Title: Re: Blue Beetle
Post by: Yoc on April 19, 2015, 09:00:01 PM
This is a very incomplete selection of Blue Beetle newspaper strips bought and scanned by our own Rangerhouse for sharing. These are from original source - The Boston Evening Transcript.
Sadly these were from just after Jack Kirby left the strip to be replace by Louis Cazaneuve.

JonTheScanner found the final strip from the East St Louis Journal (that's IL and not MO BTW) from Sep 27th 1940 in Newspaper Archives.

To read an excellent write-up on the strip be sure to check Christopher Irving's blog here -

And to read more on Fox's newspaper syndicate attempt try this link -

We would love to add more to this collection but PLEASE, nothing from either of Greg Theakston's COMIC STRIP KIRBY collections or any other modern reprints.

Meanwhile, enjoy this quick look at the rare Blue Beetle comic strip,

-Yoc, rangerhouse and JonTheScanner.

Despite what Greg may believe, his reprints do not have enough differences to be copyright. So if the original is PD then the reprints are PD.

An assertion I believe maybe to be true, But as my pockets are currently empty, discretion is the better part of valor :)

Greg has done a lot for our hobby.
His Kirby Newspaper strips books are still on Amazon and I'm not comfortable with potentially taking money out of his pockets.

Ah "Charles Nicholas," you certainly did get around. There are three name writer/artsts who used that pen name, according to Wikipedia: Chuck Cuidera (Charles Nicholas Cuidera); Jack Kirby (Jacob Kurtzberg); Charles Wojtkoski (Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski).

All three worked on Blue Beetle, at one time or another--and the latter (Wojtkoski, who is credited with creating Blue Beetle) seems to have used "Charles Nicholas" for much of his career--working as a penciller at Charlton in a team with Vince Alascia (inker) and Joe Gill (writer) for 23 years.

But the name was slapped on a lot of comics coming out of the Eisner-Iger shop, starting in the late '30s--so I expect the list of "Charles Nicholas" comics would be very long indeed. Has anyone ever tried to compile a comprehensive list of all those who went by the name of "Charles Nicholas?"
