Glad to see you've got a home for these books Richard.

Hi Richard. Just to let you know that your Genio Negro has made me realise we can host Roberto Alcazar Y Pedrin, as Genio Negro is actually part of that series and a simply huge run it is too. I've now found a couple of very early issues to go with our #1 already on site. Thank you and keep up the good work.
Amending this to add that I've uploaded 4 early adventures and moved your contributions into the new Roberto Alcazar y Pedrin section, and I fancy a good dig to try and find some more.
-
So Paw you feel confident these are safe for us to carry? I leave it to you on the non-US
-
I have a bunch more of those.....I just need to get scanning now that I have my new scanner. Thanks for the encouragement Paw Boon!. Plus I need to get around to the rest of La Arana Verde......

"So Paw you feel confident these are safe for us to carry? I leave it to you on the non-US" narfstar.
Well, Having had a chat with Mark, I think that up to around '60's, we should be o.k. on the same grounds as the other Spanish titles we host. They are available on a number of sites and I don't mean torrent sites. These are quite high visibility Spanish language sites which have been around for years.
-
I've uploaded a few more Roberto Alcazar issue's and another La Arana Verde (# 2) and that one is in color. More to come later.
RB
-
I have also Uploaded the Flame # 3 C2C from Ajax-Farrell And Super Comics # 25 the Magic Morro story only plus the front cover. More to come.

Thanks for all of your uploads Mr. GA.
A nice variety of titles.

You're very welcome. I have more international than USA titles to donate though so it will be a bit lopsided.

Since I am familiar with a large number of the US comics it is really great to see things that I had never seen before
-
Key Ring Comics - Radior The X-Ray Man - Radium was his Milk..........uploaded for your reading pleasure
Mr Goldenage

THANKS I have wanted to see this book for a long time. It was on my top ten list.
-
Narf I am glad to have made your top ten a top 9. Thanks for the help you've given me.
RB
-
You would not happen to have Superworld 1 or Bang-up 2-3 lying around or perhaps Challenger? And if you have a Superworld, I need a copy to add to my one from each publisher collection.
-
I may have Superworld # 1 I will have to look. If I do its a digital copy. Bang Up 2 & 3 sorry no. I do have Consolidated Topps 2000 and Tops 2001 complete C2C. I see that you have my old scans and some digital camera scans. Would you like both books paper scans from my books I have here? Let me know.
RB
-
We would love to replace my crappy digital camera scans with paper thanks a lot
-
Ok I will start scanning them this week. It will take me a while since it is such a large book. I will have to break it into 3 parts.
RB
-
Looking forward to it Richard!
:)
-
Another oil strike! Great stuff ;D
Now Richard, can you magic up some Aus. Captain Atom or some more Super Thrillers with Ace Hart. Or some of those seriously obscure Aus. superheroes?
-
I will see what I can scrounge up this weekend for AU stuff and UK stuff too. I took apart the Topps 2000 and the Top 2001 to scan it was the only way to get good clean scans. Most books I dont have to do that to. I do not have any Captain Atom but I do have some Shadow, Panther and some Catman and other stuff. Let me sort through. I have more spanish books too to scan. more to come stay tuned.....
Richard.
-
Richard, Aus. Shadow should be fine and Catman but I'm not sure about The Panther as there have been new comics with this character in recent years, although they seem to have disappeared again. Not having an example of the new editions, I can't check the indicia but I have a feeling they were new stories. I'll do some digging but this is a bit obscure.
-
I don't know if this takes us much further forward but have a read at this:-
http://comicsdownunder.blogspot.co.uk/2007/03/exit-panther.html
Then here:-
http://dstudham.www8.50megs.com/panthercomics/panther-welcome.htm
-
So does David Studham own the rights to the Panther? If so it seems he might be willing to give us permission to use the reprints, even more current ones, onsite. It would be good advertising if it becomes viable to publish again.
-
Topps Comics 2000 Part 1 of 4. The 1st 32 pages out of 128 pages of large scans. For your reading pleasure.
Richard
-
Awesome thanks
-
El Vengador De Venecia Con El Guerro Del Antifaz # 302 now uploaded.
Amarga Verdad Con El Guerro Del Antifaz # 318 now uploaded too.
what do you want next?
Richard Boucher?

Invisible Avenger # 24 starring Cometman (AU 1952) is now uploaded.

Thanks Mr GA.
A neat little addition to the site.

Jetman and his robot Tempo from Jetman Comics # 3 Australia 1950's?
Richard

Thanks again Mr. GA.
Some neat little rarities you've been adding lately.
Joe

Thanks....Much appreciated. Wonderboy and other fine features this week.
RB
-
More Jetman if you can find them would be appreciated. I think DC's Space Ranger may have been influenced by Jetman The Space Ranger
-
Great stuff, Richard. I keep a card file of "obscure" heroes and had nothing for Jetman - I have now. Thanks.
-
Paw & Yoc,
I have two books I am not too sure about take a look at the covers and see if you recognize these or if you think these are ok or do you need more info. Neither books have dates on them. Let me know. I'd like to scan and upload them here & @ DCM.
Richard
-
.....and this one...
-
Man do you have some cool stuff
-
Thanks but can I upload them here? do you or Yoc or Paw know?
Richard
-
If you upload them we can pull them off to look at and Paw is most likely to know

Miracle Man is a British reprint of, either a Spanish comic, Superhombre, or the Dutch comic Mirakel Man - can't remember which is the original. See here for a Spanish example:-
http://tebeosycomics.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/el-superhombre-1958.html
OK I've looked at my notes and the Spanish one seems to be the original, with the British version being a translated reprint and the Dutch one being a reprint of the British issues. There is a TP (Thorpe and Porter) sign on the Dutch version which tends to confirm the above. I have 2 Dutch versions on file and ready to go but I just wasn't sure but I think we can go ahead now. I've had a search and can't find any modern reprints anywhere. So, I've convinced myself - carry on. We could make a note cross referencing the different versions. By the way, each British issue is a compilation of a number of thin Spanish comics The Dutch reprints are also 1 story each. The British series ran for 13? issues. But we have to be careful as there are Blackhawk reprints in back of some later issues. Please check.
Oh, this is good, I think a run of Spanish issues are available on VISOR. Have a look, just scroll down on the above link to where it says, "SUPERHOMBRE

Radius - you got me there but I do want to see it, so let's have a look.
-
Miracle Man has no Blackhawk in it and it is a rather thick book with many Miracle Man stories in it. I will scan it this week along with Radius, Cat-Man (AU), Wonder Boy (Which I was already scanning), Part 3 of Topps 2000 (and finally done!), and some other goodies by the end of this weekend. Sound good? You missing me uploading spanish books yet? Let me know.
RB
-
Are we sure the AU Catman is PD. Not saying it is not but have we heard from Paw?
-
I will scan it (Cat-Man AU) for my own benefit anyways and if it can't be posted here I will post it into one of my Yahoo groups.
RB
-
Looks like posting here is a go
-
Ok I will scan it this week then.
RB

Cat-Man # 23 from AU is uploaded. Enjoy. I'm off to sleep.
RB

Thanks Mr. GA.
Looking forward to checking it out.
Joe

no more uploads until my new operating software arrives and I can revive one of my 3 dead computers and scan again. Sever failure took down all three computers with a virus that destoyed my OS. only way to rid of the virus was to re-format the drives which loses my info. Ordered my OS and I await its arrival. I am typing this on my laptop. I will stay in touch.
RB
-
Sorry to hear about your computer problems Mr. GA.
Hope you get them resolved soon.
In the meantime enjoy a couple of the GA Australian rarities from Ozbauld- Char Chapman #1, which I uploaded yesterday and the sci-fi comic, Adrift in Space, which is going up shortly.
Best
Joe
-
Just uploaded several more Aussie comics from Ozbauld. Some humor, some adventure and another issue of Captain Atom (#58) that has the most politically incorrect ad on the back cover that I have yet seen. It makes me cringe just reading it.
You have been warned.
Joe
-
I had to look and OMG that is really bad!
-
OOOh, cringe.
But having another Cap. Atom is great and a Char Chapman. Christmas come a couple of day early. Thanks.
-
Thanks for more great stuff. BTW Where did you get the virus from so we can avoid that site
-
It was on a site called Angel's Movie list looking for Kilink Movies. so stay away indeed.
-
Thanks good to know
-
Thanks good to know
Yeah,you are the best!
Keep up the good work!
-
Sorry for being gone so long from scanning.
Now I have my main server/computer back better than ever with a new power supply and fan (upgraded main hard drive 2 TB internal 1 TB storage internal & 8 gigs of memory with 1 1 GIG ethernet card and 10 USB ports) and then...8 USB external 1TB drives & 2 2TB USB external drives that are used as storage. (But $200.00 poorer)
All I have to do now is transfer all my files from my other computer to this one and then hook up my scanner and start scanning once I load all my software. By the weekend I should be good to go (and it's a 3 day weekend for me too!).
Fist thing is to finish the Topps 2000 part 3. Then onto other goodies. It will be good to be back to scanning and downloading. :-)

Actually now I am not going to go the network route again. I am down to 2 computers. So, since I still have issues with the other one I am going to keep them apart for now. Everything I have runs Vista except I have 1 PC that is a Dell XP Pro unit which I am not using right now. I have one dead one left to revive and my Gateway laptop still works thank god. The Server is a Gateway unit and the other two are HP Desktops. Sorry that's confusing eh? So, 4 computers total plus a laptop. Mine was a simple 3 computer network running under windows server 08 5 licence user.
Yoc
As soon as I load my scanner sofware onto the new drive I will start scanning again.

Sure,richard,no problem,whatever it is,i am sorry.
What would you like to chat with me about?
-
O I know. When I was young(er) I had a home network ethernet cables running all over the place.
I think I had 5 machines (286/386/486/pentium) and I had a dial-up gateway set up on one... the sounds of the modem dialing out is summat that I really miss. It was just for fun and learning. Great games of Doom when my nephews and nieces came around.
But now I just do a directory share or two. Plus 16gb USB keys move stuff around easily enough with out all the hassle :)
Every machine is here a Dell. OS is Vista, XP and also recently Ubuntu.
I put Ubuntu on a machine which went bottoms up and I had no disk and I am really impressed.
I believe Vista support will be withdrawn a lot sooner then they did with XP. I am not planning on buying a new machine and OS upgrade is really expensive especially as I have Vista Ultimate. I'd be better off buying a new Dell!
As I am a code monkey just punching away and doing a bit of graphics stuff then Ubuntu would be cool for that. And I'll take the Vista machine/license slightly off line and use it for windows apps.
Anyway, that is the thought at the moment.
BTW are there any problems going on I am not aware of?
Best regards,
Mark
-
Well I found windows server 8 to be very unstable thus unreliable. Vista I had no real issues with after service pack 2 came around. how about you?
RB
-
Vista seems stable enough for me. But then again, I don't really ask too much from it.
-
So how about PD video uploads section of costumed advetures? no? yes?
RB @ Work
PS. I am so looking for the movie where the Black Sun VS the villian Ultrastar. Anyone have a clue? I don't.
-
Since size doesn't matter ;) just file quantity, maybe Mark will OK them.

Let us hope!

It is something that is very much in my thoughts
This rather site excellent site (a bit of juvenilia written by a rather talented person) http://camelotbroadcasting.com/ (http://camelotbroadcasting.com/) has a lot of them
Cliffhangers include
Zorro (36 episodes)
Fleischer Studios Superman (17 shorts)
Cross overs with Gene Autry, Don Winslow etc.
This is pretty much all the PD material I could ... hmmmm I mean the person who wrote this excellent site ... could find. But there is a question mark in my mind about the actual source of the prints/copies or whatever you call them.
BUT at the moment CB+ can only deal with .cbr/.cbz. It will be much later this year maybe next before I can turn my attention to it. I am thinking about keeping all as is and "bolting on" another site transparent to the user but internally different ... so we don't break what we have. Plus we can include OTR as well
It's really just the origins of the prints that I question
So in other words "Yes" we will and "No" not at the moment!
-
Hey Mark, thats great! I will take the yes for now and live with the no for later. Here is a list of movies that I am currently in negotiations to buy from a guy here in the states at a really great deal. Most of these (75 % or more) are PD. This is to give you an example of the types of movies you could expect. Well I ended up paying for 60 movies and he threw in about 30 movies in for free due to their quality. The other 22 he either didn't have any more or did not want to sell for one reason or another. I didn't bitch. I gladly took the movies. Grand total with shipping was $68.48 for everything so I have no complaints. Now I just am waiting for the two boxes to arrive.

Thanks guys. Up and back at it. Here is one from Brazil. Not my Scans.
Fantastic Comics # 2.
I hope this makes the PD cutoff. Nice if simple artwork. Since I cannot read the language I assume it is your standard spy/superhero stuff but looks like a fun story. Let me know Paw.
I swear I will Get Topps 2000 part 3 done this week now that I am over my influenza or whatever stupid thing I had for days and days that kept me away from work and fun stuff like this. <Smile>

Glad you are feeling better. My wife and son both went through it recently

Richard, that's a good site, isn't it? I found it a while ago and have been reading some of the comics. Fantastic #2 seems to be from the mid '60's, as do a lot of the comics on there, so I don't think we want to tempt fate.

The hero looks as if he was influenced by Mister X - the French one, that is - costume anyway.
These links will give you an idea of what was happening then and some prices for the comics.
Anybody reading these post will now have the appropriate addresses and can go get whatever tickles their fancy. That's what I do. In any case, I can't speak any Portuguese but I can work out some of what's going on.
Good that you're up and about again.

Hello Paw n All.....
How about a Turkish comic and such...can't say I know much about them....check the cover out as the attachment and then this link:

Yet another Nice One, Richard. I'll have a lot of fun raking through that site. I noticed a translation from a British title there, Jim Canada is from the British Dick Daring, which was either in Super Detective Library or one of the Cowboy Libraries. Pretty sure it was Super Detective but I'll have to check. In fact, I wonder if Jim Canada was a French version before a Turkish one. HHHHMMMMM!
Looks like there are a couple of things on the site that we can use. Not that I can understand a word of Turkish. It'll have to wait because we're a bit busy this weekend - unless we get snow problems - it doesn't take much to gum up the works.
-
I've already downloaded all the books fyi. If that saves you time. Let me know.

Let me know if you are interested in Middle Eastern Comics. See attachment.

Wow some more great looking stuff. The mid East stuff looks like some pretty good art. I really want to see Capt. Barbell.
-
Getting any futher than Turky hjas proven to be a great challenge. I am being locked out of most Mid Eastern (read Arabian and due east) servers and denied access.
Captain Barbell and the rest.....sigh....so far.....covers is the best I can do. But it is a start. At least when I do go and hunt I have an idea what to look for title wise. Wish me luck guys. Still not sure about PD issues with The Middle East and further due east. Any ideas O Powers that Be?

That last cover sure looks like a Doctor Solar take-off

That translate to Captain Mars from Vista Comics # 97 1964. And yes there is a comic cover for Doctor Solar that has a similar image just in reverse.

I am glad you liked that. I have a lot of covers of Philippine Komiks which makes for a lot of interesting "looks" with some really great artwork. I don't know if that is something that would want to be hosted here as an odd-ball sort of thing for people to take a peek at. I collect them so I know what to look for when I go a hunting,......hehehehe. Those waskally wabbits!
Any suggestions?

The GCD wants every comic ever printed to be on their site. Ideally fully indexed but just a record that it exists is good and a cover great.

Here you go Sir Narfstar. Amok File covers from Italy in Odds & Ends uploaded. It is a start. I will try from now on to store them in separate folders for each country/character if possible. Will that work for you? Let me know.
Paw. Would it be ok if I run some Italian characters by you to see if I have missed anyone? Perhaps you can inform me if I have left anyone out. I hope to have my Italian time-line from Post WW II to 1961 done by the end of this weekend. Let me know if you can help.
Mark. I hope uploading a file of just covers is not an issue here. Since these are covers of "foreign" comics not likely to be owned by most of the people here with a few exceptions (Paw and myself being two of them). Let me know if this is a problem. Thanks!
Richard.
Correction here: I forgot to mention these are the French Edition of these covers.
-
Very cool thanks. Since we carry Amok here the covers are surely OK also. I think that there may be some companies that we should avoid but many would be safe to post.

My Next Upload of covers was going to be a mix of Plutos, Mistero, and Maskar. I will have a sort of "left-over" upload eventually when I get down to the end of the Italian covers/panel shots. Glad you liked the Amok covers.

When you get to Fantax, bear in mind that it was a French comic originally. And from a quick look, I think there are a couple of British reprints.

Yes I was aware that Fantax was French and that he was just reprinted in Italian and that Amok being Italian was reprinted in France. Such is the way of the world it seems. Any Idea about Wonderman? French or Italian? Again thanks for the links they are very helpful as usual. I would like to run my partial list of Italian masked/costumed original Italian crime fighters by you when I get to that point, you game? Let me know.

Alain La Foudre covers (81 of them if I am not mistaken) in the French Language section should be uploaded now. Alain La Foudre was the Post WW II reprints of Dick Fulmine (Dick Lightning) stories from post WW II and WW II stories where Dick was definitely a fascist hero and the Italian ideal. Here the "costuming" is very important as it plays an integral part of the story. The "coloring" of the locals gives the storyline its "tint" if you will as you see Alain beating up on the people in the story mostly the lack of "whites" as his victims. Some may call him the most racist hero in comics of the day. You be the judge based on his covers. Italy never reprinted his early stories Post WW II to my knowledge; instead they stuck a mask on him and called him Fulmine Mascherato. After a relatively nice run as that character they reverted him back to Dick Fulmine who mused on his early days with regret. In the end he went out as the fighter he always was.
RB @ work.
-
And of course, Spain got in on the act and monsieur la Foudre became, Juan Centella. A seriously popular character. But as I said before, meny Euro. Characters were reprinted, translated for other countries. I found some Italian giallo pocket library titles reprinted in Dutch and the British Billy Bunter was also translated into Dutch. A good selection of British heroes saw reprints in France incl. Captain Hornet, Janus Stark, King Cobra, Spider, Kelly's Eye, Steel Claw and many more.
France had it's own Superboy but you'llcome to him, Tenax and the rest as you dig into French history. And you still have the delights of Fantax to come.
Great work, Richard.
-
Yes I've already seen cross pollination of titles cross the channel and the pond to make its way to the continent for reuse, rewrite, or just plain new episodes in the case of USA comics (more of a practice than one woulD thinK and more widespread than one would imagine). So yes I see your point. Ah Fantax, I have a dozen Italian versions of his comic. I've been tempted during my buying madness to buy the whole 26 issue set, but resisted. He's my # 1 go to in France. O an thanks for the kind words on the write up on Alain La Foudre. Have you taken a peek over at the newstand for the year 1940? If not run right there and go read the new top header. My First. I am working on 1941 right now.

In terms of foreign language, I think this site will only achieve its bona fides when it has MAX UND MORITZ by Wilhelm Busch in the German language section. From all I've read, this work is considered of great importance in the development of the comic book, by historians of the medium (regardless of what Scotland might claim). ;)
I have my own MAX UND MORITZ book, in German--I got it last year, sehr gunstig, in Vienna--actually it's the kind of book you flip over, so it has Heinrich Hoffmann's DER STRUWWELPETER on the other side. My book is copyrighted by the publisher so it doesn't qualify for this site, but given the age of MAX UND MORITZ, I'm sure there must be some vintage pages in the public domain that could be put up, for the sake of scholarship.

Hi Sir Kelly
I must disagree with Mr Kelly. I would like to know of another site on the web that offers non English books or for that matter any Non USA books. There are other sites that offer USA books. I think the UK/AU section is a great section too, probably second to none on the net currently. We'd love to have German comics from before 1959. I have not made it to that part of the world yet. I just got through spending 1700 bucks mainly on Italian comics from 1938 through 1959 and some French books all in all nearly 100 books. I'm pretty much spent for this year except for the odd book here and there. But I will start the buying spree next summer and I hope to capture middle and northern Europe (and Eastern Europe if there is anything there to get) so lets hope there is something in Germany for me to purchase. Wish me luck or give me pointers.

Well if you're ever in Munich, you have to look for anything PUMUCKL by Ellis Kaut (with Barbara von Johnson illustrations)--but this is mid-'60s and beyond and I'm not sure if there were comic books, but there was everything else (Pumuckl being a huge thing in Bavaria). My great regret is that when I was in Munich I never looked for it--so some day I have to go back there and hunt for Pumucklbuchen & Pumucklfilme (I did buy the first children's book when I was in Vienna last time). I'll have more about Pumuckl in a couple of days.
But there's lots of things to search for in Europe--I wouldn't know where to begin with all the great kinds of comics and other funny books produced in Belgium, France, Switzerland, Germany, and yes in Eastern Europe. When I was in Serbia, I saw that they were having a comic book convention in Belgrad--I believe the date was something like July 7th, 2012--but my friend and I were heading into the countryside and then back to Austria, so I couldn't manage it.
-
A little more info I've been able to glean on classic German books and comics. In terms of children's books, magazines and fllms--my Austrian friends tell me that Hoffmann's STRUWWELPETER, Johanna Spyri's HEIDI and Astrid Lindgren's PIPPI LANGSTRUMPF, MADITA and others were all perennial favourites. In terms of comics, Germany didn't do a lot except translating American comics into German, but Rolf Kauka created FIX UND FOXI in '53--which was the most popular homegrown comic.
Out of the Kauka studio comes a lot more comic work and animation. The Italian comic artist, Massimo Fecchi (probably best known in North America for his work on Disney characters) collaborated with Rolf Kauka and produced a lot of comics with him from '73 to '95. Including work on DIE SIEBEN SCHNUCKEL in the '70s and the PUMUCKL comic book in the '80s.

Now uploaded in the Italian Language Section under the Non English Titles: Tanks L'Uomo D' Acciaio N.-47 "Guizzo Al Polo" (Wriggle at the Pole) November 22nd 1946 Italy's Golden Age. Tanks was a strange title. It had two directions. One was surreal fantasy & magical along with missing/lost continents/races types like this story, and the other was gritty urban mystery/detective stories with horror elements and the witchcraft-mystical elements thrown in as well. Goofy stuff and the artwork reflected this as well. Plus a sidekick named Wriggle? Who calls his partner Papa? ...... For your reading pleasure.

Newly uploaded: Mirko N-66. Date Unknown - From Italy's Golden Age Post WW II Prior to 1949 would be my guess. The gist here is the rescue of Dolly which one presume's to be Mirko's girlfriend/love interest (see Tour Of Italy: Mirko). This one features Mirko in a costume for a change rather than the standard trunks and boots. Strangely he does not employ his super power to grow to 100 feet in this issue. For your Pictorial enjoyment:... L' Uomo Mascherato N-14 "L Assalto Alla Banca!" 1947 golden age comic of the "Masked Man". Well Written stories sad to say that is what our version lacked. I did a course in Italian a couple years ago. Not really enough to understand the language--but at least I know how words are pronounced. If I try, I can get the gist of some of what is said in these. There's a lot of Italian in English (thanks to the importation of Latin early into English and then later the fascination that English writers have had with Italian). So it's possible to figure out what a lot of words mean. L' Uomo Mascherato being a good demonstration. L'uomo is obvious because it sounds like the Latin homo for (the) man. And if you know that ch followed by an e has a k kind of sound--then it's the Man Mask plus an ending. Italian tends to put long endings onto things just to be fancy, while in English we clip off endings.
Of course, this is still a long process, and it's better just to look at the pictures.
-
Well I guess I should be happy that you all are at least looking at the pictures. I've got a whole bunch more coming. By the time I am done we will have the best Italian Language Section on the net. And who knows by the end of it all we may have learned a little Italian along the way. I know I've picked up a word or two here or a phrase or three there....they come in handy in other stories when repeated in other books. There is not enough books up yet for you all to read at one time, as I do. So wait and see I guess....more to come unless you all want me to stop.

Il Scarlatto Scorpione <Just Kidding!> L' Uomo Mascherato N-56 - "IL Mistero Della Sala "B" Italy's Golden Age - April 17 1947. This issue shows a huge progression in the pictorial layout as a story telling device. The artwork improved too at this time given the year of the story was orignally published. Speaking of years. These are as noted on the front cover "Collezione" or collections. These are stories that were stopped by the facist government when the USA entered the war and Italy banned all imported character concepts, stories, art and anything American related (Except for Mickey Mouse obviously he was a facist!), So these collections are the pre 1942. Go look in the Italian Language Section which soon will be one of the best sites for Italian fumetti books on the net. What do you all think?

Out of the Kauka studio comes a lot more comic work and animation. The Italian comic artist, Massimo Fecchi (probably best known in North America for his work on Disney characters) collaborated with Rolf Kauka and produced a lot of comics with him from '73 to '95. Including work on DIE SIEBEN SCHNUCKEL in the '70s and the PUMUCKL comic book in the '80s.
Pronunciation with the c is tricky. If you have a ci then that's like "chee" but if you have chi then that's like "key." So Massimo Fecchi's name would have the hard k sound (just be careful how you pronounce that).
I go into a little more detail about Fecchi's work on the PUMUCKL magazine on my blog. But not much more and not as much as I'd like, since it was hard to find anything about it--and no pictures that I could use.
As I note there, the PUMUCKL magazine was actually the project of Kauka's daugher--Mascha. Fecchi was already working at Kauka Publications for about ten years before that--but it was Mascha who hired Fecchi for that particular magazine, as well as other artists. After this she seems to have gotten involved with the Amazon rain forest.
While most of us replying on the message board are English speakers, I would imagine there are people from around the world looking at this site. The folks behind this site probably have stats on that.
I was surprised to see that my blog got several views in Spain yesterday--I guess Pumuckl is very popular there. The more international appeal that a site has, the better I'd say. Otherwise you're just going to have a filthy lot of Brits and Americans--and who wants that?

Just going back to something jimmm said above re. Max und Moritz. There is quite a bit of stuff available on the net, here, for instance:-
http://germanstories.vcu.edu/mm/mmmenu.html
But they all have a copyright notice on them :-
"
-
Hi Paw,
What do they think they are copyrighting? All that stuff is PD. Interesting.
RB @ Work.
-
Unless it's the English translations and if it is then I assume the original German is o.k. And in any case all the stuff on the site is downloadable. As you say, interesting!
-
Well from the books I have seen, the published editions have the words reset in new typography. So the publisher would own the copyright on the typography. And they would own the editorial content.
From what I can find on the internet, the original didn't have set type, but looks to have been hand printed over the images. So in this way it's more like a comic book.
-
I grant that having balloons makes something look more comic book to me. Although, a lot of comics didn't have balloons and the convention for balloons was an evolving thing. And it seems like comics took a step backward when first person narrative captions came to dominate a lot of comics in the '80s and going forward.
But I think that for Max und Moritz it's the evolution of sequential art that the historians would say is the important factor. Although, I personally reject the whole sequential art argument as a definition for what makes comics comics. I feel that it rules out a lot of what used to be under the umbrella of comics, while letting in a lot of soggy notions that don't belong under that umbrella.
-
If it is PD then it is PD. Not sure if the translation would be PD also but I suspect it would. To be copyrightable it must add or alter significantly the original. A translation of the original is still saying the same thing as the original. I am sure this has been determined for other instances if someone is good at looking that sort of thing up. Just redoing the typset I would think not at all copyright. I am pretty sure I read that removing the color was NOT copyright. So we could use copies of reprints of public domain works in most cases despite the thoughts of the new printer.
-
jimmm, I like your thinking and being a fan of text strips as well as balloon strips, your ideas nicely blur the boundaries and lessen the impact of questions such as "are newspaper strips comics"?
The tradition of "comics" with illustrated panels and text below is/was well known in Europe. Famous newspaper features such as Rupert the Bear in the U.K. run like that and popular strips such as Kapitein Rob and Eric de Noorman appeared in newspaper and then were collected in landscape "comicbooks". In fact, here on CB+, there are examples of portrait format comics with text strips. These tended to die out, as did story papers, and we were left with all balloon strips. The thing that seems a hang up with many fans and experts is the sequential art issue. Now, I know all the claims made for Kirby and, as a fan, appreciate the work of Jesse Marsh, who seamlessly processes a story into the reader's eye but that is simply a different way of telling a comic story from doing it with a text strip, imo. And newspaper ballon strips are yet another way of telling the story. At their best, e.g.Alex Raymond, Caniff, Sickles, they are as seamlessly done as regular comics, you just get the story in smaller bits.
I might be courting criticism here, but bring it on ;)
-
JVJ is not a fan of the newspaper strip format for the most part. I have been reading Little Abner from the start and it flows very well. I have a Alley Oop collection and Phantom collection that I think the art flows very well. Some flow better than others. Comics that are reprints of newspaper strips sometimes look much too stiff to me.
-
I read all of those Scott McCloud books (well in the store--I didn't actaully buy them--oops), and I understand that he wanted to pay homage to Will Eisner, with his sequential art theory. But I think Will was just thinking in a very local way about his work and not really giving it a lot of thought. McCloud used that as a whole foundation for his semiotic theories and it's not a solid foundation.
What made me dismiss the theory out of hand is when he totally dismisses the single panel cartooon as not being comics. Which means a whole school of writers and artists can't join the comics club.
On top of that, the sequential argument imposes a prosaicism on the art form. There is a lot of literature and art which is not sequential--which is non sequitur, which is abstract. If somebody has to make one panel dependent on another for its meaning--then we're in real trouble. It means that comics have to be mundane to still be considered comics, where other arts can be really unconventional if they want to be yet their practitioners still qualify for club membership.
-
Yes, sometimes when newspaper strips are collected into comics, they don't look right and that's because they are often re-sized, cut and/or have panels taken out or shifted around. A common complaint of early Frew Phantom comics. Here, Pocket Libraries took newspaper strips such as Lesley Shane, Buck Ryan and Rip Kirby and did exactly that to them.
Yes, again, JVJ has told me that a couple of times. If you can find some Rip Kirby or Scorchy Smith, they are well worth a read. But even though I'm a huge Rip Kirby fan, I'd suggest Jeff Hawke and Garth as giants of newspaper strips.
I'll go off and consider jimmm's last post.
-
The GCD is flexible on sequential and comic. They do accept single panel comics such as Dennis the Menace. There just have to be some criteria. One reason is that children's books are not to be added or coloring books unless they are sequential.
-
I understand why the GCD has their own rules. They have to have some limits. As it is, the GCD has set for itself an impossible task of cataloguing every comic book (within their definition of a comic book). If they didn't impose some limits, there would just be a flood of other publications and it would get out of hand pretty quick.
McCloud's theory is a little different from the GCD's pragmatism. McCloud imposes a system that ends up excluding those single panel comics, but yet allows in the so-called digital comics. If the GCD followed that system, they would have to include every kind of digital comic that is out there, while excluding a lot of the early comics.
-
Print on demand has blurred the line. According to GCD rules if it is available as POD, which essentially every digital is, it can be included in the GCD if we know that someone has had it printed. Of course which books have ever been printed is hard to determine, so it is basically when one ends up in the hands of an indexer that it gets included.
-
Ok...I'll grant you all your points. So is there an issue with the upload? Is Fulmine Mascherato not acceptable? As far as I know it is a PD comic. Just curious since I uploaded it a few days ago. Let me know.

Z looks pretty cool.
-
New one on me. Well done. Interesting that even at this early stage, a masked villain is the title character and the hero is secondary, as far as covers are concerned.
-
I have two more Zamorro stories in house and another on the way. So you should see them soon. So he is the villain eh? That's what I have gathered as well. Interesting. Gotta love the villain.

Hey Guys & Gals here are some more Italian fumetti for you all....
Ciclone N-02 part II of previous story from N-01. ( Number 3 to be scanned next).
El Bravo N-15 Version 1 Part I - Serial or - Page by Page version Starring El Bravo, Marino Il ragazzo degli abissi + Slim Il ragazzo d'acciaio. The file was really large so I split the file into two.
El Bravo N-15 Version 1 Part II - Serial or - Page by Page version Starring El Bravo, Marino Il ragazzo degli abissi + Slim Il ragazzo d'acciaio. This is a page by page normal reading version.
El Bravo N-15 Version 2 Part I - LANDSCAPE version - Starring El Bravo, Marino Il ragazzo degli abissi + Slim Il ragazzo d'acciaio. Again too large of file so I split this one into two as well. It's rare I can scan a landscape book with one scan, this book was one of these. I took the advantage of this and scanned the whole book this way and then went back and split the pages, thus you get version # 1. I save the original version slightly edited at the scanning stage but not at the editing stage as in version # 1.
El Bravo N-15 Version 2 Part I - LANDSCAPE version - Starring El Bravo, Marino Il ragazzo degli abissi + Slim Il ragazzo d'acciaio. See above.

As I've recently noted elsewhere, I've gotten into a habit of late of thumbing through these old Italian (and Spanish) comics... although I can't read them, the artwork is usually pretty decently done. And this "La Dama Di Picche" series is rather interesting, the character reminds me of Phantom Lady for some reason.
Thanks for uploading them.
-
I'm glad you like them. I've a bunch more of the Queen of Spades..... Maybe we can convince Mr. Crashryan to convert these too over to English if he so chooses to do so as he has done for Plutos. Just a thought and thanks for liking the title.

Thank you movie lover. I have a problem though Piccola Maschera as numbered are incorect. Issue #'s 1,2, and 3 should be marked 7,8, and 9 respectively. I cannot seem to access them to edit and it is probably my bad memory on how to edit for mistakes in books I've posted. Do I need to log in as my Admin privliges? I don't know/remember. Crap-On-A-Cracker I'm going to turn 60 by years end and I swear I cannot believe it! Must be true since loss of memory (and another function) don't seem to work too well these days. Thanks for the help.
Kindly

Also, looks like Marvel has dusted off the character, retooled her and Teamed her with Devil Dinosaur last year http://www.comicbookresources.com/comic-previews/moon-girl-and-devil-dinosaur-1-marvel-comics-2015
Looks like Indy publisher, Red 5, took a stab at it in recent years too
https://www.comixology.com/Moon-Girl/comics-series/3945?ref=Y29taWMvdmlldy9kZXNrdG9wL2JyZWFkY3J1bWJz
That what I love about this forum, it can lead you down some pretty obscure comic paths that you never knew existed
-
Exactly.....this is why I think/believe Moon Girl to be PD since Marvel and others are using the character otherwise how could Marvel and Red 5 use an EC character and not invite trouble? No one has objected and more than one company is re-using her. So I think it is safe to post her stories here. I have issues 1 through 6 and issues 1 through 4 of Flats and Slats.....what say you Mr Warner?
I've got the scans. So why not? Let me know before I post the rest. I don't want to waste my time you know?
Richard Boucher AKA Mr_Goldenage.

Let me investigate!

works 4 me Mr Mark

I don't want to become embroiled in trying to parse what is and is not Public Domain, but I think it's worth noting that Marvel's Moon Girl is from the same universe as Moon Boy, erstwhile companion of Devil Dinosaur. Obviously Marvel/Disney/Corporate Superstate's legal team would have known about EC's Moon Girl but her status isn't really relevant since Marvel is not rebooting the EC heroine. The name is another matter...Marvel can slap a trademark on it (probably already has). They couldn't stop the use of the public domain character but they could prevent anyone using "Moon Girl" on their covers etc. The way they did with Captain Marvel.
-
Thanks Crash.....so where does this leave us? I say go for it. Of course I am bias because I have the 6 issues of Moon Girl and 4 for Fat & Slats (Which isn't all that great save for a story perhaps in each issue, Marvel Maid for example.) Really it doesn't matter anyways as I am currently posting Issue # 1 on my Facebook page International Comics of the Goldenage (I know Moon Girl is USA but hay we are all "international" to someone).
https://www.facebook.com/groups/ItnternationalGoldenage/
So I'm proceeding to finish editing the other 4 issues. If you want them here great....if not no big deal. But I hope I can share with everyone on a larger scale than I do on FB. After all it is about preservation for me, and the wider it is distributed the likelihood of a copy will always be somewhere. I see it like the Turkish superhero movies of the late 1960's and 70's, except for a scant few, several dozen movies are lost to all time and all that remains are the posters for them to remember them by. That is sad. I don't want that to happen to comics. Especially the ones we're not allowed to post here. Timely, DC/National, and Street & Smith. Those three are ones I post on my facebook group again in an effort to disseminated these books that are "taboo" out there for all to see and save. Just my 2 cents. It's your call guys.
Thanks for listening....
Kindly,
Richard Boucher Mr_Goldenage
"Sometimes you just have to go for it - even if you land in shit. How else will you know you've come up smelling like roses and that you have succeeded in your endeavor."
- Quote from and Old Man I know. :-)
-
Mark...did we make a determination on Moon Girl Status? Red 5 Pub. has her so I believe she must be PD since the EC estate has not reacted/sued them. Let me know.
Richard
From Red 5
Moon Girl
Masked vigilantes wage class warfare from the roof tops of 1950's New York; it's The Dark Knight meets Mad Men. Clare is an exiled Russian Princess hiding in New York. When enemies from her old life resurface, the repressed Warrior Queen must fight back. Moon Girl becomes a champion of the counter culture and inspires others in this era of social revolution to be more-than-human. But in order to defeat Satana, Sugar Plum Fairy, Tiki Bob and the dangerous forces they represent, Moon Girl will have to overcome her own neurosis!
-
Ah maybe PD as a character ... but that book makes me nervous!
-
I'll throw this into the mix about Moon Girl. Bill Black's AC Comics has been reprinting Moon Girl stories, along with other PD super-hero stories, in their Men of Mystery title for several years now.
-
Does that help Mark?
RB
-
"pull the trigger" Mark!
-
nope! lol Needs thought. Much discussion about EC on this forum way back. Have a search for it Wiser heads than ours were nervous, plus this particular one is a fiche :)
-
Mark....no big deal my friend.......I am happy to have them at all, (sorry if that sounds selfish), just wanted to share. So I will just move on to more productive projects..... so don't loose any sleep over it.
Take care

Flip Falcon in the 4th Dimension Compilation Part 1 - Called "Flick" in the first three issues of Fantastic Comics, I found this strip to be so weird but so intriguing and since it is set in "contemporary" times of the day, I thought I would include it in my Fox comp.'s. -
Flip Falcon in the 4th Dimension Compilation Part 1 - Called "Flick" in the first three issues of Fantastic Comics
I've heard that the word "flick" was banned by some comic book publishers/editors because with the sometimes muddy printing on newsprint in comic books of the past the "L" and "I" could sometimes run together turning the five letter word into a crude four letter word.

Reading all these Beetle stories together demonstrates what a problem it is that BB's civilian identity is a beat cop. In an emergency situation the cop is the guy who engages the bad guys, mops up, then hangs around to talk to the victims. He can't just duck out to "go call in a story" when the shooting starts. Consequently when a crime occurs Dan Garrett has to wait until the fireworks are over, then try to pick up the criminals' trail later as the Blue Beetle. Having a full-time partner makes it especially challenging. Garrett could only claim "I thought I saw someone running into that alley" so many times before Mike became suspicious.
The worst example of how not to deal with the problem is in the Swamp Monster story. Dan somehow rips off his uniform, fights as the Beetle, then puts his uniform back on in the space of a few minutes, all apparently while standing in the open.

Blue Beetle Big 3 Comics Compilation - The Blue Beetle stories from Big 3 Comics issue #'s 1 through # 7. Better artwork and stories here. Well it is really thank you to you and all the other scanners that made the comp.'s I've done capable to do since the FOx books (the ones I've done) are 90%+ here for me to use. I just hope you all like what I've done with all these comp.'s so far. ...sigh...Ok Mark...onward and upward.....Blue Beetle Comics (Holyoke) Compilation Part 2 - Comprising issue #'s 16 through # 21. The Blue Beetle gets a sidekick in Sparky (Later known at the end of his short run as Spunky, or were there two sidekicks? As "Spunky" ID is never revealed to be Sparkington J. Norhthrup as Sparky's civilian ID was established). Also the Blue Beetle Uniform starts to change into ....well....something not very Blue Beetle-ish. Scans from those great guys and gals @ CB+ and "Edited" by Mr_Goldenage. Next up Part 3 of the Holyoke war years run. Then the balance of the Blue Beetle Comics - the Fox Feature Syndicate Post W.W. II years. Enjoy.

Blue Beetle Comics (Holyoke) Compilation Part 3 - The end of the Blue Beetle Holyoke War years. Overall except for the Chas. Quilian stories on occasion the run is mostly inconsistent. Blue Beetle's uniform changes from story to story and issue to issue. Near the end the Beetle even had red trunks! So costume changes, two sidekicks, a Nazi Blue Beetle and even a Black Beetle! The end comes with Real Hit Comics # 1 - two reprint stories. This comprises issue #'s 22 through 30. Scans from CB+ and "Edited" by Mr_Goldenage. Finally the Fox Feature Syndicate's Post W.W. II years and the light at the end of the tunnel! Enjoy!
Richard Boucher
Post Script: Out of the next run of Blue Beetle Comics the Fox Feature Syndicate W.W. II years, only 17 of the 30 books remaining are currently available. Plus a handful of appearances in other titles. FYI.
-
Blue Beetle Comics Compilation Part 4 _ The Fox Feature Syndicate years Part 2. Issue #s 31 through # 37.
-
Blue Beetle Comics Compilation Part 5 - Fox Feature Syndicate: The Post War Years - issue #'s 38, 40 through 42, 44, 46, 51, & 53 (part 1). Scans from CB+. Part 6 next. Enjoy!

Blue Beetle Comics Compilation Part 6 - Finally the end of the Fox Feature Syndicate Post W.W.II years. Contains issue #'s 53, 56, 58, 60, the All Top run, Phantom Lady comics appearances, and Tegra & Zago Comics. That's it! Thank you all from CB+ & DCM - the scanners who did make this Fox Feature job so much easier for me and of course we all know where the scans came from and somewhat "Edited" by Mr_Goldenage. I hope you all enjoyed the Fox Feature Syndicate compilation run, which is probably like 40 or so comps!
What is next? My books, some Italian Fantax issues, more Plutos, a French book or two, a few Spanish books....and probably more Italian books, but which ones I don't know yet.....
......and then another G.A. company. Any suggestions? Take care and enjoy.

Santanik # 1
Author: mr_goldenage
Section: Italian Language Books
Description: Santanik # 1 from Italy circa 1964.
-
It is 1964 nice try .. it's even younger than me so no way PD :(
-
Also, the problem with all these Max Bunker/Magnus books, which takes in Kriminal, Alan Ford, Dennis Cobb, Agente SS 018 and others is that they are recently and currently being reprinted in Italy, by the same company. The copyright notice on the comics is very strict.
-
Sorry....didn't know that this would be an issue....I do however have all 100 issues. So no problem...again my apologies...
