DC Drops Prices!
« on: October 08, 2010, 03:59:05 PM »

Our friends at Flashback Universe Blog examine the moves and implications behind DC's decision to drop cover prices.

Who knows, if JSA: All-Stars, the worse comic on earth, is suddenly cheaper, I might buy it just because?!!  ;D ;D ;D

I get few new books and admit to not looking at the price first. I have only a few books that I like enough to buy so I will pay the 3 or 4 dollars whichever the case may be. I won't buy crap just because it is cheaper. Yes I have considered JSA All Stars because it is a JSA book. Why is it so awful, as I have not read it?

Hackneyed plots, no real direction; purely an excuse to have a second book. I can send you the 8 or so issues I have if you want?

JSA: All-Stars is a war-crime against trees!!!

I had considered trying this title even though I don't buy much new DC stuff anymore (except Batman).  Thanks for the warning.....and the Pepsi I choked on almost laughing.  IT BURNS.  ;D

Thanks for the offer Boox but have enough books just taking up space. I have better things to read. I will say that I am very much enjoying DCU: Legacies. It is not perfect and is rushed but it has a quirkyness and informative nature that I have really enjoyed each issue. It is not the best narrative prose, but it just works for me.

Always love to hear you can get more comics for less money. It's hard to keep up with new ones as it is.

Well this will certainly help the pocketbook.

I have fairly consistently passed on buying $3.99-32 pg comics (Astro City being a notable exception).  Pretty much the only $3.99 comics I've bought have been those with extra pages giving me more bang for the buck.  Mainly this has caused me to pass on several mini-series that i would have otherwise given a chance.

RE: JSA All Stars.  Like Boox I'm a JSA nut and have been picking this one up but have been consistently disappointed.  I think that the initial idea of splitting the current JSA group into two titles was good as the regular JSA title had just become too cluttered with so many heroes they were practically tripping over each other.  Unfortunately, as Boox so well said, they just haven't come up with a clear path of what to do with the splinter group.
The Liberty Belle/Hourman backup story (although having more appealing art for me) has been dragging out it's initial storyline for way too long.  It's the sort of story they would have wrapped in one issue of a Silver Age title.
The title definitely needs a better vision of where they want to go with it.  Right now the book just seems like an afterthought.

Best

I like the format they use for the Justice League Unlimited title: each issue focuses on a couple heroes to the exclusion of the whole group. Like, you may see all the magician characters one issue but not Superman or Batman. The down side is if you really intensely like one guy you aren't going to see him or her every issue. The up side is you get to see a lot more of each hero over the whole series.

I thought this thread was the best place to post my most recent observation I made in a comic store. As some of you know I recently moved to a new town and there is a comic book and memorabilia shop down the road. It's called Vintage Stock and also carries video games and movies. They're a pawn shop/retail place with a mix of new and used.
So I'm strolling through with my best friend and MrsCharlie (both also comic fans) when I get to talking to the manager. We start to hit on the prices of comics and he points out the negatives of the price drop:
*Less expected revenue might discourage talent
*Price of "collectible" comics will go down.
He actually said (of the price drop by DC and Marvel) "Well if it becomes cheaper then everyone will buy them and they won't be worth as much."
Me: ???

I couldn't believe it. I told him I thought that the price drop was a good thing as it will get more readers and prolong the lifespan of titles over the years. And as far as talent goes that with Hollywood snapping up comics properties for their big budget movies now that a good writer will have to weigh that (becoming the next Frank Miller or screenwriter) versus leaving comics for "greener pastures".

I thought the collectible price of most new comics was already nil. I can pick up almost anything within the last 20 years in the quarter box.

Sounds more like a speculator than a comics fan. I wish comics were no more than $1 an issue -- imagine how many former fans could be won back and how many newbies could be brought in?!!!

People have to make a living, but imagine how many fewer fans there WILL BE if single issue prices begin "normalizing" at $4.99?  :-\  Sites like GAC-UK and DCM are invaluable for attracting established fans to the rich history of comics and for bringing in those newbies who are simply curious.

LoL, right!
And if the interest in the culture drops even further that won't help collectible pricing. It'll back itself into a smaller niche which even if the price goes up means you will have to work harder each year to make a sale.
