And, something that I think qualifies as a bit special:

Captain_Marvel_Adventures_044.cbz uploaded to the FTP

What makes this one stand out is it gives us the complete Mr. Mind and the Monster Society of Evil serial on the site; which is one of the- if not THE- greatest comic book epic of the Golden Age.  Allow me to give my sincere and huge thanks to everybody else who posted parts of this; I know Darkmark's posting of the next-to-last chapter was what sent me looking for this last part.  If people know who the other scanners were, let me know so I can say thanks to them as well.

Enjoy!

Nice job on sharing all the Fawcett's gang!
It's been a real boon on them the last while with almost everyone who uploads getting in on the act!

Bravo to all of you!

I did better than my last early issue of this title; at least only the back cover is missing instead of both:

Target_Comics_v2_n02.cbz uploaded to the FTP.

Basil Wolverton Spacehawk is the highlight here; it remains one of the most visually stunning series ever to grace a comic book page.

That would be wonderful, Aussie. While both the BC and IBC are missing, 67 of 68 pages is better than 66.  :)

Would you like this front cover as well or keep the old one.

Let's use that new front cover as well, since you found it.  My front cover is actually very good considering the back is completely gone; but high end copies will show through.  ;D

I'm uploading the corrected and more complete version as I type; thanks again!

Thanks Eric, what a great comic. Sweet scans, too. Compliments to the chef.

Is there a reason why you chose not to place an indica or reference data page at the beginning of your scans? I got to marvelling at the book and wondering who did the nice scan work and had to chase down these threads to find who did the work.

Good stuff ;D

Well, if you saw some of my earliest efforts at scanning you would see why I didn't credit myself; there are at least a few where I may go back once I'm done with my backlog and redo them.  :D

More seriously, I normally don't credit myself as a way of saying "these books are out here for anybody to use".  They're not mine, I just happen to be the person making the Public Domain material available to people.  I figure the forums and the credit on the site lets enough people know I did them; if they then escape into the wild so much the better.

I'm going to be irked if I ever see my stuff show up at Wowio, though.

Anyway, thank you for the kind words.

If it shows up on wowio that would make you one of the giants whose shoulders they stand upon.  I agree that i would not want them selling my stuff that I want distributed free.

Hi Eric,
I love your attitude about your scans.
I too feel very much the same.  BUT I do enjoy adding in my silly Monkey.NFO scans.  That's my own carrot to get the job done.  I do them last and because they involve a tiny bit of creativity it helps me slog through the usually boring scanning or editing process.  They certainly aren't being done to lay claim to the scans.  Once I've released them to the world I hope as many eyes as possible get to see them.  But I wouldn't want them being sold anywhere either.

Yes, the idea that someone takes the scans you've labored over with the intent purpose of freeing them to the public and turning them into a moneymaking opportunity does rile one up a bit.

I consider the signature of a scanner nothing more than that being just a signature for reference and not like someone is just trying to blow their own horn.

Anyone swiping the scans with the ulterior motive of profit would probably remove any personal signatures anyhow.

Well now that has me thinking.
Is it possible to legally protect a scan one has done of a more obscure book in order to prevent the profitters from harvesting your scans for personal gain?

Possibly but not likely, rez.  Your work would need to be "transformative", if I recall correctly.  And showing that would be a pain.  Not to mention likely defeat the goal of having scans as close to the originals as we could.

Yep, the only way you could make it hard to steal would be to deface the scans with some ugly watermark like GM scans have done.  It defeats the purpose of sharing them IMO.

I understand the Overstreet Guide has done it by including listings for some books that have never been printed.  This way they can check in any other 'guides' and scream foul if they find these phantom books.  But that's a different kettle of fish to the issue of scans.

I've seen my own scans (yes, there are some out there, not a lot) being shared where people have dumped my MonkeyNFO scan, shrunk them and reposted them.  While that slightly annoys me (more for the shrinking than anything) at least they weren't being sold.

--------

Hey gang, I hope you've noticed I've uploaded OtherEric's scans of a long missing Phantom Lady book!

And a big thank you to Yoc for his clean-up of this one; since it will eventually go into the Phantom Lady archive I thought we might as well make it look as good as possible from the get-go.  ;D

Oh, as an aside:  It was this book in particular that I figure has the best chance of winding up on Wowio...

Actually, that's not even enough, just for the record.  Serj is being nice by disallowing those books.

The only way you can get copyright on something is by investing artistic effort.  No, just "messing around" with Photoshop doesn't count.  You need to, essentially, create a new work based on the original.  For example, if you recolored the images or "updated" the dialogue, that would probably qualify, but might also be borderline, if it was too close to the original.

Just slapping a logo on top?  That might give leverage for a trademark suit, since it's arguable that the logo represents you.  But that can also be easily chopped off, and it looks ugly.

Think in terms of text, where this is confusing:  Under what circumstances do you think you'd win a court case if someone "steals" your reprint of "Hamlet"?  Basically, in any case where your version differs in substantial ways from the original text.

All-Famous Police Cases 16 uploaded to the FTP

Not a lot to say about this one; other than the L B Cole cover.  But it's another drop in the bucket of the goal of get every PD book scanned.

Fiche books are a wonderful thing; they let us see hundreds- if not thousands- of books we wouldn't otherwise have.

Yet, when the opportunity to upgrade to a paper scan appears, it's generally a good thing.
