Ditko renders the Gorgo cover much better here . At first glance you would swear that you are looking at a DC comic book. The highlighting of Gorgo by the mad doctors' electrical prod reminds me of DCs " House of Mystery " & " House of Secrets " cover art. Very DC-ish !
The story is very reminiscent of Atlas "the Tales to Astonish" and "Tales Of Suspense" "Giant monsters" pre hero books.
This issue was a particular childhood favorite of mine because it seemed to bring all those elements together very well.
A dictator of a small island named Mandel Astro, gets one of his scientists to capture Gorgo. The scientist tortures Gorgo with an electric prod in order to make him obedient and controllable. Astro then gets his scientist to send Gorgo after his enemies. Soon the scientist uses Gorgo to overthrow Astro, and decides to use the monster to allow him to conquer neighboring nations. Eventually Gorgo rebels against the abuse and turns on his master.
For a school assignment, a young girl plants a special seed in her front lawn she obtains from an eccentric old man. Overnight the seed grows into a tree that reaches six miles in height and produces giant apples.
