Question about an award winning horror cover
« on: March 08, 2010, 07:37:34 PM »

Years ago I had a Horror Comic in late 60's or early 70's that had a really fantastic cover. I heard it had won an art award of some kind.
I can't remember the title of the comic at all.

The Cover art was a carousel with a skeleton slumped over in the saddle of a wooden horse. The main thing was the lighting effects with the reflections of carnival lights on the skull. Very detailed and realistic.

The story may have been based on Something Wicked This Way Comes. Not sure because I think that story involves a ferris wheel rather than a carousel.

Anyone remember this cover?

Rings a vague bell but after 40 year or so can't quite put my finger on it, my guess is one of the DC Title's of that time.

House of Mystery/Secrets, The Unexpected, The Witching Hour, one of those kind of books.

Might be an idea to check the cover gallerys over at Grand Comics Database and see what you can come up with.

Finally found it, House of Mystery 221, art by Bernie Wrightson.

If it didn't win an award it sure should have, a very memorable cover.

I was on coverbrowser.com a few hours ago and was looking over House of Mystery but I thought it was older so I didn't go that far. Glad you found it!
