The interesting contributor to this issue is Moira Bertram, who sometimes worked under the pen-name 'Bert'. Moira was born in 1929 and studied portraiture while growing up. Her first comic, 'Jo and Her Magic Cloak', was published in the newspaper The Daily Mirror in January 1945 while she was still a teenager. Her art was bold and dynamic reflecting her more pure art background compared to the commercial art skills of many of her male colleagues. She worked with her sister, Kathleen, who assisted with the layouts and lettered the finished pages. After a period working for Frank Johnson, she started self-publishing as well as freelancing with a range of other comics publishers. She finished with comics in the 1950s. She also designed paperback covers. I can't see any information as to whether she is still alive.

Here's a couple of Moirs's book covers. They are both Carter Brown detective yarns.

Thanks for that. While I'd love to imagine Moira living a larger-than-life life as a retired Queen of Australian Comics in her 90s, chances are that would not be the case. I'll be looking for more of her work as I keep poking around in old Australian comics
