Title: Filipino komiks translation project - Darna
Post by: nzumel on June 04, 2023, 04:47:03 AM
Now that I've translated the first Darna story (her origin), I'm going to try to translate the rest of the 1950s Darna that is available here, one episode at a time. Here's the next Darna story -- the birth of Valentina, Darna's first big foe:

Enjoy

Thanks again for translating these episodes. I've been quite pulled in by the eerie storyline.

You're welcome, @crashryan! Glad you're enjoying them. Sorry for the delay since the last one. Some family stuff going on.

But here's Episode 4: Valentina breaks free.

Episode 6: Goddess of Snakes

Note that for the next several episodes, the scans are not available here at CBP. I'm using the scans from Video48, which are linked to in the above post (and in the pdf of the translated episode).

I did two episodes this past weekend, to make up for the long gap between episodes 6 and 7.

Here's episode 8: The Plot Thickens

Episode 11: Valentina Amazes the Townspeople

https://multoghost.wordpress.com/2023/11/17/1950s-darna-valentina-amazes-the-townspeople/

Wow, I didn't realize it's been so long since my last post. My apologies. There will likely be another hiatus, because I do Christmas ghost stories at my blog for all of December, and I don't quite have time to do both projects at the same time. But I promise to get back to this in the New Year.

Starting up my translations again for the new year. Here's Episode 13: The Aftermath

In Episode 12, Valentina revealed her true self to the townspeople. As you can see in this episode, it didn't exactly go well.

There are two pages missing from this scan, but Simon Santos at Video48 provided a summary of the missing pages, which I translated and inserted into the issue. Enjoy!

Episode 14-15: Back to Edwardo

The scans for Episode 15 are missing, but I've provided a translation of Simon Santos's summary and added it to the end of this issue.

https://multoghost.wordpress.com/2024/01/14/1950s-darna-back-to-edwardo/

I know she's the villain in this comic, but I kinda feel sorry for Valentina right now.
Also, I promise, Darna FINALLY makes an appearance in Episode 16. Hurray!

So here we are, 16 episodes in, and we finally see Darna again! Or at least Narda, her alter-ego.

Episode 16: Darna Returns!

Episode 17 is a standalone story: Darna vs the Kapre. The kapre is a sort of tree-dwelling, cigar-smoking ogre of Filipino folklore.

https://multoghost.wordpress.com/2024/01/26/1950s-darna-darna-vs-the-kapre/

The post links to a PDF, as usual, but it also links to a CBZ of the story (on Dropbox). I do plan to put the whole saga together as a big CBZ, when I finish with it.

There's also a link to a documentary about the kapre, featuring brief appearances by Budjette Tan, the Filipino comic artist and creator of Trese, and other Filipino horror authors and directors.

Episode 18: Valentina Attacks

https://multoghost.wordpress.com/2024/01/31/1950s-darna-valentina-attacks/

I found this episode disturbingly violent for a 1950s-era comic. I knew what was going to happen, since I'm reading ahead relative to what I post, but working on it kinda put me in a dark place. Even pre-code E.C. comics, as graphic as the violence might be, is still fairly, well, cartoonish. This, for me, was not.

I'd be curious if other readers react the same way I did.

nzumel, Thank you for sharing these translations with us.  I first learned of Darna by way of Gerry Talaoc. He had shared online original art of the character. i look forward to reading and learning of Darna. Thank you again.

Hmmm, looks like I forgot to post when I finished Episode 22, so now I have two issues for you:

Episode 22: Edwardo Steps Up
https://multoghost.wordpress.com/2024/03/05/1950s-darna-edwardo-steps-up/

Episode 23: Darna on the Hunt
https://multoghost.wordpress.com/2024/03/17/1950s-darna-darna-on-the-hunt/

We're on the home stretch, and Episode 23 is the last of Simon Santos's higher-resolution scans. Starting with Episode 24, we'll be back to the scans that are here at CBP. Darna and Valentina will finally meet face to face!

So we are now at episode 24 out of 28, and our protagonist and antagonist finally meet each other!

https://multoghost.wordpress.com/2024/03/22/1950s-darna-darna-and-valentina-face-off/

As I mentioned last time, we are back to the episodes that are here on Comic Book Plus. This one happens to be the first one in the Darna of the 1950s compilation (https://comicbookplus.com/?dlid=64328&comicpage=&b=i) (the compilation is incomplete and out of order).

So if you want to read and enjoy the original, with all its lovely Nestor Redondo lettering (I assume it's his lettering), and use my translated pdf as a crib, now's your chance.

Episode 28: The Conclusion!

https://multoghost.wordpress.com/2024/04/14/1950s-darna-the-conclusion/

I hope you all enjoyed the story. I do plan to compile all the episodes together into a single CBZ, after I do some minor revisions on the first episode (Darna's origin). I'll post about that in a separate thread when I do it.

Cheers!

Thank you! It was an interesting and fun experience.

I've put all the episodes together into one file, and posted about it here:
