else he purchased.

This tale I know to be true because I held the book in my hands.
