Charlie, Quite a few years ago, in a moment of madness or in one of my, fortunately infrequent, bouts of depression, I sold my 2000 ADs. There were many collections coming on to the market and somehow I never got around to buying them. There was also the problem of lack of space. My wife seems to think a house is for living in, as opposed to storing comics!!!
When I was about 14, my mum chucked out the few comics I had. Hence the reason I had to pay lots more years later to get back Marvelman, Ace Hart and loads of others. Reason she gave was that I was growing up and had to study and it was time to jettison all that kid's stuff.
narfstar, there is definately a culture gap here. In the U.K. we could read complete stories of M/M, Ace Hart and many more heroes in their weekly comics but most kids, I think, read weekly anthologies, both story papers and as they disappeared, comic papers. We didn't find it at all strange or frustrating to read 1,2,3,4 or 5 page installments each week. Same, by the way, for French, Spanish and Italian weeklies. In fact, I believe we were very eager not to miss the next issue and could't wait for the paper boy to deliver or the trip to the newsagent to pick it up. And as in the USA, there was such a spread of talent, good stories, excellent art (also a lot of old cobblers) that we didn't seem to notice the number of weeks it took to get through a story.
