Text Stories & Features
« on: March 22, 2010, 12:26:07 AM »

I was thinking about those text short stories and features frequent in the golden age of comics - they are fun reads, especially the ones with the comic heroes.

When did these stop becoming a regular feature?

I recall DC did some one page features on some of the characters and content in the Giants ("Secret Origins" features a one page text feature on Green Arrow and Speedy)

Not sure when the rules changed but they were required for second class postal permit. Had to have text page or two to be considered.

Yes, I believe the 2-text-pages rule (or whatever it was) got fulfilled by just putting letters pages in comics.

Are the text stories canon?  Do they belong in continuity?

'Tho that doesn't matter as much in the Golden Age.  The Blackhawks fought and killed Ghengis Khan...twice!

Some.  The 'Hawks had recurrent friends & foes, but most of the Military/Modern stuff are stand-alones.  For that matter ERB wasn't all that consistent in his writing, either, but he made himself a universe full of crossover characters and technologies.
