After reading the Dan Hastings story, I can state the following:
The text of the story is complete from beginning to end. The title page is the only page that appears to be missing. The title of the Dan Hastings story is "50 Men Outside". This is determined from an examination of the titles listed on the contents page, and a process of elimination of the other known features. Although the name Dan Hastings doesn't appear on the contents page, on page 36 of the story appears the line "At this very minute there are fifty men outside the building." The likely author is Ken Fitch, since his name appears on the credits of all prior Dan Hastings text features. This is a very odd sort of Dan Hastings story. Although the story takes place on the planet Mercury, it is essentially a criminal investigation story is which Hastings busts up a hotel gambling ring operation. The only real science-fiction angle of the story is when the crooks threaten to eliminate Dan by tossing him in the lava river which flows just outside the hotel. |

|
Comic Story | Colt Canyon (2 pages) |
Content | Genre: Western-frontier |
Notes | This story may or may not be located at this point- the pages here are missing from the available scan. The page count would fit given the expected page counts of the features to either side (the page count is from Keltner's index, although as with most of the issue, it is incorrectly listed under #8- however, it appears on this issue's title page which otherwise exactly matches the interior contents).
Alternately, the story listed as "50 Men Outside" may actually be "Colt Canyon" (with a 1-page filler occupying the extra space), and "50 Men Outside" may be a 2-page story here. |
|
Featuring | Dan Hastings |
Credits | Script: Ken Fitch? (see note) | Pencils: Fred Guardineer (signed) | Inks: Fred Guardineer | Letters: typeset |
Content | Genre: Science Fiction |
Notes | The available scan is missing the first page of this story, but Ken Fitch was credited on earlier splash illustrations. This story is at least 7 pages, and 8 pages is likely as that is the length of the installment in issue #7 (the text story for #8 has not been indexed at this time). |

Comic Story | 50 Men Outside (3 pages) |
Content | Genre: Western-frontier |
Notes | It's not entirely clear if this is "50 Men Outside" or not, as only the final page is present in the available copy. It may be "Colt Canyon", which is the other story on the table of contents that is not accounted for. The story is not mentioned in Keltner's guide, so there's no telling whether it's a 2 or 3 page story (it's possible that there was a 1-page filler that is also part of the 2 pages that are missing between this feature and the previous one. |
