Indexing comics for the GCD
« on: May 17, 2008, 09:58:36 PM »

I would like to encourage everyone here to contribute to the Grand Comicbook Database.  I am an editor and board member there.  It is our goal to index every comic ever.  Maybe unobtainable but the more help the closer we can get.  Between the GCD at www.comics.org and this site I have been able to assist Roy Thomas several time with stuff for Alter Ego.  I can use the GCD to find a creator's credits and download the book here if available.  That is not possible if the book has not been indexed.  Thanks to Darwination's scans I was able to index Shocking Mysteries 55.  It had a signed George Peltz and the last story was almost surely Pete Morisi.  Now the info is available for researchers everywhere.  I know that most GA books were not signed but some where, or can be identified stylistically.  I would like to ask that if you have a GA book (scan or paper) with identifiable art that is not indexed on the GCD that you let me know.  Best thing would be for you to become an indexer (PLEASE!!!) but if not you can let me know and I can add it to the GCD.  Your help would be greatly appreciated in giving credit where credit is long overdue to these pioneers of the hobby we all love.  narfstar JIM

Is this site goldenagecomics.co.uk associates with the Grand Comicbook Database?

No we are not associated with the GCD, but since all our members have access to a wide range of GA comics  we thought there might be some small chance a few people with enthusiasm and spare time might like to help out with the indexing over at the GCD. Not all the comics we have here have been indexed. It has been mentioned before and eventually we were hoping to have something similar here, but for the time being if anyone with spare time would like to add some info about any of the unindexed comics they might have in their possession, l am sure it would help out all fans and collectors of the comics.

Thanks for the plug Aussie.
As I mentioned, by using the two sites together my name has appeared and will be appearing in Alter Ego because  I was able to use the GCD to find credits then come here to download available books.  If anyone has any recommendations of signed but unindexed books just let me know. narfstar JIM

Nice topic, narfstar.  I really appreciate the work that has been done so far at the GCD and places like atlastales, and I think that as we re-examine the goldenage as these comics become more widely available with the advent of scans that it is a perfect opportunity to identify some of the artists and writers if possible.  It's a perfectly wonderful way for people to contribute who don't have access to old comics to scan.  As one who is new to many of these goldenage comics, just being able to put the name of an artist together with a story they've done is key in figuring out whose stuff I want to look into.  I would suppose that the copyright issues might be too dicey, but it almost seems like a link could be posted on the GCD to a corresponding public domain scan.  I can  understand how this might be complicated, though, for now I'm happy just to bring up the effort to index the mountain of goldenage comics and better sooner than later.

Cheers,

Darwin

I have brought up such a link.  There is currently a rule against linking anywhere other than in the publisher section linking to publisher sites.  Maybe that can be changed because I think it is a great idea.

I've been contributing myself to the GCD as of late. And that was in correctly identifying the works of some the artists whose work was mistakenly identified as by someone else on some MLJ books. I hoping to develop a working knowledge of the Fawcett and Quality artists and their styles - through viewing their work on this site - in order to help identfy more artists on the GCD.

Hey gang
To go along with the redo of the GCD some of us have modified covers. Here are some of mine.

Cute stuff narf.  :)
Just a suggestion but if you do a search for 'free fonts' you can find more 'comic script' styles to really pull off the effect.

Thanks Yoc I will try to keep that in mind. I wanted to keep the "texture" the same on Henry Andrews so I had to cut and paste pieces of letters together to make the letters that I needed.

Cripes, that's a lot of extra work!
It's something Photoshop can do pretty easy if you can find a cheap copy.

It's also worth pointing out that, if (like myself) you didn't take the hint and head over to the GCD, at:

http://comics.org

for those just joining us, take a look.  They did a terrific job overhauling the system, including the clean layout and long-awaited search form at the top of every page.

Thanks for the plug John. BTW the Henry Andrews comic cover may be on the site if we can get someone to clean up the word balloons. Any of the artistic talented so inclined to help out would be appreciated.
