POD Public Domain Reprints?
« on: September 10, 2010, 09:14:37 PM »

Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but since the files on this site are in the public domain and most seem to be of relatively high dpi.
Why isn't anyone cleaning them up and reprinting them somewhere like lulu.com.

I could see charging lulu.coms cost plus a slight markup for the trouble to clean the comic up.
Then we could have physical copies on decent paper.

Like I said maybe I'm missing something, would this just be considered bad form?

Actually the ppi of GAC jpegs doesn't translate into sufficient dpi for printing. Just take a page from any comic here and send it to your desktop printer. It's adequate but hardly great.

Which is not to stop you from opening each page of the .zip file and printing your own hardcopy. Go for it!

True, full sized comics might be a bit rough. But digest sized and recolored might be acceptable quality wise.

I've extracted a few cbz files myself and found the files to be mostly 150 - 200 dpi, a bit short of the 300 dpi typically required.

Question is, is there any reason beyond the technical not to try P.O.D. reprinting?

Someone was doing this on another site. Ticked me off that they would charge people $5.99 for a file we give away for free, but public domain is public domain.

the only thing stopping anyone is money. For the interest in these it would probably cost more to print them than they could be sold for. The unfortunate way it is

In actual fact, boog, the files on this site are NOT public domain. The SOURCE MATERIAL is public domain, but you can copyright YOUR scans with YOUR corrections and cleaning. Just like Bill Black, Greg Theakston and others do. You have the right, if you can prove that the scans and adjustments originated with you, to claim copyright infringement. You HAVE to register the modified scans with the LoC, of course, in order to even FILE a claim, but it is not accurate to say that these scans are pd.

I knew that, Jim -- and the instance I was speaking of involved files that I have strong suspicions originated from GAC and found their way being repackaged and sold for profit.

How on earth could you think I am oblivious to such things...you are older and wiser, but I am not a total blockhead.

Boy, today seems to be my day for insulting people. I'm sorry. I was surprised to read your "public domain is public domain" and didn't think much beyond that and read too much into it. I knew you knew better, but didn't factor that in. As I said elsewhere tonight. It's late, I was wrong, I'm sorry.

I don't think boox was actually insulted after all he admits to being a blockhead just not a total blockhead  ;D

If I remember past posts correctly cleaned up scans can not be copyrighted. Only if significant alterations were made. Restoring them to their original state would not count. Greg and Bill decolorize so that is significant. Also Greg claims some changes are slid into his scans that make them identifiable and altered enough to be copyright. Not sure if he has ever tested his claim in court. The scans on this site are intentionally released into the public domain so they can not be copyrighted after the fact.

I'm sure some of the less reputable "members" here have already thought of this or are already doing it. Selling the printed copies for a nice profit. "Hey, get a $500 golden age comic only $15!"
I'd like to believe that most of the members here are here for the same reason, sharing a common hobby, preserving the past, and joining together on the best forum around.

Oh, I'm a blockhead, just not a total one. Nothing to be sorry about. When I take over the world though, public domain will be public domain.

Hail To The Boog!!!  ;D ;D ;D

Well I must admit I've sold some of the scans here.  By and large they were my scans but not all of them.  I sold them for all of $2.50 covering postage and the CD and printing a color paper jacket for it.  That's a pretty good price for ~20-35 comics (depending on size of comic and scan).  I've also "sold" some CDs like that in return for someone scanning a few missing pages or even full issues is some comic run.

Well, no one would consider you to be on par with the infamous s***er, you know?  ;D  I am totally for access, but frown on the group that sells everything they can find online on their ***y store.

I think Narfstar was right. GAC reprints are not as good a seller as you might think. Occasionally you see a repackaged feature but never does it sell well enough to reprint a whole series. I bought the reprint of Pep Comics' The Shield (trade paperback) and loved it. But they only made that one book (so far).
