Does anyone knows this book?
« on: March 23, 2010, 05:59:04 PM »

Hello everyone,

I saw at my local book store a big book called: "classic children's comics - a toon book", selected and edited by art spiegelman & francoise mouly. by Abram's comicart

the book contains old comics from 1960 mostly, beautifly reprinted but not in a "clean"/"modern" way but in an "old"/antic" way.

the book is divided by chapters: fantasyland, talking animals, hey kids! and more.

most of the comics in it I assum are PD as I've seen then in the Downloadeble section but there are reprints of Lulu, Denis the menace, little Archie and even Donald Duck

http://www.amazon.com/TOON-Treasury-Classic-Childrens-Comics/dp/0810957302

if someone has this book I would loveto hear his opinion on it. I want to buy it for myself but not really sure as I dont know many of the comics inside and sevrel of them I already read from downloading from here so I'm not sure if its worth the 40$ if everything in the book is public domain

Some of the material you cite could not possibly be in the public domain. If you can afford it, buy the book. Spiegelman should be encouraged in any endeavor he undertakes.

I just search the download site for Little Lulu, Dennis the Menace, and Donald Duck -- I turned up nothing. And I know that I have never seen Little Archie anywhere on this site.

Making such statements that "most of the comics in it I assum are PD as I've seen then in the Downloadeble section but there are reprints of Lulu, Denis the menace, little Archie and even Donald Duck", with the implication that these titles are available at GAC, when they are not, and you offer no proof of them being here (because, again, they are not) is bewildering...and a bit annoying.

The Carlson Puzzle Fun in the book came from me. I was to have received a comp copy and all they sent was a few page promo book. The material in the book does not have to be public domain if they got permission to use it which is most likely the case. Or if they only use parts for review purposes

You could have specified that clearly -- because you have never seen the titles you referenced here -- the site does not need such headaches, I am sure you will agree.

Fans have been clamoring for Sugar and Spike for years but it falls on deaf DC ears. I think that during the Rugrats craze they could have been a big market success. DC did do several digests in the eighties that would be cheaper than trying to get the originals

I bought the book on Amazon, with a nice discount.

The longer Little Lulu story in it is one of the best!
Also love the Sugar and Spike.

I have long been a fan of Bob Bolling's Little Archie ADVENTURE stories -- the book has LA humor instead.

There's lotsa stuff by lotsa great comic book artists in the book.

I hope I'm not breaking a rule here by mentioning that MOST of the stuff in the book is available
Love and be Free,
Bob

I was surprised the first time I read a Little Archie story Bob. It was not what I expected at all and yes I liked it too. Little Lulu of course is some classic stuff. I got several Dell Giants once that included Lulu and to my surprise how good they were. Stanley's Thirteen Going on 18 another. As a public domain site we prefer not to promote non-pd sites as it may come back on us.

Many years ago I found a excellent condition comic book that looked to be a fairy tale with insects as the characters. The artwork was very nicely done. On reading it I found it to be one of the most disgusting pieces of pornography you could imagine. I threw it out, probably should have kept it though, since stuff like that probably has significant collector value to some.

I enjoyed the Little Archie adventure stories as a kid, but have never had much luck locating them again. Can you point us to issue titles and numbers that these appeared in? Thanks.

The Toon book is wonderful; I highly recommend it to anybody who likes this site.

I would dearly love Sugar & Spike reprints.  Even more than that I would like to see the never-published-in-the-USA stories finally made available.
