The first trailer for the new [Shazam] Captain Marvel movie has been released. Given how popular the Captain and his brethren are on CB+ I thought I'd like to know what people think of it.

Personally I quite like it. The casting is good, the origin is played straight. Freddy is excellently done. It seems clear to me that they are positioning SHAZAM to be DC's teen answer to the recent Spiderman reboot. That's what DC should have done with the character in the first place. There are also hints that the character will eventually be meeting the Justice League. That will be one way to lighten up the franchise. We don't know yet how Sivana will be played but hey, Mark Strong can do no wrong by me. There will be those who don't like the changes, but hey unfortunately it is the 21st century. I see a renaissance in the characters future.

I've watched the trailer twice, and I think I like it.  Not sold yet.  The way Billy in his Cap form acted seemed a bit silly, like that bloke in the Night at the Museum films, or the way the hero acts in Pixels. Yes, I know Billy's just a kid.  I wonder if it's too slapstick.
As I have seen very few modern superhero films, and I haven't particularly enjoyed them, despite bits of them being quite entertaining, perhaps I'm not the best person to comment. By the way, I am really ignorant of many modern actors, so I'll have to look up Mark Strong.  Haven't a scooby who he is.
Last night, we watched a 1950, b&w British thriller, titled "High Treason":-

and found it much more entertaining and atmospheric than most modern American, overlong, emotions hanging out films that we see.
But, as a big, Big Red Cheese fan, I will watch Shazam.  At the Stirling Con on Sat. we were speculating on what villains would appear, will Freddy get to shout "Captain Marvel"? (He can't, really), how in heaven's name can they fit Mr. Mind in, will they deal with Billy shouting "Shazam" and nobody seeming to realise that wee boy is suddenly a big, big superhero? Made for some great patter and boffo laughs all round.

Oh, I agree with you about the current state of American Movies, not just superhero movies. I wait for many of them to appear on DVD or even on TV before watching them. Completely predictable and the dialogue is cringe-worthy and cliched and apparently written by and aimed at teenagers. We show our age. But we live in hope. The Black Panther was quite good and because it was a non-European superhero, did terrific business in non-western markets. Deservedly so, and I think, deliberately marketed that way. 
Mark Strong is one of the traditional breed of British Character actors who is totally reliable and is in everything but you usually don't register him. And if he's in something, you know its likely to be worth your time.

Good point on Freddy. Taking that further, considering the mindset of current American film, I dread what they might do with Mary.
And I would think that someone, drooling, has already written (in their head) the dialogue of the first meeting between SHAZAM and Batman.

Ehhh... mixed.

I like the color & brightness and the attempts at humor. Much different from the usual DC movie trailer.

But I couldn't help but compare it to the original origin story. (Apparently the movie is based upon the origin from DC Rerun... uh, Rebirth... Retcon... whatever they were calling it.)

Billy - originally a kid with a hard life who didn't let it get to him and worked hard to improve it (kind of like Americans back in the day) - movie version kinda grumpy, expects things to not work out, defeated.

The Big Red Cheese - originally a light-hearted adult - movie a dufus with a kid's mind.

The Wizard - originally a nice guy - movie a bit of a jerk with an attitude.

It could be a good, fun film, but I can't say I'm looking forward to it because too many of the changes feel wrong.

I avoid trailers and previews. I prefer to watch knowing less. I do like Zachary Levi from his role as Chuck.

I liked the original captain Marvel Film CM was a stone killer in that one. In one scene he threw a guy off a bridge straight down head first into the ground. In another scene in a garage he threw a truck engine and hit a guy in the head with it. No mercy from Captain Marvel.

What film is this? Excuse my ignorance again but I think the closest I remember Captain Marvel on screen was the old 1970s Kroft TV show that ran on Saturday mornings. Was the one you refer to like a movie serial (from the 1940s or 50s) or some such?

Anyways I took one look at the new "Shazam" trailer and threw up a little. Not only does it look like every other superhero movie (or TV show) being made but the cliche' attempts at humor just make me think this is the latest DC movie junk like Batman vs. Superman, Justice League etc.

No. I know all about ElektraWoman and Dyna-Girl as I hated that show (as a probably 6-8 year old bold back then). It is just that all of the Krofft shows came on between like 7:30 am and 10:30 am every Saturday  and I was mistakenly lumping Shazam (and Isis) in with those.

7:30 to 10:30 was pretty much Saturday morning prime time across the board for all three major networks. That's when all the NEW programming aired -- once you got to the 11:00am-12:00pm block it was reruns of past seasons' shows and things like The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show.

Fillmation produced quite a few live-action Saturday morning series, among them The Ghost Busters (the later Columbia Pictures blockbuster Ghostbusters had to purchase the rights to the title from Filmation), as well as Space Academy, Ark II, Jason of Star Command, Shazam! and The Secrets of Isis, and a few other Filmation shows like Fat Albert and The Kid Super Power Hour had short live-action segments between the animated cartoons. It was a way to ramp up their production even more (the were already going head-to-head with Hanna-Barbera for cartoon domination of Saturday mornings), and also compete with the Kroffts (although Kroffts' series seemed to be mostly skewed to the younger viewers and were more comedy or fantasy-oriented).
