Title: Forum Appearance/Layout
Post by: Roygbiv666 on December 04, 2012, 02:08:00 PM
Hi

Is there any way to modify the layout a bit to make better use of space.

See this suggestion:

Obviously, the "A Big Welcome To" thing would have to be rotated/modified a bit, or the stuff could just be placed up on the main toolbar. I always start at unread posts.

It's just that when I load a page, the actual, you know, "content" starts far down the page, when it should be 'right there'.

Or maybe we have the option to turn off the Welcome thing, I find it convenient but obtrusive.

Just a thought.

Hi Roy,
Almost all of the layout is dictated by the SMF forum software makers.
They do have a lot user made 'mods' but I don't recall any of them doing what you are suggesting.

Well as usual Roy you make a good point! I am also not happy with it. The trouble is that "above the fold" (think of a newpaper folded ready for sale) is the most valuable real estate but there is just not enough of it! It's all just compromises.
I wrote the site to be viewable on 1024px width upwards. It looks nice on tablets. So I have no horizontal option.

I spent a bit of time yesterday and moved things up a fraction. Medium term I think I can steal a bit more from the bottom of the logo where the like buttons and copyright are. Make the logo a bit smaller and put them in that area. Probably get another 1/2 an inch. Anyway it is on my list on high medium. I have more important things I should be doing, but I feel a tinkering mood coming on! Trouble is time and getting it looking right on as many machines as possible, so a big makeover is not on the cards for quite a few months,

Yoc ... I think it is more theme related rather than a mod. I have been a bit drastic with my hacking around so our forum software is now as steam punk as I have made the download site :(

Good luck on it Mark.
With tablet taking off so much you might find other complaining about the opposite at some point.

btw, I'm seeing my IP buried behind the Comic Strips link when on the forum Home page but not here when typing a reply.

Hi Mark,
It's pretty odd.  I see it here on the forum when reading messages.
Here is a screen shot while using FireFox.

I checked at it says "logged" in the same spot while using Internet Explorer.

With Safari it looks the same as Yoc's picture Mark.

Many thanks chaps!

That should be fixed now. A case of "conflicting styles". It now appears where it should next to "report to moderator"
