Sinclair Oil RD 119 & Captain Electron
« on: December 26, 2012, 12:50:55 AM »

O.K., I just took a look at the part of this web site that has the Public Domain PSA & Company Giveaway comics on it, and I can't find the comics for the Sinclair Oil RD 119: The Miracle in your Gas Tank & Captain Electron. So I was wondering if they are part of the Public Domain?

Here are the only pics I could find online for the covers for both comics.

I know that Sinclair Oil is still around, so they may still have some copyrights on the RD 119 comic, but I have no idea if the company that made the Captain Electron comic is still around at all.

Sinclair Oil should be OK. If Captain Electron carried a copyright notice then it is not public domain, if it has no notice then it is PD. However it may be orphaned. I have the Captain Electron somewhere but finding it would be a problem

What makes an orphaned comic different from a public domain comic?

I have the RD 119 book and it is PD for sure. Cannot say the same for the other book although I do recogize the cover art even if I can't place the artist name at this time. He did some Flash Gordon type stories during the 1950's and early 1960's and some Fanzine work during the Golden Age of Fanzine's. Perhaps we can find his artwork in the fanzine section. Just a thought.

The cover artist of the Captain Electron comic is Jay Disbrow.  You can find his art in a number of the Star Publication titles we have here at CB+.  He also did work for the Iger Studios that appeared in various Fiction House titles.  Look him up on the GCD and I'm sure they'll give you some more specifics.

From JohnC on DCM -

I don't know how accurate this really is, because I haven't investigated any of it, but this could be handy if it makes sense:

http://www.outofcopyright.eu/

How does it work?  Apparently, by the flow chart in this enormous PDF:

http://www.outofcopyright.eu/research/Calculator%20Poster.pdf

I figure CB+ would have need of this.  I hope it works for them!

Thanks Yoc very complicated stuff. I took a quick look at the poster and just followed one path as a shot  and found one good piece of information. If a work was by an unknown author it is considered orphaned in Australia. That would give us some good go ahead on some Australian works anyway.

O.K., sine no one has posted the RD 119 comic yet and everyone says that it is part of the Public Domain, I was wondering if it would be O.K. with everyone if I posted it? I do have the comic, but it is in poor condition (the comic pages are all yellow and are a little dirty), but other then that you can still read it.

Post it. By the time I get around to posting mine it will be Xmass. I think it would be fine.

RB thinks he knows what he's doing.

Well I got some good news and some bad news about the RD 119 comic. The Good news is that I got the comic pages scanned and they are ready to be posted, the Bad news is that there seems to be a page missing and I don't know if it was part of the story or is it was a coupon that you could have used to buy gas back in the 1950s. So, should I still post the comic as is, or see if I can find the missing comic page?

Something is better than nothing. We have a lot of comics with missing pages here. You may notice from time time they get replaced by more complete versions as pages show up. So yes please post and if you come across the missing page later we can add it.

Great, then I will post what I have ASAP. As for finding the missing page, that might take some time becuase of how old this comic is.

Your welcome, I thought you guys would like it ;). Now if only I can find the missing page for that comic. If someone already has that one page, then it would be great if they added it to the comic. :)
