If nobody else is trying for this one I'll probably put in a relatively small bid; in the 10-15$ range.  Nothing spectacular, but we might get lucky.

And this reminded me to check for some other Matt Baker books; I've got Authentic Police Cases 35 on the way from Buy It Now.  So this thread has done some good, at least indirectly, already.

And somebody outbid me on the Teen-age Romances; such is life.

Just a side note:  Don't hesitate to post interesting Buy it now items, as well.

Such is part of eBay life.  I missed the romance book, I got a crime book instead.  I wouldn't have thought to go looking for Baker if somebody hadn't mentioned it here.

That time I went after a batch of coverless Harvey's I only managed to bag one of them but I finished up with an early issue of Jungle Comics which was an unxpected bonus.

On Ebay some you win and some you lose.

Actually, after talking with the seller, they're willing to wait until I can pay for it in a couple weeks if I win.  So, I'll go ahead and ask:  What seems like an appropriate bid on this book in this condition, and was anybody else interested in making a run for it?  If the GD 2.0 list is about 180, and they're saying it's between 1.0 and 1.5, I'm inclined to say an appropriate bid is around 150 given the popularity of the title; a bit over Guide but not _that_ much over guide.  I'm not used to bidding on books like this; I would appreciate some advice.  And I don't want to step on the toes of anybody else here going for it; so I'll wait at least a day before bidding.

Price drops quickly with grade.  If it is a 1 then the price should be less than half of a 2.  Popularity may make it higher but I would not expect over $100. Just my 2 cents.

Looks like it would be a fun cover scan to reconstruct. She's pretty beat but may not be brittle.
I'd advise waiting till the end of the auction and then sending in your best bid instead of showing your hand early and letting others see your interest. You might end up getting it for the $50 or there abouts if someone tries spiking it a one or fiver at the end.
Good luck.

In your corner.

Well, the cover is probably the one thing we don't need to worry about; I'm sure we can find a high quality copy on heritage.  Anyway, it looks like I'll be making a bid on this one, even if I do wait until the last minute for the obvious reasons.  So unless somebody else wants a go; I'll plan on handling this one.  Wish me luck!

There are actually sniping programs you can run which will automatically bid for you in hte last few seconds of the auction.  Don't recall the names of any, but some posters here use them I know.

Top Spot Comics # 1 (Top Spot Publishing ... Gerona ...  Holyoke) with The Duke of Darkness & The Menace.  Ends on September 27, seller has 100% on 6500+ feedbacks, so the guy obviously isn't into ripping people off.  It's up to $78 US + S&H on 4 bids, which is more than I'm willing to pay for a comic.

Good luck to anyone willing to give this a shot.

That's the theory, given the release times and the contents.  But I don't think anybody here has bought one, since we have the books scanned here.  But since you bring it up, can you confirm this with a spot-check of a couple of issues, maybe?

I have to apologize to anyone who bid on that book for not checking-out this thread for a while.  I won Fantoman 4 and will be scanning it as soon as some other books arrive.  The S&H that was in the listing wasn't too high considering it was "Priority Mail", however, it took "mkearny" a week to get the book in the mail.  I guess it wasn't a "priority" for him to mail out the books after he received his money.  I also didn't like the fact that he added to the S&H after-the-fact when he sent an invoice for payment for something else I won from him.  I wasn't happy about that and let him know about it, and got excuses about the cost of packing material, which turned-out to be the FREE packaging the USPS hands-out to anyone who wants it.

Bottom line, he's a decent source for acquiring hard-to-find books, but be prepared for "hidden charges" and less-than-spectacular customer service.  Personally, I'm never dealing with the guy again because I don't like being lied to and don't see why I had to wait nearly two weeks for my "Priority Mail" shipment to arrive.

Bought on eBay: 3 MIGHTY MIDGET COMICS published by Samuel E. Lowe & Co. in 1943. This title was a miniature comic measuring 5x4 inches, contained 32 pages and was colored black, white and red. They usually sold 2 for five cents. The comics were printed on cheap newsprint so all the comics have medium tan paper. The comics in this set are Fawcett Comics characters and each is the first or only time a comic was devoted entirely to the character. Comics and conditions in this set are; LANCE O'CASEY No. 12 VERY GOOD ( nick out bottom spine, 1/8 spine split top spine, small piece missing top right corner front cover, small piece out top left corner back cover and some pages at that spot) MR. SCARLET AND PINKY No. 12 FINE (nick out at bottom and top spine); BALBO THE BOY MAGICIAN No. 12 FINE (tiny nick out top and bottom spine, small piece out bottom right corner front cover, 2 tiny pieces out left edge back cover).

I've got the LOC and MSAP, Doc,
plus Minute Man, Commando Yank and The Phantom Eagle. My BIGGEST regret in buying these was the atrocious printing. For just being black and one color, the black in my copies in worse than anything I've seen in a comic book.

Most of you probably wont be interested in this but I'm going to tell you anyway.  I don't know how to attach scans of my purchases and as they're large, landscape they don't quite fit completely on my platten.
I just received 2 issues of Wonderman, France 1950, no's 11 & 15 of Dynamic, being the 10th and 11th Wonderman titles.  Again, I can't find an email address for the seller but on e-bay France,( the seller is in Belgium) he is messiah 33633.  I realise these titles are no use for the site given the different laws, but anyone who is into non-mainstream heroes might want to take note.  Lovely additions to my collection.

I've been posting some old books, comics and fanzines on eBay lately (Mid-Jan 2009 onward). Just search JVJ Fan to see fanzines, JVJ GAC to see old comics, or just JVJ to see all my posts. I'm always adding new (and different) stuff. Just put up a copy of Heroes' Hangout and a Voice of Comicdom fanzines from 1967.

Thanks for the notice, narfstar.  I checked-out a little of what they had, but didn't get anything this site doesn't already have (I picked-up White Rider 6 and Boy Illustories 90, plus some recent books, should anyone care).  My tastes for comics stays pretty close to superheroes, although White Rider is growing on me.

I spent much of yesterday evening on their website. They do not have a lot of GA given their overall size. Their non-key low grade stuff onsite is also really cheap. Put in the OLDCOMICS  codeword to get 30% off puts a whole lot of stuff for under $5 and many under $2 or even under $1. I am still working on a preliminary list nearing $300 :o  that I will of course be pairing way down  :'( I have left out a lot of romance books that they have that we need. If anyone is interested in picking up stuff below ebay prices now is the time.

Of interest to nobody but myself, maybe, but I visited Amazing Comics (the seller of that auction) once, years ago.  It was a really nice shop, but I could never find it again, even knowing the address.  I had assumed they went out of business, but clearly that's not the case.

And yes, I'm pretty sure that other issues of Calling All Boys and True Comics are available here.  Most of the rest looks to be licensed or obviously renewed material (a fair amount of Archie and DC), should anybody be interested in it.

(Heh.  My last job was actually only a few minutes' drive from Sayville; if I was still working there, the auction would be extremely tempting.  Talk about instant gratification!)

Hey Narf,
For really long links like eBay I find using 'TinyULR' is the perfect tool to avoid broken links in posts.
Yahoo always buggers them up so Tiny is a must there.

Dead easy to use too - check it out.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the URL-hiders except where is actually solves a problem.  Since we're not limited by character count and there isn't any mysterious force breaking up long lines into itty-bitty pieces (heck, SMF even links the URL automatically, so there's not even a copy-and-paste step), it only serves to make it harder to guess what's at the other end.

eBay's may use really long URLs, but they're readable.  At a glance, I can see that the latest is an auction for a Sheena book.  The TinyURL version doesn't convey anything except "I use TinyURL."

In a forum like this, hiding the URL is only useful to trick someone into looking at the wrong website.
Title: Re: Ebay Finds and Buys -post your pointers here

The last third of Narf's link didn't 'take' JC.  Which would require people to retype the missing end to see the actual link.
Using Tiny is being nice and saving the reader the extra work.

I'd suggest Narf use BOTH methods and make everyone happy.

Ah.  I didn't look that far.

However...eBay doesn't care, as it turns out.  All that extra pipey stuff is irrelevant to the link, as is, really, everything after the question mark.  Click on it.  You know you want to...

That's what the world really needs--a URL processor that can trim off the extra junk on an address and still get to the same page.  For example:

http://cgi.ebay.com/SHEENA-QUEEN-OF-THE-JUNGLE-1-FICTION-HOUSE-1942_W0QQitemZ120425287439QQ

Hi John,
I'm not sure it's the same but I'm on FIREFOX and installed a tool called Greasemonkey. (hey, how could I now with my avatar?)
Anyways Greasemonkey is sorta like Java and runs scripts.  From there you can install user made tools of a sort.
ie. One to remove all the junk when reading and posting on Gmail and one called TinyURL.
With Tiny if I hit 'shift-T' while on ANY PAGE that I'm looking at it pops up a box with an automatic TinyURL for it.
I just hit 'ctrl-C' to copy it and then I can paste that direct link to people.  Four keystrokes to get a url!

Google GREASEMONKEY if you want to check it out.

No, I'm thinking of something that needs to be smarter.  As I said (or meant to say, if I didn't...), hiding the URL seems...wrong, since (snooty voice) hyperlinks are the backbone of the web.  More seriously, while I'm one of the least-paranoid people when it comes to computer security, I rarely touch TinyURL links.  It could lead to an article, a direct download, a virus-ridden page, an obnoxious video clip, or anything else (and if a hacker gets brief access to their table...?).

What I'm talking about is a hypothetical service that "knows" the structure of corporate URLs so that you get to the right page and it's obvious what you're pointing at, but all of the clumsy extra tracking information gets removed.  You know, the session IDs, the referrers, and so forth.  In fact, I've noticed a lot of TinyURLs point to nothing because of expired session IDs--they look fine to the poster, because they're still in a valid session, but nobody else sees it.

In the eBay case, it would isolate the item number (easily found) and build a new, clean link that points at that page, which is what I usually do manually when passing links around.

John speaks Computer Speak.  Greek to me but I always appreciate someone who cares about our security.
With TinyURL I look at who is posting them to decide if they are safe.

Sorry, it's not so much "technical" as "I assumed everybody reads these things."

Take a look at the original URL under discussion.  It comes in a bunch of parts that you recognize as you read them.  There's:
- The machine (cgi.ebay.com)
- A title
- A labelled item number
- A labelled command (ViewItem)
- A "hash"
- A tracking identifier (trksid)
- Tracking "parameters," eight in total, separated by those useless pipe characters

Every eBay URL follows that same format, of course.

The only "important" parts of this, obviously, are the machine (so the request goes to eBay) and the item number (to identify the page).  I suppose that the title might also be helpful (so that you know you're going to look at a Sheena book and not, say, a pornography stash), but it's definitely redundant.  The rest of the information?  That's just the "state" that Narf was in when he was looking at the item, and is of no interest to anybody except eBay's computer.

In an ideal world, that's what a URL-shrinker would do:  Chop out all that fluff and just give the smallest valid URL that works.

Of course, we could always rebel against the system and use HugeURL...

http://www.hugeurl.com/?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

Just took the plunge and bought three book that the site can use ( I Hope) Big Shot_052, Frankenstein_027 of which we only have a partial copy and a crime book.

I have earmarked almost a dozen other books from the same vendor that could be of interest to us and look ideal for scanning but I thought i'd 'play safe' for now and just start with these three books and so how thing go.

If they come though OK I will see about picking up a few more.

Was going to and was sitting here watching the clock and reading a forum when I'd misjudged the time estimate where I knew I had to be sitting there with the finger on the tab.

Clicked back and the auction was already over. Hate when that happens.
Figgered could have scanned the missing pages for the GAC scans and then resell the books.

One of those spur of the moment things. May see them back on there again tho' since you don't know what all is really going on behind the scenes of online auctions.

If you catch my drift ;)

The way eBay works, Astoldo, is that you can place a bit for $100, but if the minimum bid is $2, your bid is recorded as $2. Anytime anyone places a higher bid, your highest bid ($100) is "consulted" and a new bid is placed for you up to, and including, the $100. The fact that the bid on the Action Comics kept going up on you is that someone had a high bid in place already.

My approach to eBay is not to try to outbid anyone but rather to simply place a bid for the highest amount I'm willing to pay. I won't let it turn into a contest or a game. Too frustrating.

ps. welcome aboard.

I think it's been pointed out a few times that the optimal way to win an auction on eBay is not only to set your price in advance, but to only bid in the last second or two.  By "sniping," you cut out everybody else's competitive desperation.

I know a few times, I've bid on something, then bid on it again immediately when it was out of my price range.  That's some serious stupid.  "Gee, someone else wants it.  It's now worth more to me!"

One thing to consider is be the first bidder. Many people do not bid on an item just because it already has a bid. I have often been the only bidder and gotten GA books for a buck.

This is we do not have and neither does JVJ. I am current high bidder at $7.13 my max bid for the purpose of scanning. If anyone wants it to scan go for it or if I get out bid and you are willing to bid more for the cause or we could go together

$10 no strings...I'll just be happy to have the scan. You can sell the book and use the cash to get us some more goodies.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Just let me know where to send the cash if you win the auction.

Thanks guys. Most of the books I have gotten in the last few years have not been books that I collect. I get them just to scan. I will be sending some to JVJ that he does not already have. Since he does not have this issue he may be happy to get it after scanning. I think $20 is about all it is worth unless you think it is worth $30. Right now I will just up it to a $20

Hopefully you can score it for $20 -- but I'll kick in the $10 regardless. And sending it to Jim is a great idea and definitely one of the least things that we can do to show our appreciation for all that he has done for us.

No one else has chimed in and it looks like Jumbo is going to go for more than I think we should pay. They are not that uncommon. If some newbies want upgrades maybe they could chip in to a book fund. I would like to get this book it is a buy it now.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6633650620&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT  Do not see The Challenger books very often if we could get enough people 5 people to chip in $11. Some may want their money back and we could repost and resell giving back a fifth of whatever we get. Others like me would apply the money to go for another book. I would be willing if four others think this odd book is worth getting.

The Jumbo is over $25 and I think it is too common to pay that much more IMHO it will eventually show up. The Challenger book is less likely IMHO. I am all about getting as many obscure gems as we can find. Same dealer has some AJAX horror books but way over priced. Much more popular than Challenger which is also why they will probably show up eventually or I will be able to snag a coverless copy for a couple of bucks

Well, narf got me all excited about the ebay auction, and I got to looking at all the books that are out there for sale, all at deceptively low numbers...at least until you get to the last 60 seconds of the auction!

Carried away in all the excitement, I made my FIRST GOLDEN AGE PURCHASE! OK, maybe it wasn't a steal, and it IS already up on the site, but I want to hold ONE of these puppies in my hands.

So I won the auction for the Jumbo #74 for $20.  I am so...very...excited.  I also tried getting some others that aren't on the site, but things got too rich for me.  Coo Coo Comics and some others...I got smoked in the last few seconds of auction time.

great fun!

Way to go builder. I saw the prices some of these went for and was surprised. You really never never know. I got my two issues of True Aviation over 60 years old in pretty darn good shape for only a buck each. JVJ has his $40 limit I have a lot of GA books most of which were less than $5 and many for a buck. So when you see all the narfstar books realize I am not rich just lucky to be at the right auction at the right time. BTW when I only pay a buck for a book I usually tear it apart and document feeder it. I figure my time is worth more than a buck. And the book is digitally preserved forever.

It's not really a pointer as I won it, but in my ongoing mini-obsession about Nedor's Grim Reaper, I picked up a cheap GA reprint, which includes the ''Wonder Comics'' #2 origin of the Reaper.

From an old solicit of the comic:
ACG'S HEROES UNLIMITED #1
A special collection of never-before-reprinted Golden Age hero tales! Penned by the creator of Herbie the Fat Fury, Richard Hughes, these are some of his favorites taken from his personal collection. From Wonder Comics #2 comes the origin story of the Grim Reaper, along with The Commando Cubs by Bob Oskner, and the first story of Pilot Adventurer Cowboy Sahib by Leonard Starr (from Soldier of Fortune comics)! Shot from original proofs, this is by far the best Golden Age ACG collection yet! All this, plus a new Sam Glanzman super-hero cover (his first since Flyman in 1941). It's an event, don't miss it!

While it wasn't an eBay find (I have trouble containing my enthusiasm when the price on a bid item takes off like a bottle rocket in the final minute of bidding), I did otherwise hit a motherload in a recent purchase.

I am a member over at Comic Collector Live, a combination collection database and marketplace. When it first opened, it was great place to in-fill my modern and Bronze Age collection gaps, but it is nicely maturing. One of my buddies there, Pat McCauslin, runs a shop with some depth of offerings.

On its way to me are:

Target Comics v4 #1
Captain Midnight #53
Battlefield Action #20
Real Clue Crime Stories v7 #11
and 5 issues of Daredevil ranging from 93 to 119.

Finally, I will try my hand a scanning (I have done book covers before, but never full books), and get to find out what that struggle with the binding is like.

To say that I am drooling in anticipation would be fair.   ;D

I love opening those kind of packages builder. Depending on condition and company the spine can be a real problem. I like low condition books so if the spine splits I do not care. I would not want to scan my Harvey Hits #3 (first Richie Rich comic)

I think these will all be lower quality books, narf. I wish I were Richie Rich. I won't be too concerned with preservation given that they are low grade. I am more interested that they are reasonably complete.

Well, nobody else was interested. He paid more in POSTAGE (to Switzerland, no less) than he did for the book!

Such is the story of most of my eBay offerings, bb. I'm trying to raise some money to print the next issue of ImageS and people keep stealing from me. Three of four items didn't even get a bid and I pulled two others before they could be stolen, too. hell will 'em, I say.

Still I try....

Actually, Narf,
I sold the Erotoscope today for $566, which make me totally happy. I picked it up in Europe in 1973 as a curiosity for probably $10 or less, and had no emotional attachment to it. I'd be very happy to dig up another dozen such items in my collection. I'm heading upstairs right now to look for them. Wish me luck.

Title: Re: Ebay Finds and Buys -post your pointers here

I think about the massive collection that I have (nowhere near as precious as yours, JVJ...mostly Silver/Bronze/Modern), and think about what a burden it would be were I to leave dispensing of it my heirs.  It would be a sweaty couple days of lifting and a strained back or two just to get it out the door.

I thought about selling some off, but I see just what JVJ is going through...the crap shoot of whether there are any parties out there at auction time who would pay a respectable $ for the stuff.

I have thought about donating the collection as a whole to my alma mater. I learned that Brown University boasts of their collection rivaling any private collection in the US, and figure my school might be interested in starting their own (or adding to it).

I see Heritage out there as a possiblity, and know, as a last resort, one of the bigger buyers would swoop in to offer pennies on the dollar.  That thought kinda makes me sad.

Its all early thinking, but the reality is that I spend much of my time these days with my digital collection, and the paper has taken a back seat.

Second is an UNPUBLISHED page of Alfredo Alcala ORIGINAL "Voltar" art. It appeared, in revised form, in Magic Carpet comics #1 from 1977.

If I'm not mistaken Super Magician is a Street and Smith title and still under copyright so it is probably something we can't use here.

You can read Jon's tutorial on how to check on copyright status here-

http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/forum/index.php/topic,2452.0.html

We advise all to check out a comic's status to see if it is PD before going to the trouble of scanning it.  We can only use PD comics on this site.

If I'm not mistaken most of the contents of Super Comics consists of comic strip reprints that still have underlying copyright protection such as Dick Tracy and Little Orphan Annie.  We could probably host a heavily edited version featuring the cover and the Magic Moro story.

If the Buy Now price for that Star Studded Comic was lower, I'd probably buy it myself. But I've spent too much money in the last two months on vintage swag and it's about time I pulled back. But it's awfully tempting to buy all those goodies on eBay and other online sites. And reading some of the comics on this site just makes me want all the more to get the actual comics (as I've done in a few instances).

Just got a copy of DOLL MAN no. 2 from Lonestar. It's only in good condition, but it's nice to look at the art--which on CB+ is only available from fiche. This is one of the few issues where Reed Crandall appears to have done all the interior art on the Doll Man stories--which is the chief reason I wanted to get a copy.

Having gotten several orders from eBay or other online sources lately, I have a few grumbles. One is that it's really impossible to tell what you're going to get when the thing actually arrives. I've never paid for a CGC comic yet, but even these seem to be graded in an unpredictable manner--I was looking at a copy of FEATURE COMICS on eBay the other day, which in its CGC slab was graded 9.2, but from the scans it was clear that there were markings and abrasions on the cover which should surely have indicated a lesser grade.

Whenever I actually get orders that are in better condition than I expected, it's a great surprise--but also a rare one.

Another grumble is that, since I'm in Canada, many of my orders are coming by international shipping. Even though I always pay for the shipping up front, there's sometimes an additional amount that I'm expected to pay on delivery. But it's impossible to predict this additional charge. Most international shipments come with no COD charge--but since I always factor in the declared shipping costs when making my decisions to buy, I now wonder if I should calculate an additional 25% to cover any unexpected charges at my end .

I'm now expecting an order from Japan and I'm anxious over the amount, if any, I'll have to pay on delivery in addition to the shipping I already paid (which was almost as much as the actual price for the book I ordered).

Shipping costs has kept me from buying many books even within the US. I always buy lowest grade for scanning so I am never really disappointed with the condition unless a centerfold is missing. Most have comped the issues if the centerfold was out.
Title: Re: Ebay Finds and Buys -post your pointers here

The problem with lower grades is that they tend to fall apart unless you're very careful with them. With newer comics, priced lower, I don't mind that so much--but it's a different story with golden age books, for me. I may try to scan DOLL MAN 2, but I might do it when (and if) I get some more orders in. I'm just not sure if I can pull it off without hurting the book.

Even when I order lower grade books--I always hope that the book will be in a little better condition.

Well I often use a document feeder. So I tear the book apart and feed it through. The books usually cost $2 or less so It does not matter. If you want a top book like DM2 scanned unharmed you could send it to Rangerhouse for his "professional" scanning set up.

Yeah, if it was only a two dollar book I'd have no problem with scanning it. I've thought about getting it professionally scanned, but that's why I say I'm waiting to get more comics on order (that I might want scanned) before I come to a decision.

Hi Jimm,
If you are in the USA - Rangerhouse, a scanner of some note, uses a professional level scanner and is willing to scan books for others if wanted.  His scanner is much easier on books taking digital photos without the need of forcing a comic flat on a scanbed.
You can see his wonderful machine at this link - http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/forum/index.php/topic,4081.0.html (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/forum/index.php/topic,4081.0.html)

Rangerhouse is likely best know as the key scanner in the JVJ Project. 'JVJ' has provided over 1,900 comics for scanning and sharing on CB+ and DCM.

You're getting a bit carried away with the numbers, Yoc.
It's 1,900 and counting. 13,000 is almost as many comics as can be found on CB+. Let's stay real.

Here's the comic I was referring to, which has come up again for sale on eBay: FEATURE COMICS 104 (http://www.ebay.ca/itm/FEATURE-COMICS-104-1946-CGC-NM-9-2-OWW-DOLL-MAN-OHIO-HIGHEST-GRADED-/390538579985?pt=US_Comic_Books&hash=item5aede9d011&_uhb=1#ht_1158wt_1156)

Nothing against the seller, but I just don't understand how CGC comes up with these grades. I'm sure it's a very fine comic, but I don't see how it can be considered near mint. Examples like these make me question the whole CGC grading system. I wouldn't trust that any comic they grade is really in the condition indicated on the slab. And since you have to open the slab to find out--thus negating the grade--it seems like a dodgy system.

Title: Re: Ebay Finds and Buys -post your pointers here
Post by: paw broon on February 18, 2013, 05:07:11 PM
Of course it's a dodgy system.  Apart from that, what is the point in having a comic you can't read?  There were some at the last Glasgow con and a lot of talk among the punters about the condition and how could you check without negating the grading.  Seems daft to me.  I bag my comics but bags can be opened and I do open them - it's all part of the fun, imo
Mind you, there are a couple of back issue dealers here whose grading is alleged to be "loose" at the least. But as the comics are in bags, you can make up your own mind.
Title: Re: Ebay Finds and Buys -post your pointers here
Post by: jimmm kelly on February 18, 2013, 05:38:04 PM
Yes it's always seemed like a daft system to me, which is why I've never bought one of these slabs. Why buy something that instantly plummets in value as soon as you try to read it? And I buy comics to read 'em.

On the other hand, while most slabs are way way way over-priced, there seem to be a few that are priced at the equivalent value of normal non-slabbed copies. So in theory, all things being equal, I'd be open to buying those; however, if I can't even trust the grading system, maybe they aren't worth the bother.

I wonder how many slabbed books are missing centerfolds. I have bough a lot of books over the years only to find the centerfold missing. I have found most online dealers very willing to try to make it right. But at a con you can check the books out and should. No slabs for me.
Title: Re: Ebay Finds and Buys -post your pointers here
Post by: JVJ on February 19, 2013, 03:57:07 AM
Theoretically, Narf,
part of the slabbing involves a serious attempt at grading the book which, we all would hope, would notice a defect like a missing centerfold. Such a defect is supposed to be clearly noted on the condition portion of the grade label. Has anyone here purchased a CGC slabbed book with such a gross defect that went unremarked? Would love to hear about it.

I'm not one of the folk who wants to "read" my comics, but I sure want to look through them. And I agree that most CGC books are way overpriced, but supposedly it's the premium folks are willing to pay to "know" that they are getting the condition on the label. Which, again I agree, does seem to vary somewhat from grader to grader (or day to day, perhaps).

I've never bought a slabbed book either. My friend Bud Plant buys them occasionally and I love to watch him crack the seal and take the book out and page through it - just like it was a plastic bag. Overpriced, perhaps, but just a container after all.

I too would hope that such an defect would not go unnoticed but with the big differences in grades I have my suspicions that someone got sloppy, or worse bribed, because they figure no one will open it to know. I think the premium is only on really rare or on fine or better books. I have seen lower grade books offered for less than the cost of slabbing. After all if you know a $20 book is a 2 then the slab only verifies it is worth $20.
Title: Re: Ebay Finds and Buys -post your pointers here
Post by: cimmerian32 on April 14, 2013, 06:53:28 PM
Speaking as someone who has purchased numerous slabbed books... The slab is just a container like Jim said. I love cracking a slab open and pulling out a book from the 40s with white paper, as the label says, or holding in my hands a book that went from the original owner to the dealer who purchased the collection to CGC. Their grading, while not as consistent as I would like, is within a grade of the actual condition, 99 out of a hundred times. Grading is relative, and subjective, meaning that a defect that I personally can't see in any grade higher than a VG, someone else may consider allowable in Fine, and any grade is an assessment based on other books, and comparable defects, within the graders experience. CGC has screwed the pooch on a fair few books, but they've also graded well over a million of them, and have remained consistent enough to maintain a loyal customer base, and a decent reputation in the high end market.

Boiled down, CGC is good if you are buying a book for investment, or looking for a book of a minimum damage quotient. Also, in the event that they do miss a centerfold being gone, they are the Certified Guarantee Corporation, and they have historically been very good about backing up that guarantee when they have made an egregious mistake.

But, where they really shine, and the reason that the high end market loves them so, is in their restoration detection and disclosure. A PLOD (purple label of death) can and should mean the difference of thousands of dollars, and having a CGC Universal blue label on a high end book makes for extreme liquidity to those who love the books for their market value as much or more than their aesthetic and intrinsic value.

Basically, CGC is necessary in an online market environment, where you can't hold the book in hand and make paper quality and overall grade assessment yourself.

If all you're looking for is a reading copy in passable shape, no, they are probably not essential. But, if you like having nice books, with no hidden issues, and like to know about any restoration upfront, CGC is a fairly reliable barometer of whether or not the book will make you happy.

A bit off topic I'm sure......However....

I've been buying a lot of Italian comics (herafter known as Fumetti/Fummeto(s)) and I had a guy offer me the Ragar series #'s 1 through 53 @ 3.5 eruo and #'s 123 through 140 @ 3.5 eruo and if you check Ebay Italy individual pricing you'll find that to be a fair price. My problem is I've spent myself up to my current paypal limit (which once the bill rolls in my wifw will kill me! :-)) and sadly had to pass. Anone else interested let me know and I will forward the gentlemens email to you.

I'll have to reload my PayPal account if I want to keep getting things off eBay. It was great when the Canadian dollar was going up in value in relation to the American dollar--it seemed like my money was increasing in value. Now that it's going the other way, my dollars are shrinking.

I had enough left in my account to buy a copy of THE FLASH ANNUAL off eBay the other day. I wanted to get Carmine Infantino's instructions on how to draw the Flash--which appeared in that comic. I have other books where this appears and I could always get this image off the internet, but as much as possible I like to have the thing itself. Plus this comic reprints the first appearance of Elongated Man--and I'm close to having every appearance of Ralph Dibny (up to but not including IDENTITY CRISIS), except for his first appearance.

And the seller is in Edmonton, so no worries about exchange rates and international shipping. I also checked out the seller's store and included in my purchase a Jimmy Olsen Giant and an issue of ADVENTURE COMICS featuring a classic LSH story, since the asking price wasn't very much for these.

When I go on eBay looking for classic comics and especially Canadian comics, I often see CDs and DVDs on offer with hundreds of scans of comics. I imagine that many of these are simply being put together using the scans available here or at the Digitial Museum. And when I check the contents they always have what's already on offer here--never anything additional.

I wonder if anyone has ever bought these and found some new scans on them for this site.

These C.D.s turn up regularly at marts here in Scotland.  There is one dealer who always has a pile of them and he says he buys them in from USA.  Selling them at a fiver a time, I'm not sure how he makes anything on them.  although, as I was writing this, it occured to me that he buys one of each and runs off piles of copies.  Still, you have to pay for discs and paper and ink to print the covers. Then there is the time.  The ones I saw most recently, apart from pd stuff from DCM and here, were DC and Marvel files e.g. My Greatest Adventure; Challengers; Action; Adventure; Classics Illustrated; Golden Age Marvel and a lot more that I now forget.  These seem to go hand in hand with the dodgy dvd's that always turn up.  Lots of BBC shows and American network shows.  Some of us were aware, at the last BIG con. that some police and venue officials were walking round the dealers hall, looking at tables and there was not a word said about any of the stuff on sale.

Happens with movies in places like New York City's Chinatown. Lots of boot leg movies but no one really cares. They do not really hurt the sales of the real movies. Those that buy the low quality DVD's for a couple bucks often buy the real thing when it comes out or they never would have bought it. Comics are not viable enough in the USA to make it worth fighting over bootleg CD's. Yes they would object and put up a fight if they had too but it would not be worth the lawyer fees.

I just sent some of the books I bought last weekend as a birthday present to my friend in Austria. The cost to mail them was enormous--and I only paid the basic rate, not the express rate, and no insurance.

Yet when I order books on eBay from sellers in Europe and the U.S., the shipping rates are very reasonable--some sellers even give free shipping.

It occurse to me that one day I might want to sell some of my own books on eBay. Is there some deal on shipping that I don't know about?

It seems to me the rate is set by the originating country. The US has higher rates.

Well, I'm in Canada. I think our rates might be higher than the U.S. Maybe there are different rates for corporations vs. individual citizens.

I'm looking to any source for tips on what shipping method could be cheaper. So today, I was asking my Chinese student what method she uses. She told me that many Chinese people here use a shipping agent to send large packages of milk to their family in China.

But on the question of sending books, she suggested that rather than buying the books in the store, I should just copy the names (the way I've seen some people do with their smart phones) and then go online and order the book from amazon and have them ship the book to my friend.

I tried to explain that this is so missing the point, but I think in my explanation I made myself simply look naive and over sentimental.

The point I tried to make is that you want to go in a bookstore you like and look at their books and give your money to them--not some online service with which you have no personal connection. And you want to browse through the books in the store and find the one that you think is just perfect for someone you know. And you want to buy THAT copy, because it's the copy you expressly picked out.

But I begin to wonder if maybe my day is done and it's time to put me down, because I'm clearly a relic of a bygone age.

Just bought and paid for 43 more Fumetti's from the 1946 1948 period on Ebay Italy with another 6 more waiting for the seller to lift his non US ban so I can purchase them, plus I put a best offer on another one of his books "Razzo". I've asked another chap if he would ship several books I'm interested in (and have convinced my wife to let me buy) if he will ship to the USA. We shall have to wait and see. Ciao guys n gals.....

Great news on those fumetti! Hope they arrive safe and sound.

Let's move that number of Italian comic books (fumetti's) to 63 books now :-0 . the last two awaiting payment instructions (actually just got one and waiting for him to confirm final pricing with shipping before paypal'ing him directly) and the other one is still figuring shipping to the USA since he normally does not ship to the USA. Once those transactions are complete then we are done for the forseeable future for buying anymore "international" books until I go back to work. One seller informed me today that his books are on their way :-) with RA tracking # and such. Would you all want a rundown on what is coming? Let me know. Ciao

I don't think there is anyone else here who might be fighting for the same international books as you. Thanks for supplying these. Hope you enjoyed Sally. Surprising what is in it pretty cool.

I did enjoy Sally.... I don't think anyone would go for what I pay for these..... lol.....no what I was asking if anyone wanted to see what was up and coming their way for the future...... Here is a simple Run-down.
they are....
Tanks
Ragar
Mistero
Mirko
are the 4 main characters I concentrated on.
Fulmine Macherato only 4 issues.
Machera Bianca 1 issue and MAYBE 1 issue of Razzo - we're dickering over shipping.

They are all appreciated Richard. I got your point but in the ebay find it would be to keep others from a bidding war.

This ad on EBAY U.K. is interesting.  Scroll to the bottom of the listing. He also has a listing for Magnet.  Just adds to what I mentioned to Richard recently re. attributions on uploads. I like the cut of this bloke's jib:-

Look like buy it now but nothing PD except some war that look like Harvey war books. The Starman look good in their own right though. To bad Naked City was renewed or the photo novel would be PD

I don't believe those are photos of actual printed shirts. For 1 thing the shadows & wrinkles on the shirts are the same, secondly the lining up the printing on the interior of the shirt would be hell to line up so well. They probably mashed up the comic cover image with a generic t-shirt image.

Is anyone able to determine who the artist is that signed an item I recently picked up.  It is a drawing that is signed with a Star Wars Bounty Hunter header.

It would have been helpful had you scanned the whole drawing, some of us can identify an artist by his style.
It's dated '21, so likely a contempory artist,  not a goldern age or even a late 20th century one.
