Title: My Pull List
Post by: narfstar on December 31, 2011, 02:55:43 PM
Seems ironic how little we post about the actual comics we read. Here is a forum for letting everyone know how you feel about your regulars. If you get them regularly you hopefully like something about them.

I just finished reading the HIT LIST AGENDA. This was a multi-mini-series event by Aspen. In 2009 Aspen put out Executive Assistant Iris and I liked the mini-series. This year they gave us 5 issues of Iris plus three other Executive Assistants in trilogies. I saved them up and read them in order.
I can't say it was great but it was a pretty good story. Aspen will be producing a v3 Iris and an ongoing Executive Assistant Assassins so I must not be the only one who like them. I will be getting both series.

Birds Of Prey is a very good read. I was disappointed to see Gail Simone leave the title and worried about the new 52. I really miss the old BoP but do like the new one.

Justice League International is another new 52 I continue to enjoy. I abandoned JLA after reading the first issue. I have read the others but did not like them especially the atypical Superman. JLI on the other hand has more of the 80's JLI feel.

Avengers Academy is my only Marvel pull and I still love it. Christos Gage rocks as a writer.

Near Death from Image is well worth checking out. A hitman has a near death experience that changes his life.

Samurai's Blood from Image was a six issue mini that I had pulled from the solicitations. Mistake. I should learn from experience to only pull after reading the first couple. I made the same mistake with Widow Warriors. You can guess I did not like it.

Red Spike from Image has been OK but it looks like the last issue may never come out.

FEMFORCE is a MUST get for anyone reading this. Now besides the always entertaining Femforce you get N.E.D.O.R. Agents. Taking the heroes from the classic GA and their offspring with great art by Will Meugniot. If you are not getting this call you LCS now.

Critter from Big Dog just ended her four issue run. Enjoyable old style superhero fun. Hope it comes back.
Legend of OZ: Wicked West also by Big Dog puts Dorothy on the Yellowbrick road in the old west. Excellent read I hope they get to finish it.

Orchid from Dark Horse is another one that I enjoy but is not holding up. I hope it picks back up.

John Carter books from Dynamite are starting to wear thin. I still enjoy them but too much of a good thing gets old. Same with their Green Hornet.
I still get the regular GH and Kato and continue to enjoy Kato more.

Star Trek/LSH not bad but I have to try to enjoy it on its merits because I hate alternate change the past/future stories.

Phoenix from Atlas has been just OK. Does anyone know if the Atlas Unified ever came out? It was on my list but I never got it.

MOONSTONE is hit and miss from Diamond. I may or may not get what I ask for. I have the first two Phases of the Moon but am not reading them until the third and final comes out if it comes out.

I guess I get more books that I thought. Please list your recommendations to get or avoid.

I have very few titles on standing order, which is what we have here and I'm certain we are talking about the same thing.  So, currently I have only Near Death (Image); All Star Western (DC); Sixth Gun (Oni), if there are any more; Victorian Undead (Wildstorm), again, if there are any more. Alter Ego, 'cos you can't be without it. Anything else that takes my fancy, I buy off the shelf.  I can't get involved with DC nowadays and Marvel let me down badly with Hawkeye.
What I do order (and this is something you can't order in advance) are the British newspaper strip reprints from ADCCC, in particular Buck Ryan; Paul Temple and as of my next order, the Harry Bishop version of Gunsmoke. I love these.
I was glad to see Near Death mentioned but Femforce, while I was a huge fan years ago, have a big collection of AC titles and recently followed your rec. on the title, left me feeling a bit underwhelmed.  (Aside, - I was once so keen on Femforce and AC when I was in the comic shop business that I managed to get 9 or 10 punters to add it to their standing orders).  I'm trying to say as nicely as possible that the art by Meugniot didn't appeal and I've never really enjoyed looking at his stuff.  I also dislike Synn, always have, and Tara is just one of the many jungle heroes that leave me cold.  I love the idea of the Nedor heroes but am I willing to spend the money?  I'd love to see AC and others be truly successful and I admire their sheer persistance.  As I write this I'm starting to think that I'll give it another try.
Sorry but I don't even recognise some of the titles mentioned and that's because shops here are cutting back hard on what they order, both in numbers and particular lines.  I really need to have a regular read at Previews and I don't often get the chance.

I get my info from the free Comic Shop News. I can send you a mediafire link to CSN so you can keep up with what is coming.

I make some good choices and some mistakes. I think you might like B. Clay Moore's Hawaiian Dick. He was offering sets for sale himself at a bargain. I can send you an email if you want to give them a try.

Not many of us chatting about what new(ish) comics we're reading but I don't mind boring you with my current comics of choice.  Saturday I visited my LCS and picked up my standing order, which included the latest issue of Near Death.  This is good, well fashioned entertainment and not a superhero in sight.
I'm saving All Star Western for an uninterrupted sit down with a cup of coffee and biccies.  Captain America looks so good and  - is that a Falcon I see on the cover? I have to leave Daredevil for a while till Dave in the comic shop finds me the inbetweenies or the tpb (I started at #1 a couple of weeks ago).  But the great find this time was Narfstar's recommendation, Hawaiian Dick, (Image). I got the tpb of series 1 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Private eye, Hawaii, 1953, noirish, weird goings on, great bad guy and so on.  I'll be treating myself to a 2nd. read very soon. And the 2nd. vol.

As Paw and I agree on Hawaiian Dick you might want to try out our other common title Near Death. Not the humor of HD but a really good non-superhero read. BTW: B.Clay is on a Yahoo forum I am on and was selling some HD. He may have some more left.  B. Clay Moore <bclaymoore@gmail.com>

Narf,

Thanks for the info.

I already checked and found out that my local library has Hawaiian Dick Vol 1 and my LCS has both  Vol 1 & 2.  I'll check into Near Death too to see what is available.

Here is the ones I currently have on pull, but that is going ot change here soon when the new Earth 2, World's Finest, and Dial H come out. I may forget a couple ...

JLA, of course. This is the origin story of how they met and came to face the threat of Darkseid together.

JLI, I like better then JLA but that could be because Booster Gold is in it. I find this time traveler wanna-be super hero from the future most fascinating.

Action Comics, with the sort of new beginning of Superman. Great art, too.

Batman: The Dark Knight, this one when the New 52 started out there was a lot of Batman titles to choose from and this one had the more traditional villains and I liked those so I went with it.

Batman & Robin, I also like Damian a lot so this is my second Bat title.

Batgirl, because I keep hoping Stephanie Brown will return somewhere. But the art is really good so I might stick with it.

DC Universe Presents, I thought Deadman was a boring character but he was presented in a interesting way and now we got a Challengers of the Unknown story arc and I like them so this title will stay on my list.

Blue Beetle, is my favorite co-star on the Batman B & tB cartoons. Dumb reason to buy a comic? Maybe, but it's the same reason I would buy Plastic Man, too. lol

Wonder Woman is finally going in a story arc I can get into with mythological characters and epic storylines. The art is different but you get used to it and it is not a traditional tights&capes title so I guess it works.

Superman, big blue always has a spot on my list.

Supergirl, little blue is always under-rated and is even more interesting I think as she frequently deals with Krypton stuff, at least lately. (Like, Candor shows up in her title more then Big Blue's)

Teen Titans, besides the awesome art this new story line has them out as fugitives and I wanna find out if they ever stop running from shadowy conspiracy groups.

Catwoman, At first I thought this was going to be like a continuation of the Gotham City Sirens title ... but it's not and I may drop it for one of the new ones like World's finest when it comes out. Too bad, artwork was pretty good.

Nightwing, because Dick Greyson is cooler then Bruce Wayne, lol

Red Hood & the Outlaws, doesn't seem to be going anywhere interesting so I may drop it after this arc and pick up Dial H or something instead. I wanted to see what they were doing with Starfire because I loved the old Teen titans but she is totally different since the reboot.

Green Lantern: New guardians, Kyle Rayner was my favorite lantern and this is his spotlight title. He hasn't changed much (thank gosh)

Justice League Dark, my wife loves reading supernatural and thriller comics so this is one we read together. lol

Aquaman, for some reason this was my most favorite New 52 book, the art is good and the writing is excellent. And it has Mera  ;D

Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E. is my gritty, boot to your face type comic. Sometimes a hero just has to be mean.

I've got two mini-series on my pull list Huntress, and My Greatest Adventure. If you're wondering about MGA look up Weird Worlds it is the sequel.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, totally re-done and still totally awesome.

Gladstone's School for World Conquerors, is about a school where kids learn to be good Evil Villains.

Funnies is Sergio Aragones's comic and it is funny. Loved his stuff since Mad Magazine and Groo comics.

I also collect Trade Paperbacks of the following characters and series whenever they come out: the Goon, Hellboy, Judge Dredd, and Fables. Mostly because their individual issue series are so sporadic with publication times.

Of course, I left out Birds of Prey. I was worried too when Gail was leaving the series. But this new group is pretty cool , too. I especially like Katana and Starling.

My only new 52 are JLI, BOP and TT but I too will probably give Dial H (I totally LOVED the original run), and Earth 2 WF. I was not impressed with the Challs story and I did not like the old Weird Worlds. I enjoyed Gladstones.
Title: Re: My Pull List
Post by: paw broon on February 22, 2012, 04:51:13 PM
Sorry folks but I can't get into the new 52, apart from All Star Western. And I don't like the Katana character. I was a big fan of Dial H for Hero when it started in House of Mystery - funny, quirky, silly and a wee bit different.  So, perhaps I will take a look.
But I think I'm going to add Fatale by Brubaker and Philips to my S.O.  I read the first 2 and, although it's a bit gory, there's something about the characters that intrigues me.  And then there is the mysterious, seemingly ageless, Josephine.
Did I say how good Captain America looks?  Only umpteen times, I think. There are occasions when Alan Davis' art is gorgeous.  Or is it just me?
As for tpb's, I have the 2nd. Hawaiian Dick on order and the third collection of The Sixth Gun - which should be on everyones must read list.

I invite those who would to give Saucer Country a try. It is different and it has me intrigued. Not completely sure where it is going so I will either love it or hate it when it concludes. Hopefully it will not be like lost and make me feel I had wasted hours of my life. In case you do not know it is about a Latina who is running for President with the baggage of having just been abducted by aliens.

It seems that my something liking means it will not make it  long as my taste seem not to get much other support. But I do like Legend of Oz: The Wicked West pretty good, Milar's Secret Service and Super Crooks, and Takio, and Avengers Academy. I got tired of Green Hornet and John Carter. One that I think many may want to try is John Bryne TRIO. Seems like good old  fun comics.

I currently have only four titles on my pick list, "The Shadow", "Rocketeer", "Zorro", and "Warriors of Mars". Picked up the last three and the first issue of "The Spider" today. "The Spider" was predictably not the pulp hero, but an updated version. Gory, not much in the way of characterization, dark and muddy art. May appeal to some, but I won't be buying any more . "Rocketeer" never has had a story line, but we usually get one or two well-drawn and well-written stories per issue  with the rest being cartoony crap. This issue has only one well-drawn but very uninteresting story, and double the cartoony crap. Definitely not worth the price. Haven't read the other two yet- the granddaughters are all out of school and I don't get a lot of  free time anymore. Cheers, Bowers

The differences between early Marvel and DC come out when comparing Essentials and Showcase.
I can read more in an Essential than a Showcase. Love the early DC stuff but only a little at a time. The age target comes out too much when read in lumps. I was a big fan of SA Martian Manhunter and War that Time Forgot but trying to read through them in Showcase I could not enjoy in quantity. While not a big Aquaman fan, I was able to read more of his. I had not trouble reading Essential Avengers of FF.

Teen Titans Ravagers story arc finished up. I finished DC's Hunger Games rip. Not very impressive or original. I am still enjoying Resident Alien. It just has an appeal because that is hard to explain. I read the first issue of Extermination and was not thrilled. I will give it at least one more issue. I have not read my Atlas Unified because I am afraid to start as I am afraid they may not end it like Moonstone did with Phases of the Mood. I read Amber Atoms on Comixology. It has four issue that I enjoyed. They started another story arc with a digital only issue five that I hope they continue. I think this may be a new wave of publishing. If series gets enough attention from digital sales they can resurrect it as digital only. Makes good sense. I also read two issue of First Daughter and want to see it finished. So everyone go buy Amber Atoms and First Daughter so they will make more  ;)

Takio continues to be a fun read.
Saucer Country and Legend of Oz Wicked West remain intriguing. I am not sure exactly where they are going but I am still along for the ride.
Resident Alien concluded a little anti-climactic but it was a worthwhile read and I look forward to the next story arc.
Victories and Extermination and Danger Club are darker superhero books that keep my interest.
Heroic Hero Within was another good old fashioned fun to read superhero comic.
Love and Capes new story arc is just as much fun as the others. This  is a heck of a comic.

Picked up a couple of my regular pulls, "The Shadow" and "Warriors of Mars". "Shadow" story is reaching it's climax- so far it's been pretty good. The Carter/ Jones tale is finished in "Warriors" and a new one is starting. Also picked up the first issue of the new "Thunda"- pretty so-so, but I really just bought it so I could have a paper copy of Frazetta's original story in the backup feature. The new "Zorro" should also be in this week- another series finishing up the story line- wonder if there will be a third series? Cheers, Bowers

I just read Dragon Age: Those who Speak. It was interesting but started in the middle of a bigger story. So I went to digital.darkhorse.com and there is a digital only prequel of six 99 cent issues. So there went six dollars  ::) But I did enjoy the series. I also highly recommend the free Dark Horse digital of Falling Skies. So now I have to get the earlier IDW series. There really is plenty of good reading out there and something for everyone. The IDW version is by Orson Scott Card. I should go to my LCS tomorrow to pick up last Wednesday's pulls.

Finally, someone gave "The Rocketeer" a real story line. The second series features a real villian and some references to past interactions between Cliff and "The Shadow". This could be pretty good. "Zorro" is reaching the end of the second series- still pretty good writing and art. Hope there will be more. "The Shadow" is also reaching the end of the current story. Looks like they're bringing in a new team for the next series. Sure hope they don't screw it up! Cheers, Bowers

Just picked up and read Shadow#6 and the Shadow annual. Both are pretty good - issue 6 ending the current story line. The annual was a complete story and was very well-written and drawn, nicely blending the pulp and horror genres. Rocketeer#3 "Cargo of Doom" was also on my list. Although I'm not a big fan of Samnee's artwork, the story is getting better with each issue- about time this mag had a real story line! Also picked up the first issue of IDW's adaptation of "A Fine and Private Place". Read the novel as a teen and found it hauntingly beautiful. The first issue was quite good- hope the rest are as well. Still waiting for the final Zorro and Warriors of Mars #5. Cheers, Bowers

With the recent cancellation of the excellent Near Death, I got so disgusted that I almost gave up.  Instead, I cancelled Fatale; Saucer Country (both were becoming difficult reads to me); Daredevil ( I just got fed up) so I'm left with The Activity; Mud Man; Sixth Gun, which I'm getting in tpb format; Rocketeer and it is getting better and that's about it. Can't get into most of those modern masked men comics.
Fortunately, probably as I know one of the librarians, my local library is stocking the Cinebook European G.N.'s and I'm currently reading SPOOKS (about to start vol. 2).

Near Death was good. I think you might want to give Clone a try based on your other likes. I add very few new books and thought this one was worth it. I wish I would have started Sixth Man at the beginning. Saucer Country only has a few issues left.

For a digital download site, am I the only one who buys digital? I just finished Hero: 9 to 5 from Markosia. I think they only do digital now. Digital comics are usually 1 or 2 dollars and often have first issues free. I will say that I enjoyed the four issue series Hero: 9-5 as a bit of fun. I do not appreciate some of the language but that is what people today think is needed to be real. Comics are not real so they do not need that reality. I also bough Adam Wreck graphic novel and it is off to a pretty good start but I have only read a few pages.

This forum is not used enough. I know I should post after each batch of books. I do not always read my books for awhile. I also have some I save until a story arc finishes. I have read John Byrne's latest comics
THE HIGH WAYS. So far it has been some very enjoyable hard science fiction. Nice to read a good adventure in space. I also have been reading the Executive Assistant books from Aspen. While I have enjoyed them my interest in waning and I may end after this story arc.

I got a graphic novel Donarr the Unyielding. Story was not bad but nothing special and I did not like the art. Too cluttered and not really pleasant to follow.

I am waaaay behind on reading my pulls. I did just read the last couple of issues of the 5 issue mini series Robyn Hood from Zenoscope. It is a violent book with extreme justice being served. If you do not mind that then you may want to pick up the trade. I liked it. The next incarnation of Zenoscope's Jungle Book will be coming out and I look forward to it. I did not get into the whole Zenoscope mythical universe but these stand alone minis have been good reading. These are tied into the Zeno universe but can be read alone. I will be starting Big Dog's ongoing Wicked West. I hope it is as interesting as the mini was.

"For a digital download site, am I the only one who buys digital?" narfstar
No. you're not alone.  You gave me the idea of Comixology and I've dipped a couple of toes in the water.  And now I've found Izneo, G.N.s abound.
Like you, I collect my comics from my lcs (not every week now)  but with everything else going on, it takes me a while to get round to them.  But I'm down to the few I listed above. And digital titles, well, I'm still looking for stuff that might appeal - and not too "real" or adult, either.   There's a comic mart next Sat. and I have a table. I will also buy some stuff but it will be older material.  I just seem to prefer it that way.
That's why I don't say much here as I often forget what I bought when and how long it took me to get around to them.
Mud Man was good fun yet again.  The Activity with the butterflies was well done military comics and a mystery at the end. Rocketeer is just good fun and I'm halfway through the current Sixth Gun collection which is dark, exciting, monstery and incredible bad guys.

This week I collected some comics from my lcs, incl. Alter Ego - 3D glasses included.  Now I've got a sore head.  Great articles and info.  But I don't see colours well and do have trouble with red, green, to be honest I know the colours are there, I just don't really care.  But, like 40% of males, I am a bit colour blind. So, perhaps that is another reason for 3D continuing to fail, apart from the stupid glasses. I am having real difficulty resolving many of the illos. in AE.  Most seem out of focus, hence the sair heid.
Apart from that, #4 of Comeback; Whistling Skull #3; Rocketeer, the new Hollywood story which I missed last time I was in.  Dave hadn't finished unpacking, so  good reason to go back soon for the rest, which should include Peter Panzerfaust and Black Beetle.

I used to get every issue of Alter Ego, up until around issue 90. But it got increasingly difficult to find it anywhere in the Vancouver area. I've managed to find some of the issues after that--and read others online. The 3D issue sounds like something unique (and worth getting in a hard copy), even though I also find 3D comics really hard to read. I never subscribed to A/E because their subscription rate for Canadians is ridiculous--but I may back order some of the issues I've missed.

In the last several years, I feel like comics buying and collecting has become an act of philanthropy. But I always thought that philanthropists were rich (Bruce Wayne was rich and he was described as a philanthropist in the comics I read when I was a kid). Since I'm not rich, it's hard to justify buying new comics as a philanthropic pursuit.

Nicely said and I couldn't agree more.  It's a habit with me and I enjoy going to the comic shop for a bit of patter and to listen to the young blokes going on about the minutiae of the latest X-Men or Avengers storyline. But despite being seriously jaded with and disillusioned by modern comics, I still find some titles which intrigue and entertain me but really, they are too expensive for what they give and prices for American comics here went up last month.  Fortunately, Dave at the lcs has held his prices for standing order customers but shelf prices have increased.

Since almost every comic is available bootleg in a week I do buy philanthropic and morally. If it is a comic that I would buy if it were not online then I should buy. I also do buy some digital and I contributed to the web comic Quantum Vibe because I like it. I recently subscribed to King Features and for $20 a year I get a daily email with all of their comics I want including some vintage. I really do not spend a lot on comics because it is only a few titles but it does add upl

I don't download pirated new comics.  But that's also because most don't interest me much and because of lack of physical space at home, I have started to use digital sites.  I said previously that reading on my Samsung tablet is comfortable and there is such a huge range of Euro G.N.s available - more and more now in English translations and why are none of you trying The Scorpion?  Did you know there is a Spanish language digital comic with new stories using the Nedor heroes? None of the above makes me a philanthropist, I just buy what I might enjoy.  Hedonism rears its head.
I can't thank you enough for the link to King Features.  I'm giving it a try and I'm pretty sure I will subscribe.  I have most of The Phantom material - and more, because I have lots of the original Scandinavian stories and lots of them are in English from the Frew Aus. comics.
I can't help but feel that $20 is a bargain for all that high class storytelling being the equivalent of about

Even though the comics are available pirated I am glad there are those who will still buy them. I figure that if I, and others, do not buy the comics then who would produce them for nothing. I can get the King comics on my phone but find email on my computer the best. I simply scroll down and get to read the days comics on my laptop. Rather than the google app just bring up your email on your tablet and scroll down. I have managed to collect a variety of Phantom reprints and comics but like reading them again. He remains one of my all time favorites. Gocomcs.com is another site and their is Creators. The three cover about all the syndicated comics out there. Gocomics has an interesting section called Sherpa. For a fee creators can put up their strips and see if there is enough interest to make it into syndication.

I have to agree with Jimm's recent observation. For a time, I would patronize my lcs mainly to help them stay in business. I'd buy reprints, back issues and hobby mags, but nothing really out of my comfort zone. After becoming active in this group, I found members like Narf, Paw, and others who were kind enough to share critiques of new titles and help me break out of some old habits. It's actually fun to head down to the lcs again. My picklist is down to only to only a few titles, so please keep the reviews coming, one and all! Cheers, Bowers

I am enjoying my King Features comics each day. I wonder about the fame of Krazy Kat. I have been reading and they just have not been funny at all. Anyone can go to KFS site and read them there for free and go back several months. I am interested in others opinions.

Great site/ sites, Narf. I see what you mean, although sample 5 did have a pretty good gag. I wonder if this was meant to be a somewhat more "philosophical" strip, kind of like "Pogo". Cheers, Bowers

I have no digital pull list yet. Hard copy is only Before Watchmen which has 1 book left, Masks, Black Beetle which has 2 issues left and whatever catches my fancy for the one off's. I am getting ready to buy some Moonstone books & TPB's @ a discount/volume from a local dealer to clear inventory (still a work in progress) but the digital bug hasn't bit me yet. Can't say I am "free" of the download syndrome though.

Bowers did you read Mystery Society a while back? Pretty good and it is available as GN. I mention it because there is a special issue coming out this week. I have not read it but it is on my pull list and I looked forward to each issue of the original run. A not fun series, but pretty interesting is Clones. I am also really enjoying John Byrne's The High Ways a good scifi story. Once again I recommend Quantum Vibe as some good scifi and its free. Krazy Kat is considered almost high art. I don't see it. I started Before Watchment but it did not catch my fancy. My verdict is still out on Masks. I read a little of Black Beetle and may give the series a try.

As I understand it, Krazy Kat lasted so long because it was William Randolph Hearst's favorite comic and since he owned the paper & the distribution syndicate... also his will apparently made provision for Krazy Kat to keep being printed after his death and publication continued until 1944 when George Harriman died.

I tried reading Quantum Vibe in its early days and while there was potential there I just felt it was all over the place in terms of tone and story.

Mystery Society was good and I'll look out for the special.  Black Beetle should be good but I've only read #0 or whatever it was numbered. Quantum Vibe has intrigued me but finding my way to the early stuff is taking me some time i don't really have.  Signed up for a free trial on DailyInk and I will subscribe and as for Krazy Kat, it's not that I find it particularly funny, it's more how well put together the strip looks and how surreal the whole is.  Don't know if I've explained that well.
Definitely unsure of Masks, to the extent I'm unsure whether to spend more money and time on it.
Did I mention there is a Spanish comic available digitally, with new stories featuring some of the Nedor heroes?
Digitally I'm about to buy the newish Fantomas G.N. and a couple of other B.D.s from Izneo.  And I ask again, why aren't any of you reading The Scorpion - it's great stuff and available in English.  A few free pages available at Izneo.

I like the Black Beetle. # 0, 1 & 2 have been quite good and it is suppose to only run 4 issues. Shame really. But perhaps best for the character. Lobster Johnson was ruined by continuing on instead of using a natural stopping point or two along the way that would have been a nice place to nicely tie every thing all up and stop. But if it sells run it into the ground eh?

I've so many things I have that I haven't gotten to yet comic and book wise let alone video and music wise. Just not enough time. I looked over that site Paw had mentioned and my heart melted at some of these books. Sigh. Have you seen this site yet Paw?

http://hqpoint.blogspot.com/2010/05/titulos-en-espanol-in-inglhis.html?zx=def67090be8319b0

It's a site called HQPoint its a rather nice site. As I traverse my way through Central and South America looking for comics and movies with Enmascadero's and Luchadors Y Luchadoras I ran across this site (and a few others as well <Smile>). I wish my Spanish reading skills were above the 3rd grade level. Now I am winding my way into the Eastern side of South America into Portuguese language territory.....Ugh. I dated a "greenhorn" many a decade ago and actually took a Portuguese language class in college...so maybe it will come back to me. I've already found a few Brazilian books but the books are not in PD land I do believe.

Anyways.....Digital comics will somehow worm itsway into my life I can see it now. I just have to figure out that few extra bucks to do it......stay healthy out there......

I still have a pull list at the lcs (which isn't so local, over an hour away).  I get mostly DCs with some indies and TwoMorrows mags.

Aquaman is simply the best it's ever been.  And I say that having read everything since about 1958 (whenever Aqualad and the updated origin appeared).

I get all the Green Lantern books except Red Lanterns.  I have no interest in blood or rage.

The Justice League has been VERY good.  The scripting of Hal, Barry, and Bats was well worth buying.  Sadly, Hal and Barry are out of the book, so I'm just buying it for Geoff Johns and Aquaman.  (I picked up the other JLA book just because of Hawkman).

I love Dynamite's Flash Gordon Zietgiest series.  And I like the new Star Wars series.

I've dumped all my Marvels.  I like the pre-80s stuff, but I'm always let down by modern.

I've tried three times to quit buying comics as a hobby, esp. new comics.  It just makes me too sad to do that. I always come back with a passion!  I just love buying them, reading them, and organizing them.  My life just isn't as good when I'm not in the hobby.

I never cared about signatures but at the LexCon in KY I got my Dr Strange #1 signed by Brunner (great guy) and my Longbow Hunters signed by Mike Grell.  Oh, and a 6-issue arc of Avengers (where the Masters of Evil did a beat down on Captain America) signed by Roger Stern.

Just picked up "Masks" 4 today. Finally we're getting some action. Athough not on my pull list, I picked up the last issue of "Joe Kubert Presents". Didn't buy the series for "The Redeemer" feature, although it wasn't bad. Mostly bought it to see the Sam Glanzman stories- he is one of my all-time favorites! Glad to see him do a few more in his semi-retirement. Kubert's "Spit" backup was also pretty good. Had absolutely no interest in "Angel and the Ape", so didn't bother reading those. I've also been buying IDW "Popeye" reprints of old Sagendorf stories- a quick read for both me and the grandaughters. Cheers, Bowers

I was really disappointed in My?tery Society Special. I really enjoyed the mini-series. The Special is a nothing book. It has horrible art and almost no story. It lacks any of the fun of the mini also.

Can I take you up on that offer, please Richard?

Right, pull list - or standing order if you're old-fashioned, like me.
I jumped on the bus last Thursday to visit my lcs only to find it in chaos as the order had just arrived, 2 days late because of the 2 public hols we had.  Usual Diamond mess in the boxes with titles spread over different boxes.  No rhyme nor reason to it.  See Diamond, see useless!
Eventually, I got the stuff from my folder.
Rocketeer - Hollywood Horror 2
Black Beetle 1& 2
Comeback 5 (how confusing is this story with all the time travel and re-setting of events?  But intriguing, none the less.)
Peter Panzerfaust 10
And I picked up East of West 1 to try. Rather a lot of gore and icky bits but I think I'll be back for #2
Against my better judgement, I picked up Miss Fury 1.  (umpteen alternate covers it seems)  Having read it, I don't really know what to say.  Apart from, the best bit about it was the Green Hornet sample in the back.

I don't know, I found Miss Fury # 1 to be "Ok" not great but not bad. Somewhere in the middle of it all. I did enjoy the Green Hornet back up story more fun. Mask's latest issue finally gets around to doing something. I won't go into great detail as to not spoil it for those folks who have not picked up this issue yet. I cannot say enough good things about the Black Beetle. The next issue (#3) comes out on the 10th and I am so looking forward to that issue.

My take on Masks is that Dynamite is trying to rewrite the Pulp and Golden Age to fit their version/vision with the characters that are at their disposal. Of course it is hard to do without DC Et Al and Marvel/Timely characters to use but that goes without saying that it would be an issue for any one company trying to build their own universe from scratch. I give them an applaud for trying anyways, if not succeeding. But I will stick around for the ride. Same goes for Miss Fury and the Green Hornet. Maybe I will pick up the Shadow too. The Spider GN wasn't much to write home about, I think a GA Spider would have been more fun. But who am I to nit pick.

Paw Broon has asked for Vol # 2 of International Crimefighters. However he may have a few of the movies already on the disk so I am offering him an alternative disk for International Crimefighers Vol # 3 (Which is not made yet and I am going to give him a variety of choices) or he can have Vol. # 2 and you can have my "planned" Vol. # 3. Sound ok? So hang tight. It takes me about 12 days to make one of these. They are one of a kind. Cannot be played on a computer and cannot be copied. I will start Vol. # 3 this weekend or as soon as I hear from Mr. Broon, or as soon as I give him his choices (which will be tonight when I get home). Either way you will end up with a disk of amazing crimefighters!

Big thanks to Richard for this. I can not say that I enjoyed National Kid or Champions of Justice. I have seen others of this type of movie the Japanese kiddy superhero and the wrestling heroes in English. So I did not find anything special about these.

Argo was in English and pretty darn cool. Masked Devil at least had subtitles and was also pretty good.
Black Rose had no subtitles but was still OK easy to understand action. I guess it boils down to my nature of liking things that are different. Since National Kid and Champions were not particularly different they were not my faves. The others however were worth watching.

You're quite welcome and thank you for the feedback. I try and mix content with language in mind to challenge as well as to enhance the experience and of course subtitles help a whole lot. Understandable that you might find the more juvenile japan/in Portuguese National Kid not to your liking especially if you can't understand the language, but as you said fast forward has it's advantages. I have to agree the first Champions Of Justice movie was rather disappointing, but the 2nd was far better. Argo of course was the highlight of the DVD with the Black Rose as the intrigue yet fun film and not too bad to follow. Thanks again. Glad you had fun with it.

The return? of King Cobra (or a version of).  How good is that?
The mag is available in newsagents here and I sincerely hope it succeeds.  I thoroughly enjoyed the read but some of you might not like the anthology format with 6 and 7 page episodes of each story. Good articles and reviews of G.N.s you might not be familiar with. I'm putting in an order for it.

Picked up "Masks"#5 and found it strangely unsatisfying. Great art, great premise, yet too many characters and not enough pages. By the time the action gets started, the issue ends! (And it took a darn long time before the action started in this series.) Been following "The Shadow" since issue 1 and have not been disappointed with the series overall. The "prequel", "Shadow Year One", is another matter. Wagner seems to think he must use some pretty bad language and very adult situations to spice up the story, but to me it's just a distraction. I'm not exactly offended, but I think it's just a gimmick to cover up some rather poor writing. Also grabbed the latest "Rocketeer". Still not sold on Bone's art, but it does seem to fit the storyline. I am absolutely enjoying all the "walk-ons" and references made in this bouncy tale. Wonder if any of the younger readers have any idea who some of these characters are? Anyway, some quite enjoyable writing! Also, don't forget Free Comic Book Day this Saturday- I read some previews and saw a "Prince Valiant" I really want, along with "Buck Rogers" and something called "Steam Engines of Oz". If you happen to be in Eastern Washington state, John at Merlyn's will be running this event Sunday as well. If you're in town for Bloomsday, stop in! Cheers, Bowers

Mask # 7

The Reveal is in. Can you guess?

In the end Dynamite (and somehow, someway, along with Marvel, I don't know how, to a lesser extent) is rewriting the Pulp Age and Golden Age their way. Excluding or using familiar(s) in a way that doesn't dispute ownership. It will be interesting to see how they get around not using the DC/Quality/Fawcett characters or will they have bad actors as stand ins? Can Dynamite rewrite over/on top to establish "It's" own continuity is as great and as important as DC's or even Marvels? (Although I see a crossover event coming between Dynamite's Superpowers world and the present Marvel one, or the Timely Universe Vs. The Masks Universe). Read and lets chat.

Masks # 7

Or....

What's missing in the Dynamite universe? In the Pulp world I'd say first off Doc Savage. Then of course the Avenger. What else does Dynamite lack? Media exposure. Marvel now owned by Disney Worldwide has such deep pockets. Perhaps they can't touch the icons but the Dynamite Character LLC characters would be prime material now, and that's quite a group, Project Superpowers showed that. Just a thought. Once # 8 is out let's chat.

Picked up my usuals plus a couple new ones. Enjoying the new "Shadow" storyline and was also glad to see the reveal in "Masks". Is the next issue the last? (Saw "to be concluded" in the bottom of the last panel) Or is it just the last of this storyline- any guesses? I've really been liking the new "Green Hornet" series much better than the previous attempt. Better writing, art, and feel for the character. Also picked up "Black Beetle" 3, new to me. Could never find any of the previous issues, maybe I'll have to order them or buy them online. Bought  the first issue of "The Black Bat" but the art was muddy and the story just didn't grab my attention, so I never finished it. I'll try again later to give it a fair chance. Cheers, Bowers

Started my readings today. I have been saving story arcs to read at once. I plan on reading Whistling Skull next. I just read Masks 3-7 and was disapointed. What happened to all of Green Lama's powers? He was extremely useless. I was not happy with his inclusion as I would prefer all relatively non-powered heroes. But I did not understand why he was used without any real power. The series was very predictable especially the big reveal of the villains identity. The only thing I really enjoyed about it was The Shadow. That and the praise of others makes me consider picking up the series. I hope Whistling Skull is better.

Picked up Masks 8 and The Shadow 14. Really like Shadow's writing. The last two storylines have been quite good. Enjoyed the Masks conclusion- plenty of action. If there is another series, maybe the action can occur sooner, now that the crew and their credos have all been introduced. Still haven't found Green Hornet 3, Black Beetle 4 or the Shadow/ Green Hornet team-up. Cheers, Bowers

Masks # 8 A death in the family? Got Shadow 14 last week with Black Beetle 4 with the promise of a new BB mini in the Fall of '13. Shadow Graphic Comp (First issues) was out but I didn't have the $20 to purchase it....too broke from ebay....but its waiting for me on my self @ the store. Still liking Miss Fury & Black Bat is interesting. Shadow/Green Hornet is suppose to be next week I think and the Owl is on his way too. That is all I can think of off the top of my little noggen. Ciao y'all.

Picked up Shadow 15, Green Hornet 3, and Dark Nights 1. Enjoyed them all, especially Dark Nights. Very good writing by Uslan- you can tell he actually researched the characters. His historical footnotes were also an interesting plus. Can't wait for issue 2. Ordered Owl 1, should be reading it soon. Cheers, Bowers

Bandette 5 is out. I bought it but have not read it yet. But darn when I went to Comixlolgy to get it I had to look around and bought some other books. Some 99 cent first issues. Planet of Women was a pretty good read but I was not too impressed with the art. It is sci fi with a sentient ape and a man crash landing on a planet run by women.

Owl is Dynamite and Bandette is by Monkeybrain. Bandette is currently digital only. I would guess it will eventually be a graphic novel. Others here read it also.

I was just joking about it being FH.

But the other day I was reading "Me to Your Leader Take" by Richard Ellington, in ALL IN COLOR FOR A DIME. And your plot synopsis of Planet of Women made me think of all the 'science fiction' stories published by Fiction House that Ellington describes with such glee.

I forgot to report that Bandette #5 was available.  I still haven't read it and I'm back in my bad habit of leaving somethin good as long as I can on the grounds that, If I start it, it'll all too soon be finished.  Sad  :-[
I also bought the 2nd collection of Atomic Robo, as I enjoyed the first tpb.  I'll try to get up to Stirling tomorrow to Banjaxx Comics for a wee browse but the bloke's coming to fix my handrail so I have to hang on till he's finished.
I have been exercising my credit card on Izneo and I'm currently reading La Grande Menace by Jacques Martin, a book I've always fancied since way back:-

I tried Batman 66 and realise I got about 2/3's of the way through it and dozed off.  Haven't gone back to it yet.  I also bought Ghosted #1 to try and enjoyed it along with Mass Effect #1 and this one I'll need to see how it goes.  Best buy was Rocketeer/Spirit.  As I'm way behind, I only got Black Beetle 4 this visit and haven't read it yet.  Also need to catch up on the last 2 issues of Peter Panzerfaust. I placed Captain Midnight and Brain Boy on my standing order.

Picked up some pretty good stuff this week. Finally got a copy of "The Owl" and really enjoyed it. Yes, guys, Owl Girl is hot! Liked the "Capt. Midnight" premiere issue- some good possibilities here. "Rocketeer and Spirit" was wonderful, with two smart-ass characters playing quite well off each other. I had some concerns that the Spirit's character wouldn't be properly handled, but Waid nailed it! "Black Beetle" 4 was a treat. Also picked up "Half Past Danger" 3 and was pleasantly surprised- you get dinosaurs, Nazis, and a hot chick in black tights. What's not to like? This was my first issue, so I guess I'll have to find the first two. Waiting for "King's Watch" and a pulpy air-pirate title called "Wild Blue Yonder". Cheers, Bowers

Yes Captain Midnight Zero issue was well handled too. And I am waiting for issue # 2 of the Owl to see if they come up with a second strong issue. If all the reboots were handled so well Dynamite would be a great company but alas.....

Reboots are , indeed, pretty tricky. Removing a character from his original venue and transplanting him to a totally new world takes some very strong writing to make it even somewhat plausible. As we all have seen, more often than not, it fails. Capt. Midnight seems to have taken it in stride and is ready for action. This is definitely being true to his character. The Owl appears to be more perplexed by the dehumanization he sees in society and some of it's institutions, yet he still clings to his inner core of goodness and wants to help others. He can still remember why he chose to become a hero. Two different presentations but, so far, they both look like winners. Cheers, Bowers

Black Bat # 4 probably the weakest issue so far in the series. A weeping tissue issue!

The Owl # 2 the Origin of Owl Girl II. So Soon? Sigh.....

The Shadow # 16 Can't say that I am loving the Light story line so far. Anyone else?

Pull List for week of August 16th:

IDW Thunder Agents # 1 (Ordway cover) Liked the intro story line but hated the new costumes.
Dynamites Dark Nights # 2 Yawn.
Vertigo's Astro City # 3 Why does DC have this as a Vertigo book is beyond me. The usual high standards for this book. Get with it DC. Make this part of one of the DC 52 Earths. No?

That's it for me this week.

My Pull List for the last two weeks:

Shadow Year 1 # 5 Matt Wagner Cover loved it.

The Owl # 3 I think this is a mini series, not much else to say.

Black Bat 5 Picks up some steam with this issue but the ending leads one to believe this may too be a limited series.

Green Hornet # 5 Green Hornet & Kato kiss and make up. Sigh.....

Miss Fury # 5 All is revealed....or is it? Is this another mini/limited series? The way Dynamite is shaping these up it looks that way.

CODENAME: Action # 1 Give this one 5 stars for a # 1. Captain Action as a secret agent. This one ties into Project Super Powers, Has pulp ties with a certain pulp legend in the "Intellegence Service", The first American Crusader Clone appears and you get Black Venus too! What more do you want? It's enough to take a look I think. I loved it! Can't you tell?

Lobster Johnson - A Scent of Lotus Part 2 / I don't know why I stopped reading or following this book. I went and picked up the rest of Lobster that I didn't have and enjoyed what I'd missed.

Captain Midnight # 2 Bang! Wow! Yep # 2 as good as # 1 or better.

Tom Strong And the Planet of Peril # 2......Strange just got stranger. Loved every page of this book. What's with you DC? This is NOT a Vertigo book......it's an Earth # (Pick a number) all their own. How hard is that? Anyways.....

All n all a great two weeks. And....It made me realize what started off with just buying the Watchmen Mini's has now turned into a full blown weekly  buy. I haven't stopped to count how many books now but Codename:ACTION # 1 has now added to the list.

As usual I am behind on my reading. Black Bat has been a pretty good read. I often prefer mini-series. I like when they have a story to tell an tell it. To often with a continuing series they keep going even if they have run out of story.  The Owl already seems to be getting old to me. Not sure how long I will stick with it. I have to read Codename Action and Captain Midnight but haven't yet. I have read The Critter Annual by Big Dog Ink. It was pretty good and I recommend it as well as the series.

I should be keeing up more with this section. So, with that in mind, I was at my lcs last week and picked up Brain Boy#1; Cap. Midnight 1 & 2; Codename Action#1; Collider#1; East of West#5; Suicide Risk 4&5.
Reading the "new" Brain boy was a strange experience as I had bought the Dell BB #3&4 at last weekends mart and read them straight away. So, reading the current incarnation so soon after, I was struck by the adult nature and higher level of violence.  Didn't stop me thoroughly enjoying it though.  The other Dark Horse title, Cap. Midnight was good fun and I think it will become a favourite.
Codename Action was slightly disappointing, in that Dynamite way.  In as much as there seemed a lot of "fill" to get anywhere. All very James Bond. But I am a bit biased against the company.  I'll check out the next issue.
Suicide Risk wont be everyone's best buy but it intrigues me and I thought #5 was excellent.
Collider is the one that has had to change it's title, so I couldn't pick up #2 and Dave at the lcs is keeping #3 for me till the re-order of #2 comes in.  The story seems quite novel.

Captain Midnight was just OK I am going to give it some time.

This Weeks pull List +

Captain Midnight # 3 - The hits jut keep on coming! Fury not so Furious?
Thunder Agents # 2 - Not as good as 1, JMO. Some flashbacks and what is with the art?
The Shadow Annual 2013 loved the ending.....getting there well...not so much. But the Art was well done.
Miss Fury # 6 _ I love this character so much but this issue artwise is terrible. Perhaps the story does move it along into the next direction, but I think the wrong one.
Tom Strong # 3 Already halfway through this Mini series and nothing....sure millions dead. Red plague brought back by Captain Future (Man that guy has no respect).Still looling for Doc Strong/Strange. Sigh.....
Catalyst Comix # 3 Yes I support this one, don't know quite why but I'll hang for awhile on this one.
Jupiter's Legacy # 3 Er' Yep gets a bit grim the only way Millar and Quietly can do. I'm Ashamed.

Back Issue Bin: Bought most of the DC First Wave With the Batman Doc Savage and the Spirit. Loved it! Too bad it was with the wrong company. Batman could've been written out/substituted by someone else <leave it a fan choice I won't go into it> I am sure.

I finally read the Executive Extinction story arc. Aspen did not put out Executive Assistant Iris 4 and 5 on time to sync with the Assassins so I had to wait for Iris. It was OK. Not great but worth the read.

Clone is pretty intense but has me sticking with it.

I liked Thunder Agents 2 and think it has kept some of the flavor of the original.

I do not evaluate the art as I do not pay that much attention to it, only horrible or fantastic.

Well this subject sure went dead.

I'm still for it though. Got the usual Dynamite/Dark Horse/IDW stuff and odd-ball books, a quickie rundown:

Dynamite - Now I know a lot of people here hate this company and the way they do business, but you don't become the # 3 universe / comic book company without some rough spots and some marketing ploys, that said.....

Doc Savage, Turok, Magnus, Solar Man of the Atom and on and on, the titles and properties roll in and on. What can you say or do? These guys have some of the greatest properties on the planet. Do they know what to do with them? Perhaps not. Maybe one day. But hey give them credit for what they've done so far. Can you say the same for the "Big 2"? Maybe you can't see a difference but I'm intrigued by this company, for now.

Dark Horse - Use to buy a bunch of their titles. Ghost, X, and a bunch of their other books, then one day the were all cancelled. Hmmm. Now some years later X came back, A book called Catalyst came out (limited series though) comprising the rest or most of the rest of their super hero stuff, and now Ghost is back. Didn't buy X, won't buy Ghost, but did buy Catalyst (for the reason it IS a limited series) because I don't trust these guys!. Case in point. Captain Midnight, I had a fear that this would go badly in so many ways. Surprisingly for the most part it has been a great book, but (and you knew there was one), then DH introduced their version of Skyman as a villain (ok maybe he isn't in some eyes a villain) then or rather nw they are turning him into a racial stereotype with a "new and improved" costume and labeling him as a Super Patriot the Skyman # 1 in 1/14 release. If that wasn't bad enough we're told in issue # 6 of Captain Midnight that the good Captain is due for a costume "upgrade" in issue # 9. Really? See? Can't trust them to respect tradition. If you are going to change something change it for the better not just to Modernize or to "update" or to racially please the pubic. Why is this so important to do? It was the original concept that drew me and I suspect others to the book to begin with. Right? no? You tell me.

IDW - well this is a really fun company with a bunch of fun tiitles. Get any one of them I am sure you will enjoy them.

That is it for me for now. A family tragedy and a long overdue computer upgrade is going to take me offline at home (but not at work :-)) probably for the rest of this year at least so to all of you Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!

Sorry about the tragedy. Did you read the new Doc Savage? I have not but the cover makes me hopeful. I liked the Ardden version of the GK comics and was sad they did not make it. I hope that Dynamite does not screw them up. I will give them a try even though they are dynamite. I liked their John Carter stuff until they started flooding the market. I quickly loose interest in a title that does that.

Well it is not what you would expect. It is a very low key story. The cover is not what you will find inside. Instead what you will find is more of a story you would expect in a Doc Savage comic in the early S&S days of the 1940's prior to the good Doc finding the Ruby Helmet. Still it was an entertaining story and a nice quiet intro to the cast. It is after all a limited series so lets hope it doesn't blow the character up.

Well, I'm going to be absolutely honest with all of you.  First, it may reflect my age - I'm 72.42 years young.  Comics were always in my house even after my marriage.  In the 1970s, I bought an average of $250.00 US of comic books monthly.  I admired the people who produced them.  After the Marvel Secret War and DC Crisis series, I started dropping titles left and right.  I would have preferred generations of characters like were shown in DCs Infinity Inc starring the second generation of kids from Justice Society families.  After DCs Time Zero series, I gave up new comics all together.  I still check out a few new books when I visit my 40+ son and haven't seen a new comic that got me interested enough to read two in a row.  I still find more joy reading stuff from the 1940s to about 1985, so this site is pretty good for me.  I'm pretty picky and wish I could find scans of all the Classics illustrated JES series and the one Italian issue that came out in the early 1950s as well as related and similar series - In 1949 there was a twelve issue run of a series called A CLASSIC IN PICTURES
that I wish someone could post for us.  Thanks for letting me let of a few odd thoughts.

Don't know if we have had his conversation previously but CI jes facsimiles are available here,
www.classiccomicstore.com/stock.asp?SeriesID=26
My pal, Wee John, collects these and has almost completed the set.
While not as old as you, I have been having the same sort of thoughts re. new comics over the last few years and, like you, comics were in my house even after my marriage.  Just before New Year I cancelled my standing order at my lcs.  I think the final straw was the Cap. Midnight/Skyman nonsense. The odd newer comic thaf tickles my fancy I will buy electronically.
I could be wrong here but I have read that the vast majority of CI are now p.d. so, while I cannot recommend it, I can say that the run of American issues is available on c.d. on a number of reasonably reputable sites.

I was slightly concerned about posting that and, sure enough, the place where I read the info. turns out to be talking about the original books/texts on which the C.I. series were based.  The JES link, however is legit., as that company has the rights to produce the facsimile books. I read a few of them when I last visited my pal and they are good quality facsimiles, if a bit expensive but now and then there is a sale.  Worthwhile looking out for if you are a collector.

I Realize we have spoken about CIs before.  A Through search needs to be made.  The first 12 issues of CI were 68 pages long, then nos13-44 were 60 pages followed by 52
page issues.  After the war, reprints of the 60 pages were re-edited to 52 pages by removing pages or by removing panels and moving the others to equalize the size of pages.  In the early 1950s, No. 13 DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE was totally replaced with new adaptations and art.  By the early 1960s about 30 issues were completely redone.  Among these were the first 12 68-pg issues.  Gilberton sold their rights in the 1960s and ceased publication.  Two new issues were were published in 1969, one of which was a reprint of a new British Issue.  Also the new art/adaption of TYPEE was never available in he US.  There were no US editions of 14 British issues or any of the JES series.

The cost of those facsimile issues of JES and Greek translation are out of my range, especially when you add shipping across 8 time zones from London to Washington state on the west coast. I do have several JES that I have translated using a free translation program on the net, but it's not the same.  I still have eight or ten to do the same to, but my typing is getting worse as arthritis sets into my hands.

So if anyone has any ideas for me and my CIs, let me know.

I stumbled upon this article,
Www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/comics/article/55023-trajectory-releases-a-classics-illustrated-comics-app.html#path/pw/by-topic/industry-news/comics/article/55023-trajectory-releases-a-classics-illustrated-comics-app.html
So I suppose it would be much cheaper to have digital editions but there only seem to be the regular American titles available in that format.
No jes, though.   While I'm not a collector of CI, I was intrigued to read your mention of an Italian edition.  As I had not heard of it before I had a wee look, but to no avail.  I can find no info. on it.
Sorry, not a lot of use to you.

I also am a CI and Jrs.  fan, but know little about their history. Didn't know about the page counts of the earlier editions- thanks for the info. I find it interesting to compare the artwork in early editions to that in the updated versions. Are any of the CIs or Jrs. in pd? And what is a "jes"? Cheers, Bowers

About the Italian CI, I believe it was 52 pages.  I downloaded a copy of the book it is based on but haven't gotten around to reading it.  The CI cover shows medieval knight on horseback in battle using his lance on someone on the ground.  I believe it is based on the career of a real soldier from the 1600s.

The other question asked was about JES.  JEDS is the abbreviation of JOINT EUROPEON SERIES.  Ten European countries continued doing new CI after the parent company, Gilberton Inc., ceased publication in 1962.  The UK dropped out of the group a while latter. JES issues continued into the 1970s before they ceased publication.  There were two new Special Issues published in Europe - "World War I" at 100 pages and "The United Nations" at 68 pages.  In the US, the latter never went on the newstands but were sold at the UN building in New York (I've never met anyone who remembered ever see in it otherwise).  Because of it's smaller size than the normal Special Issues and because of the theme it would have fit the companion comic THE WORLD AROUND US or it's British reprint series WORLD ILLUSTRATED.

You will be aware of this but, for those who might be following this conversation, in the U.K. there was also a set of New European C.I. titles called Double Duos published by Top Sellers (who also published pocket libraries featuring European reprints of different genres) and these were B&W, digest size comics with two 32 page stories per issue, in the early 1970's.  And despite having a large collection of pocket library comics, I have never seen one of these C.I. comics. :o

Is anyone else reading the new Gold Key from Dynamite? I did not like Turok from the first issue and had no desire to give it a chance. After 2 issues of Magnus I am still in. I liked them enough and am interested on seeing where it goes. The same after only one issue of Solar I will try the next. Not sure if they will keep me interested without turning me off but so far I am hopeful.

This thread is not used enough. We need to share more of our nonMarvel/DC recommendations. I say that after reading the first five issues of Super Zero. I so thoroughly enjoyed it so that I had to recommend it. The first two issues of The Fix have been interesting. It is OK not as close to as good as Super Zero. I have read the first issues of Henchgirl and Ultra Cat both of which have been OK.

Not trying to give offense, but the idea of a "pull list" is anathema to me. If you called it something else like "what titles do you follow?" that would probably sit better with me. But I never liked the idea that when I used to go in my LCS on a Wednesday there'd be some haggared guy in the shop pulling comics for the regular customers, before they were put out for the great unwashed.

And I was a regular, but I didn't like having someone select out the copies I was going to get. I liked to have that feeling from when I was eight years old, walking into Mrs. Ryan's drugstore with my sister on a Saturday morning and looking at all the comics, like Charlie Brown, surveying the beautiful display and then picking out those issues I would get. Always open to the notion that I might not buy a comic I had been getting or I might buy a comic I never had got before.

The times at my LCS when I did have to request a certain book in advance always made me horribly uncomfortable. It was such a weight to commit to buying those books. And when I did quit my LCS (for financial reasons), I had the awful experience where I was called up months later because they were holding a book for me, because it was something I would've bought and I had to tell them "No." I still feel tremendous guilt over that.

Hmmm

I guess I'm not hung up on all that stuff Jimmm.

I have a subscription (I think of it as a prescription) at two local shops:

and I frequent fairly often two others, Dayton OH is a good place to live for comic fans.

just about every visit I'll cherry pick things that catch my eye, I'm a big fan of one-shots and short (2-6 issue) series.

Bookery:

I used to have a large list but now it's only 3+ titles

All Wonder Woman titles (to me, one of DC's best Characters and series)

My daughter (19) likes Spider-Gwen and Walking Dead, but we wait until they come out in Trade Paperback rather than getting monthly issues.

She also likes Afterlife With Archie, which just resumed after a 2 yr hiatus

Jimmm I have to have a pull list to get any of my books. My shop is small and only gets extra copies of DC/Marvel and a few other more popular titles. Krac would not be able to get his books there without having them pulled.
